The wolf mother Mor lived with her daughter Awyr in the eastern plains. In the sun they travelled and played. In the moonlight Mor hunted and then together they feasted. At dawn one day Mor returned to find Awyr slain by a young hunter. She cried to the star god Eruhan and asked him to bring her daughter back, but Awyr’s spirit had left her little body. “Though you seem to meet her here, flesh to flesh, your child is somewhere far beyond. You can chase her for eternity in the living realm but you will never reach the place she’s gone. She is always just over the edge of the horizon. If you wish to leave this earthly form, you can join her before she reaches the depths of the current. If you choose this path, neither you nor she will ever see another soul again.” Mor agreed to the terms of the star-god and was swept away by a strong wind. Eruhan was so moved by the mother’s love for her child that he granted her the ability to walk among the living when the sun shone and to join Awyr beneath the current when the moon rose. Mor found herself each night in the dawn between life and death, the space between earth and the current of the stars. There she found Awyr and they live together each night in a place just beyond the living world. They run through the same fields but don’t disturb the grasses. Sometimes you can hear them, softly, in the distance. They speak of things to come far beyond the horizon where they meet. Some call this the language of the leaves.

Time for a fox compilation! I’ve really enjoyed taking some time to paint foxes lately (even though the bottom ones are a few years old…) :) gotta move on to another animal that isn’t a canine or feline now!!
Any animal suggestions? Let me know in the comments!

Sketch Process.
1. Line Sketch + Background colors: I always get the background colors down first because it will influence all my other color choices. I picked a cooler background because the fox will have warmer tones, and it helped with contrasting the character since this was a white on white image.
2. Under Painting: I add a warm underpainting with a little color and texture variety. I want warmer shadows, cooler lights.
3. Midtones: I lay in a slightly lighter color, mapping out the fur to give a quick indication of length and direction. I’m working a little darker than I need to, because this is a white animal and I don’t want to go too light too fast or else I won’t be able to build up the fur.
4. Second fur pass: I build up the detail in the fur, get down some darker colors to bring out places of interest like the eye. I get rid of the line art at this stage so  I can build up more of the structural lines with more painterly strokes.
5. Value Adjust + Occlusion + Highlight: I adjust the brightness of the character using levels. Then I add in the highlights and pop in a few occlusions in the fur. I try not to do too many occlusion shadows in the fur, as these add high areas of contrast and I don’t want to draw the eye too much to them.
6. Markings: I add markings and work out the composition of the dragon. This was already worked out in a thumbnail, so I knew how it would look, but didn’t have all of it figured out, like how the tattoo would look on the fur, so I played around with it for awhile. I add the blue markings with an overlay layer, and then made a new layer to build up the colors on top.
7. Final: I clean up edges and play around with a few more compositional elements I felt it needed, like the addition of the tail. I also soften the contrast in the background because I found it too distracting, (Note: I actually liked the look of the background in step 5, but it ended up hurting the overall composition, so I changed it) and also add some color interest. Since this isn’t a full illustration, I don’t spend too much time making it a tight render, but I do work on it until I feel it has a completed look to it.
Software: Photoshop CS6 + Wacom Intuos 4 tablet
Painting time: 2 hours.
