if you’ve been following me for a while, you know i absolutely hate dwvey being seen as the “mom” friend of the group. there’s a lot wrong about it- david is too new to the group to ever be seen as a maternal figure, for instance- but it is so so SO prevalent in fics, particularly those taking inspiration from livesies.

but west endsies is smashing that trope to bits and let me talk about why.

as we know i have not seen west endsies but. BUT. from what i have heard and how it has been explained to me….. davey is no longer giving mom friend energy to the extent that ben fank unknowingly gave, because ryan plays him so weird and quirky as the show goes on. and i am just calling that an absolute WIN for jacnation

like i dont think ben fank intended to play him as mom-friendy, i think most of that is misconstrued by fanon seeing davey in a way he’s not intended to be seen, but from what i’ve heard about ryan’s performance, he’s way too awkward and shaking-like-a-leaf-ish to be seen as the “””mother””” of the newsies and i am so fucking HAPPY about it

bc even ryan himself said that as the show goes on, he starts playing davey weirder and weirder and you can see that This davey is just another teenager who wants friends and gets them in the form of brotherhood. this davey knows what the right thing is, and he does it, no matter how reluctant he may be. he’s not scared, per se, but he’s just iffy on the whole thing until he gets his stride in act II.

i think @jack-kellys put it best when they said:

now bear in mind again i bave not seen the production but just based on everything ive heard about this davey. this is the conclusion ive come to and as an AMFD (anti-mom-friend-davey) supporter, it is what is keeping me going in these trying times

I (finally) saw Newsies in the West End tonight and I have so many thoughts but the one I absolutely need to get out tonight is that London Davey Jacobs is absolutely autistic.

He stims, he stutters over his thoughts, he infodumps, he fidgets when he's nervous, he has a very interesting, unique tone when speaking and has a very rigid posture.

I don't know if it was intentional or not but I've always seen Davey as autistic - in both News Boys and the Broadway adaptation - but the way Ryan Kopel chooses to portray Davey is so authentically autistic.

He's shown to be incredibly uncomfortable with social interaction and touch initially but the Newsies accept him all the same and it's beautiful to see.

My absolute favourite Davey stims were him rubbing his fingers up and down the newsie newspaper bags and him tapping his hands when Jack made him speak in front of the other News Boys.

I really loved this show. I've waited my whole life to see it and it surpassed all my expectations.

92 jack is a depressed teen, broadway jack is a slut, newsies japan jack is a badass, and uk jack is a loverboy.

#LetCrutchieSayFuck finally came true fansies. I was sat front row Brooklyn and after The World Will Know when Les runs off to go back home with Davey, Matthew Duckett (who is absolutely incredible btw) mumbles ‘For Fuck’s Sake’ under his breath before exiting and it was the funniest thing

davey pushing jack against the wall as a parallel to that scene in 92sies and it's just like that moment and davey has a scary as fuck "remember who you're dealing with" look on his face and then he starts to walk away and sees another newsie and is grinning as if that didn't just fuckin happen and THATS when jack finally understands all the things he's been feeling the past few months

Blink would be THAT kid in class who's never studying never taking notes and putting low effort into all his assignments and is still on top with high Bs and As. He falls asleep in class and everyone thinks 'this bitch is gonna bomb this test' and wakes up 15 minutes before class is over and finishes it in that time and later is like 'guys look a 92!' and they all throw pencils and paper balls in his direction while groaning.

also i think like. davey has been trying to act like an adult for so long but he isn't. he's a teenager. and I think finding his place with the newsies gives him a space to be a kid again. he doesn't have to parent them, he doesn't have to take care of them, he doesn't have to provide for them, they're just his friends. he gets to goof off and be less serious and spend time being silly and stupid and getting into the kind of trouble that teenage boys get into when left alone with a bunch of other teenage boys. and that's important
