hello!! as an online college student, i’ve been lucky enough to already have some experience with online schooling, so i’m here to offer all my advice for the students of quarantined schools! due to the covid-19 outbreak, it’s been very difficult for many who’ve had to switch to online school. however, there are many way to make it simpler and faster, and i’m here to give my best tips!!
firstly, make a list. whether you’re more comfortable with a physical to-do list or a virtual calendar to schedule things out (i’ve used google calendar almost my whole life but i just got the app elisi and it’s beautiful, minimalist, and easy to use! available on pretty much every device). planning out your work is the most efficient way to get it done.
don’t try to do everything at once. while it’s best to get things done soon, space out your work efficiently so you don’t feel overwhelmed!
create a simple, comfortable study space. it doesn’t have to be a perfectly organized desk or gorgeous setup at the kitchen table; i do all of my college work from my bed with a comfy throw blanket and fairy lights up. the most important thing is that you are in the right position to do work, you are comfortable, and that you are able to keep everything you need close to you.
work in chunks. to best knock out your work, take it an hour at a time with 10 to 15 minute breaks in between. make some tea, get a snack, stay energized.
drink lots of water. you are not immune to the coronavirus. it’s also easier to stay energized and focused when you’re hydrated.
MOST IMPORTANTLY: COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR INSTRUCTORS. at first i was very timid to communicate back and forth with my professors when something was wrong but i have learned that it is the most important thing to have good communication. if you don’t understand a concept, have trouble with the online system, or just need general help in your academics, sending them an email is the best way to solve the problem.
reward yourself!! once you’ve finished an assignment, give yourself a little treat (maybe a half hour of minecraft or your favorite snack to munch on!!)–it’s the best way to encourage your mind to work harder.
don’t work too late. you’re off from school. unless it’s the night of the due date, don’t push yourself until it’s done. the morning is just a sleep away.
these are some good playlists for background music.
another important tip! communicate with your classmates in case you don’t understand something. everybody learns differently and some pick up info different than others.
make fancy notes!! get fancy with your stationery!! you have plenty of time now and can go bonkers with your beautiful notes.
continue to check your temperature and monitor symptoms. your school has closed for a reason. your safety and health are important.
retain a relatively normal sleep schedule, similar to the one you have when you normally go to school. slipping out of your regular sleep cycle can and will kick your ass when it’s time to go back.
lastly, eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. take a nap when you’re tired. remember to go to the bathroom and keep your water filled. take care of yourself.
if i think of anything else to add, i will!! just wanted to bring forth my advice in hopes that it benefits anybody who is at home b/c of quarantine or school cancellation :)

my quick tips for working / studying from home
- get dressed and style your hair as if you’re going to school/work - even use the same perfume/ cologne as you normally do  (trick your mind into being motivated)
- plan things out - everything (plan out your week, day, meal, etc. you can make these as specific as you’d like. this will help you stay on top of your work as well as stay healthy, especially if you live alone.)
- make studying/ working the first thing you do each day - best if you can start in the morning (minimize the tendency to procrastinate)
- just start - don’t worry too much about perfecting or finishing anything yet (if you don’t start then there’s nothing for you to perfect or get done. and it will never get done)
- listen to old and simple (aka non-distracting) podcasts, Youtube videos, or café/ chattering white-noise, etc. simply leave them as background noise to create an illusion of being outside your room (bring the presence of people to you. my favorites lately have been slam poems from 2016, Mae Martin’s stages, and Awsten Knight’s crackhead podcasts)
- set timers, for both study sessions and breaks (so that you don’t overwork, burn out, or procrastinate. the Pomodoro technique works great here)
- take advantage of the comfort of your own home (light a candle, have crunchy snacks, play loud music, review notes out loud while pacing around, wrap yourself in a blanket burrito, study on your bed if you can focus there like me, etc. basically anything you can’t do in a classroom, office, or the library)
- if you miss your friends, call/ text/ facetime them, make a study group chat with them, etc. (that is what technology is for)
- choose recreational activities/ self-care for your breaks instead of going on social media (go on walks, make small art, play an instrument, stretch, take a nap, etc. I usually reach for my guitar, brainstorm writing ideas, or sketch very simple line art.)
- if you want to go on social media, do it during meal times - or the 15 minutes after your meals that you can’t work just yet (it also doesn’t make you feel like you’re wasting time)
- study in different rooms for a change of scenery (dining room, living room, the patio, etc. I have an armchair next to the window that I study in whenever I need some sunlight and don’t have to write anything down. however, if you need a designated place to focus on your work, you can also use these alternative spaces as designated “relax” or “creative” place for your breaks)
- use this as an opportunity to take care of yourself (get enough sleep, drink water, exercise, talk to your family, take your meds, be mindful of your mental health, etc.)
Feel free to add your tips. The current situation sure is unpleasant but it is unavoidable. All we can really do now is take care of ourselves, others, and try to make the best out of this.
Good luck to everyone and stay safe! My heart is with you all 💕

SOCIAL DISTANCING - STUFF FOR YOU TO DO AT HOME!
I literally can’t stress enough how important it is to stay home at this time if you are able to. We need to stop this bitch of a virus from spreading as much as we can. Do your part, be a goddamn hero. All you’re being asked to do is stay the fuck home. If you have to go to work, take all necessary measures, and stay safe. Anyways I was thinking of stuff to do while we are all home, and came up with a list I thought could be helpful, so here we go!
Spring clean your entire house.
Clean out and organize your wardrobe.
Try out different outfits so that you’ll have new options once you can go out again.
Organize your documents.
Tackle those taxes you’ve been needing to do.
Clean out your computer files.
Clean your makeup brushes.
Declutter expired makeup while you’re at it.
Organize your skincare products!
Try some of the face masks you’ve been hoarding.
Do a hair mask.
Follow that makeup tutorial you’ve seen on youtube but was too lazy to try.
Take selfies of that makeup look to register it bc you ain’t going anywhere.
Read that book you hadn’t had the time to start. Hell, read a whole book series.
Binge watch tv shows on netflix, amazon prime, hulu, disney+, or whatever floats your boat.
Learn a new skill online.
Take up a new hobby.
Try at home yoga/pilates, by following youtube videos or downloading an app.
Get some writing done.
Learn new recipes, attempt cooking/baking out of your comfort zone.
Play with your dog.
Learn how to dance??!! By following youtube tutorials.
Learn a new language through duolingo or a similar app.
Play boardgames with your family.
Or play a videogame.
Put some music on, light a scented candle and try to meditate (there’s apps you can use for instructions).
Go to your backyard or your balcony and soak in some sunlight.
If you have none of the above, open your windows and let the sun in.
Try different diys (make some slime idk what the kids are doing these days).
Facetime with your family/friends.
Start a bullet journal.
If you have the space, take up gardening.

We have officially gone online for the next month. Today was a rough day for faculty and grads - the email came out during the first class of the day and it was impossible to refocus.
The professors I TA for were just so beaten down by all of this and our grad advisor was stuck in meetings all day so we had no idea what we were supposed to do, as staff members.
My university is considering cancelling classes after our spring break.
My thesis advisor has only gone into complete apocalypse prep mode and sent me (an actual hypochondriac) into several panic attacks, but it's fine.
We just have until Friday to get our classes ready to go entirely online - both the classes we're teaching and the ones we're taking

Oh wow. It's been almost 2 years since I've been here... Oops.
Updates:
- BAE and I got engaged in Dec. 2018
- finished my undergrad thesis
- presented at a conference
- got into grad school
- graduated!
And now I'm in my MA program, about to start work on my Master's thesis (this summer).
This helped with motivation before, so I'm hoping it works again!

Today was the last of 3 tests for the week
I also finished my annotated bibliography that’s due in 2 weeks and went to a training for a community event one of my societies is working at the end of the month.
Bae and I are trying to cut out added sugar. It’s Day 4 and I think the detox stage is finally winding down... yesterday was the WORST. I’ve had a migraine brewing for the past 2 1/2 weeks and it finally just HIT ME. ugh

okay but two of my professors are married and I’m doing research with one, but they honestly treat me like I’m their child
It’s great
if you ship two professors is it a scholarship?

My Research Binder
Tumblr media
I have a 1.5 inch binder for everything
Timeline (deadlines set by the school and my own personal goals)
Thesis info packet - every piece of info the school has provided me
Notebook (my old method of organizing; also easier to carry around)
Reading notes
Papers from meetings with my advisor (and notes)
Extra school info (things I need to turn in) in a plastic sleeve
Notebook paper and graph paper in a plastic sleeve (easy access; I like taking notes on graph paper because I write small)
Plain white printer paper in a plastic sleeve
Extra plastic sleeves
Also in the back, I keep the current library schedules
This just keeps all of my work in one place. I do plan on adding dividers in the next few weeks when I start writing more...
I also have a color coding system for my planner and computer, so when I write notes, the thesis fits in my usual system.
