Why do the British say the opposite of what they mean and call it being polite?
A conversation between two people has a shared meaning that you construct together, right? Like if we have a conversation, we have to come to some agreement about what the takeaway from it was. "We passed the time," "We discussed politics," "We flirted," or whatever.
The British conversational idiom isn't about saying the opposite of what you mean per se, it's about giving your conversational partner enough interpretive room that, if they want to, they can retroactively change the shared meaning of the conversation without explicitly acknowledging that that's what they've done, and so save them from embarrassment. An example would be two people having a conversation that could be interpreted as flirting, or as innocuous. By being indirect, they give each other room to either advance by becoming more direct (making the takeaway "We flirted") or back out at any point (making the takeaway "We chatted about how fond we both are of our platonic friendship") without having to make themselves emotionally vulnerable by actually saying what they want. Which is why some British people find it rude when you back them into a conversational corner and the only way out is to actually say what they want explicitly: it's considered rude to force other people to be emotionally open. The whole point is that you're supposed to play the game together in such a way that you don't have to do that: to fail shows either a lack of conversational skill or a lack of care for your conversation partner's feelings.
None of this is ever made explicit, of course: that would be rude.
That's why many Americans are rubbish at verbal flirting, but they make excellent long-term relationship partners.

what a mother does for you out of obligation vs what a mother does for you because she wants to. the taste of a cup of coffee made from obligation vs. the taste of a cup of coffee made. did you raise me because you wanted to or did you raise me because you had to, because i was in your home and you thought, i have to put food in every mouth under this roof. did you look at me with love or did you look at me. did you ever look at me? did you ever see me? did you want to? do you want to still? if i asked you to love me would you laugh? would you ask me why? would you tell me to not ask such stupid questions? would you go to bed and wonder to yourself, why does she think i don't love her? i've done everything for her i've bathed her i've clothed her i've fed her i kept a roof over her head. isn't that love? do you even know? do you know what love looks like? did your mother love you? did she make you coffee? can you tell me what it tasted like?

if ppl theorize smash bros is going to be canon to kh thats fine, but there are already people so confident that its 100000% going to happen and like. ppl get this mindset where its impossible for them to acknowledge that what they want may not happen.
it happened with the sleeping realm theory, its currently happening with neo twewy. When you block out fans and JUST look at KH, it’s NOT this ultra-meta, fourth wall shattering game everyone thinks it is. The story’s pretty contained within its own universe.
If you want to theorize ultra out-there things that’s fine, but damn I’m exhausted of the cycle of fans acting like things are practically confirmed when the material has barely even hinted at it— or contradicts it completely!!!!!!!!

I'm attracted to fat men and hairy men because I have good taste and they're gorgeous. No ulterior motives. Stop being weird about it.

What’s so awful and hope-eroding about the pandemic at this point is how consistently the value of life is cheapened before our eyes. The number of deaths go up. We are appalled and scared. The number of deaths go down, we talk about the economy. Hospital wards are full to bursting. The number of deaths go up. That number isn’t as scary as it was. We can get through that. The number goes down. It’s not zero. It’s hundreds and thousands, but it’s less than before and there are profits to be made. The number goes up. We’ve seen worse. The numbers go by. We don’t blink an eye anymore. They’re just numbers. The profits go up and the deaths go up and it’s business as usual. People are dying. People are always dying. It doesn’t make your stomach drop anymore. The number goes down. The economy goes down. Add another covid booster shot, make the numbers go the right way. My neighbor gets evicted because he can’t work anymore due to Covid side effects. Make him a number. People live out of their cars. But they didn’t die, don’t count them. Restaurants are open. Shops are open. People are dying. It’s not scary anymore. 526 Covid deaths yesterday. That’s not so bad. This is normal. It’s all numbers. 4.5 million dead around the world. How many is that? Is that a lot? I don’t know anymore. I feel sick.
