As a wheelchair user I'm trying to reframe my language for "being in the way."
"I'm in the way," "I can't fit," and "I can't go there," is becoming "there's not enough space," "the walkway is too narrow," and "that place isn't accessible."
It's a small change, but to me it feels as if I'm redirecting blame from myself to the people that made these places inaccessible in the first place. I don't want people to just think that they're helping me, I want them to think that they're making up for someone else's wrongdoing. I want them to remember every time I've needed help as something someone else caused.

I missed 2 shifts due to my health
I'm still working on recovering
But bills don't wait

People think being self aware cancels out mental illness. That when you realise your thoughts or behaviours are irrational you just stop having/doing them
Instead what happens if you're extremely self aware and mentally ill is that you just think in a resigned kind of way "I'm being really fucking crazy right now" while being very loudly mentally ill
Sometimes you are able to tell the people around you "oh, you can ignore me rn. I'm just being extremely mentally ill rn. It will eventually pass" and then continue your erratic behaviour. But mostly it's just privately thinking: "well this is embarrassing but I can't turn it off so just gotta deal with it I guess."
It's infuriating honestly

i was talkin with some europeans about their healthcare and i realized like, even if i had the means to immigrate, i most likely would not be allowed to in most countries as a single person because I am disabled. This is another major aspect of ableism I don't see talked about often, the way immigration systems across the globe are designed to keep disabled people (who would be 'burdens' on the welfare system) out.

You've already come so far. If nobody has said it yet, I'm proud of you. I want you to be proud of yourself too

No matter what you've done in your life or what you think of yourself, you did not deserve your trauma. The universe is not punishing you. Bad things happen to people regardless of their morality. And you are no exception. You do not deserve to hurt

You don't have to scold yourself for being upset. Being upset is a normal and natural thing. Allow yourself to accept these feelings, and learn to cope with them instead of suppressing them. You deserve to be heard and understood

If you have speech issues due to brain fog or psychosis or schizophrenia spectrum or intellectual disability or aphasia or whatever reason love you forever. We are not stupid, we are not freaks, we are disabled (if you identify that way) and deserve to be normalized. Speak "strange" forever

My name is Margaux and I am also known as Retrophiliac. I am self employed and an activist and advocate based out of western Canada. One of my pins is even in the Museum of Vancouver's openMOV! My main focus with my advocacy work is to push for greater resources and funding for disabled small business owners, as I firmly believe it is the most accommodating employment for those who want it. I am a board member of BC PEOPLE FIRST and we do really important work.
I design pins, patches, stickers, keychains, magnets and so much more. (What you see here is just a small sampling!)
The items have a disability, neurodiversity, autistic focus.
I am on Etsy and I also have my own shop Shop best for USA & Canada.
Etsy will handle VAT, VOSS and IOSS for international orders.
I also post frequently on instagram, facebook and tiktok.
P.S:
I run a few awesome facebook groups:
Made by Autistics Marketplace and Community
Made by Neurodivergents Marketplace and Community
Autistic inclusive dating and friends
Neurodivergent Skills Connect
Disabled Entrepreneurs/Self Employed in British Columbia
I have been receiving some less than stellar comments on some of my content, so sharing this post with your supportive network would be something I would be grateful for. I want to reach the people who will benefit from the work I do, to hopefully create better and more understanding experiences.
The entire goal I have is to help people.
Thank you so much!

Raise your hand if your trauma still fucks you up on the daily and you have to hide it because everyone in your life has no patience for it and thinks you should be over it.
