i feel like an npc at my job and i love it
catch me walking around in a library in a small historical house, straightening books on the shelves and occasionally calling out a hello to people who ring the bells on the door coming inside

okay i take back every bad thing ive ever said about the red hood duela dent arc, its actually brilliant it just takes a hell of a lot of context to understand it.
there's the context of the red hood/arsenal comics where she sets herself up as a joker figure to jason, same as the joker is to bruce, attempting to drive him mad. and theres a moment when jason asks her to let him help, and she refuses, just like the joker refuses batman in the killing joke. but when they come around the second time in rh:o, duela accepts the help. she says the joke isnt funny anymore, and she takes off the mask. jason did what bruce never could--he helped a joker get sane. and i think he could do it because he was always in that precarious place right between the joker and batman--caught in the crossfire, and inhabiting the gray zone between righteous and irredeemable. he could pull duela out because he was a step closer to her than bruce could get to the joker. when bruce steps closer, he succumbs to the insanity rather than holding steady (or at least its implied, and he kind of says the same thing himself at times). but jason... somehow jason can live in the gray zone and still retain himself. his sense of self is hard to define at times, but he always knows what he wants and where he stands, at the very least.
and honestly... i think thats my favorite thing about the red hood. he pulls people out of the abyss. he never steps entirely out of the shadows himself, but he will extend a hand to someone else, until they can get their own grip and climb past him. he did it with roy and kori, and with the random pyg minion in batman reborn, and with duela dent, and suzie su, and bunker, and ma gunn, and in a way even his own father. he does it all the time, and i love him for that.

oh nice!  when you pick up a random comic it’s always hit or miss whether or not it’s actually in character or fits in a wider framework of characterization, but it sounds like shadow of the batgirl is a hit, haha
i’ve been looking to read more cass comics, what would you suggest for other cass reading?
hey fandom, how do we feel about shadow of the batgirl?

fuck all of u bitches with bad taste welcome to night vale did not have THE MAIN CHARACTER, THE NARRATOR, say hes in gay love at first sight with another man in goddamn 2012 when the best you could get was, like, glee, for you to say its only legacy is that some ppl r being cringe abt horror. fuck you.
people's standards have dropped so fucking low n some of u have never had that experience of listening to the pilot for the first time and hear cecil wax poetic about how handsome and mysterious carlos is and have it be completely normal and expected! do you know how unprecedented that was? do you know how healing it was to hear gay love being talked about with such candor and without shame, without restraint?
wtnv was incrediblyy ahead of the curve in a lot of ways and it continues to be almost a decade later and i REFUSE to let yall slander it like this. it isnt even a horror podcast it's a comedy with horror elements but it was never meant to be scary. the way that wtnv also does satire so well n the scathing critiques of contemporary society (esp the surveillance state)..... just say u never understood what it was (is & continues to be) abt and go lol no need to embarrass urself

....................this is especially poignant because of the battle for the cowl pages i just read.  like... there’s a moment where dick LITERALLY says take my hand, and jason won’t do it.  he’s literally giving up his family for his ideals.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and he later implies in the rebirth RHATO series that he’s burned all the bridges back to them, that he couldn’t have his family anymore if he WANTED to because of the choices he made.
Tumblr media
but at the very end of red hood: outlaw... there’s the arc with duela going home, as irredeemable as her actions were.  and jason... he follows in her footsteps.
Tumblr media
i’ve said before that i can see jason’s arc going either way in canon, or maybe weaving around and touching on them both at different times for different reasons.  and honestly... there it is.
personally, i hope he does get to go home, even if it is just for a little bit.  something tells me he needs that.
i’m starting to realize there are at least two camps of jason todd fans.
there are the ideological campers, who took under the red hood and ran with it.  the ones who believe whole-heartedly that jason todd is a character with a moral stance–counter, perhaps, to the man who raised him and the monsters that shaped him, but extant, all the same.  these people see jason shucking his ideals in canon and scoff, saying that it is a loss of integrity and a tragedy of what was good characterization.
and then there are the emotional campers.  the ones who saw jason todd’s pain, his desire for a family who loved him enough to act as executioner.  it wasn’t an ideological purity that drove him–it was the emotional one, the familial one, and these people see jason struggling to mend bridges once burned and cheer him onward.  the ones who desperately want to see him shed his lone wolf persona and really, truly, become a part of the family.
in some sense, it ends up being a question of how faithful to the original characterization you want to be.  when jason is the villain and often when he’s the outlaw, he is antithetical to batman by nature.  he grips his pain and grief in his hands and uses it to act, same as batman, but in a diametrically opposed way.  in order to hang onto this, to keep this opposition in place, he cannot have his family.  but in order to have his family, to change from what he once became, he cannot have his ideals.
and i think it’s neat, because both of these camps want jay to succeed, you know?  but the question lies in whether they want that success to be in ‘cleansing gotham’/‘ridding the world of that which hurt him so no one else can be hurt’, so that he might save the world…
…or if they want it to be just him, reaching out a hand to someone and asking to be lifted up, so that he might save himself.

so like. obviously it's an immensely tragic route to take but sometimes it's just so satisfying for a story to go "there's no happy ending this time. resistance is futile in this scenario. the 'good guys' can't win. this is a pointless last stand. so for their final act, our beloved characters are going to rock the antagonist's shit so fucking hard it makes you stare at a wall struggling to process what just happened and how you feel about it for hours afterwards."

GLAD YOU (finally) ASKED.
so there’s a bit in batman: battle for the cowl where jason is dressed up as batman and is killing people, and tim (also dressed as batman, stay with me) goes to find him and stop him.  and in this bit, this conversation occurs:
Tumblr media
(in case it isn’t clear, tim is the one in blue and jason is the one holding the batarang)
And it got me thinking, like... no one up to this point has managed to convince Jason to quit his crusade, right?  But maybe it’s simply because they’re all coming at it from too far removed.  They can’t see things from his point of view just as he can’t see things from their point of view.  There’s no way to cross the gap.  BUT.  If anyone is smart enough to realize he might be able to reach Jason and guide him toward the light by becoming something closer to morally black himself, it might be Tim.
Now, in canon of course he refuses.  But imagine if he agreed to become Jason’s side-kick?  And slowly started to find ways to mitigate Jason’s more violent tendencies?  Like... Jason kills people who he thinks are irredeemable, right?  But what if there was a way to give them a second chance, while also removing them from their former lives?  Forced amnesia is certainly morally rocky, but hey, it’s better than murder, right?
So that’s the idea!  Tim slowly guiding Jason back to the light by climbing down into the shadows WITH him.
i have had a FANTASTIC batfam fic idea you guys
