It took a few weeks, but here it is. My tribute to the late Akira Toriyama features Jade from Dragon Quest XI. A longer description of the piece and my struggles in making it will be after the break. As always, constructive feedback is appreciated.

I do want to take a moment or two to explain the idea behind this effort for those who haven't played DQXI (you should DEFINITELY play the game, btw). Without spoiling much of the story, it references a point in the game where the character Rab reveals his connection to the Luminary, the game's main character, and invites him to partake in a ceremony to honor the departed. It's an incredibly moving scene, and it's also part of a sequence of events where Jade plays a very significant role herself.

I realized as I was working on this piece that Toriyama-san's passing wouldn't technically be remembered in this manner if I was staying completely true to the plot, but the emotional weight of the moment itself definitely aligns with that which has been felt to many of Toriyama-san's colleagues and fans. I wanted to create a moment of own that honors the man in a graceful and melancholy light; I hope I at least succeeded at this to some degree.

This was another roller coaster of emotion to finish. I had started working on the sketch to this piece just hours before reading the news of Toriyama-san's passing. I had been watching someone's old playthrough of DQXI S and wanted to do a quick cool-looking take on Jade. Once I found out the unfortunate news, I knew I wanted to take this idea in a different direction almost immediately. This meant trying some things I didn't have a ton of experience doing (like nighttime scenes and somber expressions), but as usual with my efforts, it's all part of the fun.

And yet, I spent a lot of time spinning my wheels on this piece because I found myself agonizing over several stages. To start, getting past the sketch stage itself took days because I never couldn't feel content with it progress. It was only after watching another artist proceed with one of her sketches during a stream where I started to loosen up a bit. She also deserves some credit for giving me an idea of how to proceed with the lineart in this piece, which allowed me to take on a looser style than the typical pens. I may have allowed too much of the pencil-like texture to remain in some parts, but I ultimately like this change and hope to improve it in future works.

The rendering process was also a challenge. The blending was initially off, and I had to resort to multiple approaches to get it to my liking this time. Most notably, I REALLY struggled with the hair and skirt folds and trying to establish a reasonably polished look. Thankfully, with the help of some custom brushes, I managed to work out something I liked. It's not exactly how I want those areas to look, but it's fine for now given my current skill level.

Despite the hurdles, this was fun to do, and I'm pleased I'm finally able to present my tribute to Toriyama-san and his incredible legacy to the world (or at least the Tumble community).
