On Tuesday, the Senate passed a massive foreign aid package that included an ultimatum for TikTok: Divest or be banned from operating within the US. The package was approved by the House of Representatives on Saturday, and President Joe Biden said that he intends to sign the bill on Wednesday.
“Even as our social media platforms have fumbled in their response to foreign influence operations, there was never any concern that these platforms are operating at the direction of foreign adversaries,” Mark Warner, chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said ahead of the vote on Tuesday. “I cannot say the same for TikTok.”
For more than four years, Congress has threatened to ban TikTok, citing potential risks to national security. Last month, the House approved a separate divestiture bill, but the measure stalled out in the Senate after lawmakers like Senator Maria Cantwell argued that giving TikTok six months to find a new owner was too little time. The new bill extends the deadline for up to an additional six months, giving TikTok a year to sell.
“It is unfortunate that the House of Representatives is using the cover of important foreign aid and humanitarian assistance to once again jam through a ban bill that would trample the free speech rights of 170 million Americans,” TikTok said in a statement shortly after Saturday’s vote. The company did not immediately respond to the Senate’s vote on Tuesday.
The effort to ban TikTok has become politically fraught, especially as more politicians join the platform to campaign in the 2024 election. For years, the Biden administration and campaign avoided creating their own accounts on the app, opting to build out a network of influencers to fill the void. But in February, Biden’s reelection campaign joined TikTok. In March, Biden told reporters that he would sign the bill.
Responding to this revived divestment effort, former president Donald Trump blamed Biden for attacks against the app. “Just so everyone knows, especially the young people, Crooked Joe Biden is responsible for banning TikTok,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Monday. “He is the one pushing it to close, and doing it to help his friends over at Facebook become richer and more dominant, and able to continue to fight, perhaps illegally, the Republican Party.”
The Trump administration was the first to go after TikTok. In 2020, Trump signed a series of executive orders banning apps like TikTok, Alipay, and WeChat. Court challenges prevented these orders from going into place. Last year, Montana lawmakers voted to ban the app, but a federal judge blocked the law from taking effect, saying that it “likely violates the First Amendment.” After the bill passed the House on Saturday, the company’s head of public policy, Michael Beckerman, told staff in an email that if the bill were signed into law, “we will move to the courts for a legal challenge.”
Many lawmakers have cited national security and data privacy concerns as their primary motivation for supporting the bill.
"Congress is not acting to punish ByteDance, TikTok or any other individual company,” Democratic senator Maria Cantwell, said in a floor speech on Tuesday. “Congress is acting to prevent foreign adversaries from conducting espionage, surveillance, maligned operations, harming vulnerable Americans, our servicemen and women, and our U.S. government personnel.”
Critics of a ban have long argued that passing a sweeping data privacy bill could satisfy most of the complaints lawmakers have over TikTok’s security, as well as those posed by US-based companies.
“Congress could pass comprehensive consumer privacy legislation, which would, I think, take more meaningful steps toward addressing a lot of the data privacy concerns that have been raised about TikTok,” says Kate Ruane, director of the Center for Democracy and Technology's Free Expression Project. “And I do not think that there is public evidence that is currently available to demonstrate that extreme, serious, immediate harm exists.”

If Tommy hadn't kissed Buck in 7x04 I don't think Buck would have realized he was attracted to him. Oliver has said that Buck has felt this way before and Buck has always been bisexual, he just didn't realize it and it was the kiss that prompted that realization, not just Buck's crush on Tommy. If it was just the crush on Tommy Buck would have realized he was bisexual way earlier.
Just today Oliver said that Buck was probably attracted to Eddie when he first met him and he didn't know what those feelings were or how to process them, so he acted out.
The difference between Buck meeting Eddie and Buck meeting Tommy is that Tommy is queer and knows it and can see the signs and signals that Buck didn't even realize he was putting out there so he kissed Buck. That was the moment Buck realized he wasn't straight.
And throughout the episode Buck is shown to be jealous of not just Tommy, but also of Eddie. There are so many moments in that episode that make you wonder who he's jealous of and why.
Is he jealous of Eddie for spending time with Tommy, this cool new person they met? Yeah. Is he jealous of Tommy for spending time that he views as his with Eddie? Yep. Is he concerned that Tommy might be taking his place in not just Eddie's life, but in Christoper's? Yes. Is he just general confused because he's feeling some type of way that he really doesn't understand? For sure.
It isn't as cut and dry as "Tommy was Buck's bisexual awakening" full stop, because we've heard Oliver say that Buck has always been bi he just understands it now. We've heard him say that Buck was attracted to Eddie when he first met him but didn't understand it. We heard Buck tell Maddie he checks out hot guys asses.
I fully believe that if Tommy hadn't kissed Buck in the loft that night that Buck would have written his weird feelings off as just new friend stuff like he probably felt for Eddie and has felt for other men but didn't understand and eventually he would have gotten over it.
Tommy's kiss was the catalyst for Buck realizing he isn't straight, but it wasn't just Tommy that made that realization possible - it was Buck's entire life that did. It was him talking to his sister and her affirming him and helping him understand that checking out a hot guys ass isn't abnormal, but it isn't straight. It was Buck looking back at his past feelings for men and realizing that they're similar to the crush he has on Tommy.
And this isn't me devaluing Tommy in Buck's coming out arc, because without that kiss Buck likely wouldn't be here yet. But I think saying it was all about Tommy and Buck's jealousy in 7x04 was only about Tommy is doing a disservice to the nuance of the episode and Buck's sexuality in general.

Q: When you first met that character, and you seemed a little standoffish and maybe threatened, and not a big fan. Do you think it's because deep down you had these... something there brewing, but you didn't know what it was?

so i finally realized why i think buddie is going to happen moreso now then ever before and it has to do with the PR from this season which has been overwhelming in regards to Buddie to say the least. Also the fact that we now know Buddie was going to be in the works by the end of S4 and Buck Bi was brought to the table in S4, which means the shooting was going to be the start of Buddie. To me why on Earth would you bring this to the light for everyone to see in interviews if you're planning on moving in a different direction, that would be unnecessarily cruel to the fans to be like yeah Buddie was in the plans and it was going to happen but then FOX said no and so we couldn't do it. Now that we're on a different network we've decided we're doing something else. Like to me if that was the case why even bring all this information to light, you know what I mean? Like just keep all this stuff in the dark if Buddie is not the plan. I think the only reason you're bringing all this information some of which we know but we got confirmation to me is an indication that Buddie is very much the plan and now they can tell the story they've wanted to tell for years on end. There's a reason Tim is back and I think it's to tell the story he could not tell at FOX which is Buck and Eddie's love story.
This of course doesn't take into account the very clear signs the show has given us about Buddie in episodes 4 and 5, but yeah just from a PR standpoint it's so clear Buddie is the plan and that's why everything is coming to light now.
Hell you have even Oliver coming out as Team Buddie and Ryan and Tim and Lou being loud as hell in interviews about Buddie. It's just wild to me.
Anon, I did read this and I do agree but my brain is literally on fire with how much has happened during this "hiatus" that I'm just sitting here like

Since we’re on the subject, I think the time between Buck and/or Eddie realizing or voicing out their feelings for each other and them actually getting together will be so delicious. Full of angst and sexual tension and not without grief, but delicious nonetheless. Give me Eddie watching Buck hang out with Christopher like we’ve seen a million times before, but it’s agonizing now because you know he’s thinking about missed opportunities to make this permanent, to not have to watch Buck leave at the end of the night. Give me Buck noticing the bullet wound scar on Eddie’s chest and he has to leave the building to calm down and cry because he nearly lost Eddie and he still doesn’t get to have him. Give me Eddie wanting to touch and soothe a cut on Buck’s cheek but holding back because it’s not his place to touch. Better yet, give me Eddie unable to resist and touching Buck’s cheek so tenderly that time freezes for a second before they remember all the reasons they shouldn’t. Give me eyes filled with longing locked over a kitchen counter, over a dinner table, over a totaled car at the scene of an accident. Give me Buck unable to stop looking at how beautiful Eddie is as he dances in the arms of someone else. Give me everything while we’re on the road to sunset.
