YouTube as a Platform
YouTube is beginning to dominate the sharing world. Over the last 5 years (10 all together) the video sharing website has had many rising stars. With it’s continuing development with a select few of a “YouTube Digerati”, as Ben Cook (Ninebrassmonkeys) puts it, shining through. Based off of that I give you a ten step list to get comfortable with your YouTube self and not be upset with possible failure.
1. Don’t expect YouTube fame. Too many people see the current famous YouTubers and see how easy their life is and think “Well I could do that” or “I want a piece of that” when in reality it is through their success that their life is now easier. They started off in exactly the same position most people start YouTube in: A teenager, bored and discovering a new platform to share their ideas or creative flare.
2. Make videos that you enjoy to make. There is no point sharing and creating media, opinions, films, music etc... unless you enjoy making it in the first place. If you look at the bigger YouTubers now they can make silly challenge videos with their friends and their “favourites” because they have a dedicated fan base that wants to see ‘THEIR’ thing. They enjoy to create videos and be topical. Some like to game and consistently put out two videos a day of good quality.
3. YOU DON’T NEED HIGH TECH EQUIPMENT. The YouTubers you see, currently filling the “Popular” section on the front of YouTube, all use high tech and expensive equipment. To give and share certain information you enjoy you don’t need good equipment. Many of them started using a webcam camera and microphone, some even without a microphone and just text. It is the audiences enjoyment of you and if you get the money to buy better equipment you simply do it for yourself so you can sound better to your audience or be more visible. You don’t buy it to BE ‘FAMOUS.
4. A dislike doesn’t ALWAYS means your video is bad. I’ve been there. You post a video and get a dislike and you hate every part of what you’ve created and wish your channel had never been made and as you throw something across the room you click delete video. Your creativity is only judged by your ability to create. For example: Your first film you make ever in your life with no experience isn’t, probably, going to be as good as the one you make in 7 years time after practice, learning and testing. It’s like YouTube. A dislike can come from either a troll or somebody not thinking that your content is good enough YET. Very often people aren’t incredibly constructive with comments, so you have to take it with a pinch of salt and realise your video might appeal to some audience. Don’t be disheartened and persevere.
5. I am a huge believer of never delete a video. Unless you are a disgusting asshole like Sam Pepper, Alex Day or Jason Sampson (VeeOneEye) and your videos are disgusting, then I think your videos are a great testament to the amount you have grown since that first initial upload. I, personally, upload singing videos to YouTube and to see my journey from 4 years ago to now I see how my setup has changed, my voice has changed and overall how my reception of videos is viewed by my audience. It helps you see how to keep a channel going and growing, no matter how small the following. (169 subscribers strong! ;))
6. Don’t be scared to do it. If you perceive yourself to be ugly or unapproachable or whatever lies you tell yourself. Anyone can create and produce something for YouTube. I remember a statistic from 2014 that stated ‘300 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute”. That means in an hour, 750 days worth of videos are uploaded every hour (18,000 hours). To get noticed you have to consistently make and produce.
7. Subscriber figures doesn’t mean view figures. Just because somebody subscribes to your channel doesn’t mean that they are going to watch your videos and you shouldn’t rely on that number to tell you how many people will be watching. It’s nice to see however that somebody thought that dipping in from time to time would be worth their while due to your content. What is truly useful to a YouTuber is the like counter. So if you’ve worked hard on something and you feel proud to get a like and it gets 20 likes then your video is more likely to be found when searched for similar categories in YouTube, helping more people to see your creative design.
8. Don’t steal other people’s ideas or plans. Recently a ‘famous’ YouTuber I watch accidentally came up with an idea for a video on camera and many people copied his idea to try and claim it was there idea. That isn’t cool. The true test of YouTube is to try and make something others haven’t seen or with a new twist on it because in reality you’re never going to be truly creative or unique with ideas in our world. At some point in our vast history someone will have had an idea the same as yours, but your delivery and production may be better. Don’t be scared to be different with ideas, it helps adapt and develop your own style.
9. FIND YOUR STYLE. Find what makes you “YOU” and stay with that. Many YouTube ‘celebrities’ now put on a fake persona to the camera to always be happy and always adore their audience for being amazing and act like their life is perfect. THEN they post a video with them being sad and it shocks people because they think this person has it perfect. If you’re having an off day then either don’t make a video or explain, in a lesser way, that you’re down.
10. This is just a note to anyone who does become YouTube ‘famous’. Don’t change. Yes, you can buy in to all that book deal or make-up deal or comic book deal etc... crap. It’s a pain in the ass for the audience, mainly because of jealousy or the bigger reason of true literary geniuses slaving over books and not being published whilst those who are famous get something that isn’t amazing published. However the Youtuber has money, fans and can support a life for a future family. Anyone wants that. Just don’t, in your videos, become somebody you’re not and butter us up with compliments you don’t know or mean and anything else. Our views and subscriptions are what got you where you are, don’t ever take that for granted.

Alfie’s Office Space
Alfie Deyes, Pointlessblog on YouTube, has just announced that he is renting an office space to be more “serious” about his uploading of videos. I hate this and it has pushed me over the edge. (IN THIS LIST I WILL RESORT TO HIM AS NOT A NORMAL PERSON FOR COMPARISON AND MONETARY SAKE ONLY, HE IS NORMAL). Here are ten reasons why Alfie has bothered me in the last few months:
1. You've rented an office that is designated for around thirty people JUST for yourself. How pretentious can you be to buy 30x more space than you actually need to film an 8-12 minute video every week?
2. You've rented it so you don't procrastinate but have bought more distractions in the process i.e. “So I just bought a Table Tennis Table guys”. Linked to point 7, that tables average cost on the internet is £220.
3. You're going to be away from Zoe a lot to "film" videos. Now I’m aware that many relationships in a normal working environment are divided through the day by office hours but your ability to create and edit from home allows you to spend time with her. But you’ve bought, pretty much, a second home (without the bedroom) where you will be away from her.
4. You don't need a MASSIVE office to film YouTube videos that are 8-10 minutes long. You have already built your fan base up with young girls who would happily comment their “love” for a video of you eating cereal or even state that it’s “goals”. You don’t need a huge awesome “playground” of office space and tools.
5. You've rented an office so you can also have meetings in this room. "Meetings" referring to Maddie, an employee of gleam, coming over to tell you when book signings are and your book guy trying to organise how to make more money from another rip-off of "Wreck This Book"?
6. Many YouTubers - Rhett and Link for GMM and Casey Neistat spring to mind - have office spaces for filming pieces or photography. They have set up a show around this office space - The GMM set and a need to purchase and make - however, Alfie, you are one YouTuber who lives in a £1,000,000 house with an “office” in it that you refuse to clean.
7. On top of this office, something else that bothers me is your continuous buying of items and “tools” that you never use. Now I looked up the prices of certain items, a huge camera lense and a 360 degree camera, and for a normal working person the prices are extortionate. Yet you buy it and then “forget” to use it and that lack of care with money really bothers me.
8. Everything you do now is for money. You have three channels which are: “Gaming”, “Main” and “Vlogging”. To paraphrase a gaming YouTuber Jacksepticeye: “If a YouTuber has more than one channel then i’m sorry but it’s just all about the money”. And your sudden ‘care’ to put in effort with your videos will be short lived.
9. This is the one that annoyed me the most. You received A LOT of presents in your America book signings. A LOT. These presents were apparently too much for you and you ‘couldn’t’ send them to your house in England, which cost £1,000,000 might I reiterate, so you had a few of the sweets and then, to paraphrase Alfie himself, “I gave it to the hotel staff”. Now that really bothers me. People have spent their money for a ticket to see you, on your stupid book (or whatever you named it) and then because they like your videos have got a present for you and you have the audacity to give those away as if they mean nothing. Many other YouTubers I know of, no matter HOW big or small the amount of presents, always send their presents home.
10. This list could go on but this is my last one. Inconsistency. I understand that Daily Vlogging isn’t for everyone because you need a life that people can either connect with or be voyeuristic with, such as FunForLouis’ channel, however I don’t think posting a video where you wake up and tell us what is going to happen in the day whilst lying in bed. You making breakfast. You then get up and go to the gym with the personal trainer that you don’t shut up about having. You having lunch. You making dinner. You’re gonna watch a film now. “Gooooooodddnight.” The video is 7 minutes long and it’s shown what anyone else does in a day. The voyeurism of YouTube has been wasted on many vloggers to truly show what people could be doing or something interesting that you have been doing. Vlogging used to be very niche with people doing it when they were on trips in foreign (to them) lands. Now it’s the equivalent of eating cereal and talking about “secrets” that has really ruined the possible creative videos.
At the end of the day nothing will change. He’ll make money for being clumsy and relatively attractive but by making videos as thought-provoking as “FAMILY BEACH WALK” and some sort of “CHALLENGE” video. You’re a rich asshole who claims to love his audience but who doesn’t have the decency to show it through any real emotion. “I love you guys” at the end of a video said in the same way EVERYDAY does not count.
