bro the fact that this beautiful show gifts us an autistic girl from the 1500s and in doing so, saying that autistic people have always existed and we’re not going anywhere & also giving us a character that is complex and interesting and saves her sister… you can just tell this story was written by one of us. I love this show and I love Elinor

Some explanations about integration and the language around it! All definitions taken (but paraphrased) from the ISSTD Journal of Trauma and Dissociation (2011).
And just a footnote: There is no “one size fits all” goal. The needs and desires of each system are between the parts and their therapist (if they have one.) Whether a system wants to pursue final fusion or come to a resolution between parts is totally up to them. Both are valid and respected options.

This book is so brilliant! It's amazing to read about a character that's so similar to yourself 💚 I feel so seen and understood

I hope people start giffing the other characters in A Kind of Spark besides the witch hunter dude, I’d love to reblog some edits of the autistic characters and autism dialogue/discussion

Thinking about episode 9 of A Kind of Spark.
-
I love how Keedie reengages with an old interest to help herself recover. That is a real thing that autistics do a lot to help themselves feel better. Whether it's an object that we love, or a topic that we used to learn everything about, going back to those old interests can make us feel safe and whole again.
I love that the show had that. I'm so used to stories about autistics that use the same five tropes over and over again (which isn't bad...but it starts to feel impersonal). You don't really see autistic characters do things like get burnt out and then recover with a special interest. I'm so happy about that being portrayed.

I feel like I never actually realized how much I needed actually good autistic rep made by autistic people until now
I mean I saw these autistic characters made by neurotypical people and played by neurotypical actors (when actors are needed). And I was like "sure, these are mediocre reps and I despise them, and I wish there was actual good rep out there, but whatever, not gonna happen ig so this is all I got". Then I saw some shows by autistic people and with autistic actors coming out and I thought "oh, cool, I'm gonna watch them when I get the motivation" but then never actually watched them, you know ? I knew I wanted that, but it wasn't like... a priority.
But then I got some free time, "hey, what was the name of this show again ?" and. I ended up watching "A Kind Of Spark" and "Everything's Gonna Be Okay" in like two days. And the whole time I was on the verge of tears. When I tell you I even literally cried at some point in the second season of Everything's Gonna Be Okay.
Because I suddendly realized HOW MUCH I NEEDED these kinds of shows, and how STRAIGHT UP OFFENSIVE all – ALL – of the reps made by neurotypicals are. I never understood how important this was. Representation that is just SO REAL. That isn't the neurotypical interpretation of autism, but really what autism actually is. The difference is just SO MUCH MORE obvious now. All these details overlooked by neurotypicals, all their fantasies about autism. Now I'll never be able to even glance at their shows about autism. I already hated them but now I just think they shouldn't even be allowed to make them
I knew this was bad rep. But I never truly understood HOW BADLY it affected me to see these terrible reps everywhere, and HOW MUCH I craved for actual good rep, until I started crying like a baby the second I saw what good rep actually looked like and felt like to me.
It's so weird because I remember I felt the exact same way when I saw an actually good ace rep for the first time, but idk, I just didn't think I would feel the same with autistic rep for some reason ? Because we have autistic rep way more than ace rep... But it's bad rep so at the end of the day it just feels the same as no rep at all, or maybe it's even worse. The realization hit me like a truck and I am in tears lol

Honestly who gave Wicked the RIGHT to express what's expressed in For Good.
You've changed me and I've changed you. Permanently and inescapably and completely and nearly beyond recognition, certainly beyond being able to undo it or even knowing where to start, where to begin to untangle the twisted threads of our intertwined lives.
Was the change for the better? I'm not sure. The change has been too deep and too complete; i don't know who i am without you.
But i think it was for the better. In any case it was for good.

thinking about this a lot right now as I read about child development and how important play is for helping kids learn to follow developmentally-appropriate rules (like waiting) and generalize emotions (they don't just feel something, but other people have feelings too)—
and kids who don't feel safe will of course play less. and i'm just sitting here realizing how many parts of development the loss or limitations of play will affect.
and very much wanting to run a group on the importance of play in my internship because i feel like we all deserve a chance to play, even if we had ample opportunities as a child.
psychology fact 9
🌼 when you explore or play, your body is inherently feeling at least a little safe. 🌼
when you're in danger, there's no need for your body to explore out of curiosity, or try new things just because—instead, your body is just focusing on survival. so when you explore in this way, your body is telling you that, at the very least, you feel 😌 slightly safe. 😌
❤️ you can also choose to notice little things and explore in this manner when your body is telling you that you aren't safe but you know you are. ❤️ It'll help to remind your body that, actually, you're 🌱 safe enough 🌱 to think about some other things.
