Tell me, how do you feel about the show getting so much darker over time?

You mean MLB? I don't see it as "getting darker" as much as the stakes getting higher (as most shows do) and "the writing going off the rails and rushing through stuff to get to the desired ending" by s5.

Don't get me wrong, it tries to be "darker", but it doesn't really commit to it and ends up retconning characters or events, thus becoming very messy as a result.

For example, Gabriel going off the rails and getting corrupted by the power of multiple miraculous, pushing Nathalie to leave him and actively oppose him. That was a great idea and the writers could have done so much with it, such as having Nathalie team up with Felix or anonimously feed information to LB and CN, but they failed because by doing so it would have "taken away from other things/characters".

Or the most blaitant misstep: Chat Noir using the cataclysm on a human being. Sure he does look disturbed by it after the fact, but for the remaining half of the episode they have Marinette explaining what the audience had already understood to Alya. Adrien's trauma? Never mentioned again, not in that episode or the following ones.

Even Gabriel getting "cataclysmed" falls short because while they show how the toll it's taking on him and that it will end up killing him, in the special that followed s5 (that takes place during s5), the writers show us that LB always had the power to cure him (she cures the magic corruption that's killing AU LB and CN), making all of that drama meanigless, because we know it could have been resolved easly.

What it does achieve is unintentional, for example: Chloe being abandoned by her father with the woman who abandoned, verbally and emotionally abused her; or Gabriel winning in the finale by destroying the world and recreating it to his wishes. Both are really dark, but the writers portray these intances as a "good thing" and a "happy ending".
