A member called the front desk on Saturday to request a forecast of the upcoming week's pool water temperature.
Sorry lady, this isn't The Weather Channel. We aren't going to give you estimates based on glorified guesswork. The pool water is its own master, it answers to no one. Sure, we try to maintain within a certain temperature range, but in the end, the water does what it wants. Good luck to us all.

"Man, you OWNED this place! How long ago were these pictures?!"
—New lifeguard, to me, while looking through old pictures
I was surprised and touched to hear such a new face at the pool acknowledge my long history here. With only a few of the OLD crew left, the golden days seem like a distant, forgotten past at times. The new people don't know all the legendary stories, and even if we told them, you had to be there, y'know? Now a sub, it feels like my influence is slipping away and at times I wonder if I have made any impact upon the place or the people during my time here. But moments like these provide a little feedback that people do notice and value my longevity here. 💗

Needless to say, staff was a bit peeved when a security camera was installed in the Guard Room. As always, we troll rather than voice our objections.

You know you have become an adult when you no longer lament the summer rains ruining your trip to the swimming pool and instead stand in the guard room looking out over the pool area bordered by crisp brown grass with hands on your hips, saying "Aw yeah, we needed this".

The kindness of the pool people never ceases to amaze me. Some of the elderly folk from the 9am Hydroworks class go to $5 Tuesday at the local movie theater together now and have a great time! Our only resident mermaid is having knee surgery and her Saturday morning pool buddy is driving her to the hospital. The senior guard's birthday is this month and the Hydroworks crowd is eagerly gathering presents from everyone, as they do every year. He usually gets so much money from them that he can buy himself a REALLY nice pair of shoes (sneakers for teaching water aerobics, of course) and take his wife out to dinner. Over the years, members have gone through hard divorces or dealt with crippling illnesses and other members are always there to support them.
