The entirety of the Crawford-Madrimov card in LA this August.
Again, Crawford-Madrimov is a good fight. Tim Tszyu vs Vergil Ortiz is heat. David Morrell vs Kalajdzic is fine. Andy Cruz fight is always welcome. Ruiz vs Miller is slop, but could be fun slop. And Valenzuela vs Isa Cruz is a fun fight that probably shouldn't be for a title but it is.

Thoughts on murphy vs barboza? How do you see it going?
I had to rewatch Leone Murphy fights cause I remembered 0 about him as a fighter outside the Amirkhani KO.
My impression of him is he’s a big strong featherweight who smaller grapplers break themselves on. He’ll get taken down a lot early but can get up and tired his opponents out. Got a quick shot too. Will break guys down from top control. On the feet he’s got some nice straight punches. He switch hits a lot. Likes kicking from open guard to the body and will change levels for the long reaching shot to the body. He’s willing to back up and let folks come forward. He’ll blitz occasionally to scare fighters off him.
He doesn’t seem like the typical fighter that has broken Barboza in the past. While he’ll occasionally get on the front foot, he’s not a pressure fighter. Barboza is a great defensive wrestler when he’s not forced to run on the retreat. He’s still pretty damn athletic and if you’re just going to give him a range kickboxing match on the feet, I have to pick Barboza to wins those

Looks like we’re getting Crawford vs Madrimov at 154lbs for Madrimov’s title, which is a solid fight.
Isaac Cruz vs Jose Valenzuela for the WBA super lightweight title. Happy Valenzuela is getting a big fight after the Colbert wins.
Andy Ruiz vs Jarrell Miller is meh
Leo Santa Cruz vs Abner Mares 3 is gross.

Thoughts on the Haney vs Garcia fight? didn't watch it live because I thought it was an easy Haney W but after waking up I couldn't have been more wrong. Is this a failing on Haney's end? Or is Ryan Garcia good?
I didn’t watch it but it can’t be anything other than a Haney failure.

Karine Silva vs Yan Qihui - DWCS Season 5
Brazilian flyweight Karine Silva (17-4) has carved herself out a niche as the dangerous submission artist at 125lbs. Thus far, her list of victims in the UFC includes a revenge win over Maryna Moroz, Ketlen Souza, and Poliana Botelho. Kind of sucks Gillian Robertson went to 115lbs, because that could have been a good fight.
We'll see how far that can take her as she climbs the ladder at flyweight. She is scheduled to fight this Saturday (April 27) when she faces off with Ariane Lipski (17-8) at UFC Fight Night: Nicolau vs. Perez.

How do you think Diego Lopes stacks up with the elite end of FW. Saw a post calling for him to fight Yair later this year and that got me excited. How do you feel he stacks up against the rest of the division?
Just sat down and watched thru 4 Lopes fights (Yusuff, Sabatini, Brito, and Tucker) for this question.
I still have more questions than answers for Lopes. He’s incredibly versatile. He’s incredibly dangerous in the middle of grappling and clinch exchanges. Whenever he’s got a good feel of range and positioning (basically when he’s got a hand on you or you on him). there’s a switch in his head that flips to “finish” which I respect. That said, I’ve seen him initiate none of these exchanges. Even his pressure seems more like a consequence of smaller fighters panicking to close range on a huge opponent than dedicated pressuring.
The things that worry me against top level featherweights, particularly someone like Yair is that I don’t get the sense Lopes is all that fast. Brito beat him to the punch repeatedly. Was winning jab exchanges with him too. Yair is not a clinch fighter and is essentially invisible. He only really fades to top control grapple/wrestler types. That just seems like a poor match up where he’s going to have to close range against one of the best athletes and dangerous range fighters in MMA.
Beyond that, fights with people like Josh Emmett, Giga Chikadze, Barboza, and Allen feel like they have similar limitations for Evloev. They’re all people who operate at range and can shut down slower fighters. That said, Lopes is tough and big as hell. I could see him wearing down a smaller guy like Emmett mentally and eventually forcing a shot that ends with Lopez hurting him in the chaos. And a guy like Allen tends to fight to his opponent’s level so who knows.
I think the more interesting fights are with the grapplers. Mitchell, Sterling, etc. Hell, I think a fight with Ige could be a fire fight. On the fence on how a fight with Ortega would go cause honestly Lopez is kind of a bigger version or early him, just a bit more lethal and less pressure-y. And I don’t know if we’d get pressure Ortega or the “I’m an out fighter” Ortega who busted up KZ.

Ok so I’ve watched the fight. Fun fight. Ugly fight. Weird fight.
Devin and Bill Haney came into this fight both very prepared for Ryan Garcia and incredibly underprepared for Ryan Garcia. For example, pressuring! Haney pressuring, forcing Garcia back to the ropes and corner with body jabs was a good idea. Get underneath him, zap his energy, try to take away the hook, force him to reach downstairs to defend so you can go land your own hook safely, etc. plus Garcia still does that stupid shoulder roll where he turns his entire back to his opponent while literally having his foot all in-between their legs. And Haney, in spots, was able to just feed body shots to the left side of Ryan’s body. I say in spots because the ref, despite Ryan giving his back up, would stop Haney from throwing sometimes. I think it was the 5-6 where Haney hit Garcia with 4 shots and the ref broke them up. Dumb. Then there were time Haney just grabbed onto Garcia while he was in that position. Also dumb.
How did the Haney’s under prepare? Despite every other boxer calling Garcia a one trick pony, Haney instantly fell for the simplest trick in the Garcia playbook out the gate.
Tumblr media
Garcia touches the rear glove with the jab, inviting Haney to jab with him. And Haney obliges, allowing for Garcia to uncork his left hook. It was 45 seconds into the fight! This is the thing you train for when you face Garcia! And Haney instantly fell for it.
Garcia was incredibly potent when he decided to throw the right hand. He was forced to the ropes where he’d move laterally for much of the fight. Even then, he found some success flurrying forward. For a guy who landed maybe 10 jabs all fight, he did a great job of using it to set up his shots. I didn’t gif it cause I’m lazy, but there was a sequence where he threw out the jab at range. Devin leans back to dodge. Garcia resets and feints the jab heavy before instantly firing the 2 and catching Haney clean. And I think that’s why for a bunch of the 2nd half of the fight, Haney just dropped that rear defending hand to the chin.
Tumblr media
Here again. He’s looking to defend the cross but gets hit with a left hook instead off the jab. Leads to him getting rocked and dropped.
The other place the right hand was landing was in the tie ups. Both guys grabbed all fight long. Ryan particularly liked grabbing around the head while Haney ducked down and grabbed around the chest/waist. More than anything, I think this exposed how much Haney is not an inside fighter. Parts of it reminded me of Plant-Benavidez. Haney would dive into the pocket to clinch, only to not secure the rear arm for Garcia to throw an uppercut or frame off and tag him.
Tumblr media
A clinch initiated by Haney. Garcia has a free hand and just tags him over the top with the right. Granted Haney was hurt here, but this is probably the position you most want that hand secured.
One of the things that bothers me the most about boxers that face clinchers is that they just stop working and complain. There was plenty of that in this fight too, but we did get some good offense in there. But because of this, you’ll see boxers just not punch when they have someone in a bad position because they don’t want to fall into the clinch. While it was incredibly ugly at points, I like how much Garcia would just keep punching. It wasn’t the recklessness that got him caught against Tank in open space.
Tumblr media
I like this sequence on the 10th round knockdown a lot because Garcia basically pushes Haney into a bad position with his left hook. And where a lot of boxers would reset, Garcia just strings 6 more punches together that forces Haney to the ropes.
A lot of Haney’s defense, in hindsight, is really one layered. He can slip or counter one punch but Garcia’s best offense came when he just kept throwing.
Garcia fought a great dog fight in spurts and Haney, unable to really hurt Garcia or make him pay for bad positions, really struggled when Garcia decided he want to be offensive. And while Garcia might be “one note”, dude has to be one of the best in boxing in hooking off the jab.
So is this an embarrassment for Haney or Ryan that good? Yes. I think this is a fight where Haney has the more room for improvement and change. But does he have that in him? Not sure.

Jean-Charles Skarbowsky - Keys to Winning in Thailand | Muay Thai Library
So I have to introduce two people.
Sylvie von Duuglas-Ittu is an American-born muay thai fighter. Back in 2012 she moved from the U.S. to live and train in Thailand as a professional fighter and has been there ever since. At 40 years old she has racked up over 280 fights in her career as well as winning a bunch of championships and tournaments and stuff. She's also a blogger, documenting her training, her experiences with fighting, and more in Thailand. You can find her on 8limbsus.com. She also does interviews with trainers, fighters, etc. If you want a better understanding of Muay Thai on the ground in Thailand as a westerner, she is an invaluable resource. Definitely worth following.
Now Jean-Charles Skarbowsky is a legendary French kickboxer and Muay Thai champion. If you're a longtime MMA fan, you'll recognize him as the drunk guy that GSP brought in who beat up every single fighter on his team during TUF 12. He is one of the best farangs (foreigners) to ever compete. He's one of the few farangs to own gyms in Thailand and has many more around the world. Man is legit.
And Sylvie sat down with him for like an hour to talk shop about fighting, his career, and more. An amazing resource and some fantastic work of preservation/journalism from Sylvie, as always.
