Have you ever heard of the “luck of the Irish?” ☘️ Well, this deer didn’t have it. Meet the Irish Elk, Megaloceros giganteus. It was originally discovered in bog deposits in Ireland. Once ranging from western Europe to China, this animal went extinct during the Pleistocene some 10,000 years ago. It was one of the largest known species of deer, weighing up to 1,500 pounds (680 kg). Its antlers, which could reach an incredible 13-foot- (4-m-) spread, were used in ritualized combat between males.

The stories we find in fossils are the tales of our ancestors. Not just direct, but environmental. We are the product of everything that came before. Saying those stories we find aren't true is the epitome of disrespect.
YEC is disrespect and ignorance. It is tantamount to denying recorded history. It cannot be tolerated.

lepidodendron fossils (root impressions,, the holes are vertical roots and the long shallow textured trough is a horizontal root)
There are lots of lycopods nearby, many herbariums have lycopod samples that go back centuries, with DNA that can be used in next gen sequencing …
I like to think the lycopods and the fossils are sitting there together like when you go to a graveyard and wonder if anyone there is a distant distant ancestor of yours

Basalt of an old volcano chamber and the conduit extending out of it. Similar to columnar basalt hexagon time but radial due to the round chamber !
Rough timeline:
Volcano is probably Devonian, most igneous rock here is,
Equatorial swamp in Carboniferous -> lepidodendron and extensive coal veins. Cool sedimentary rock too, with visible effects of tidal deposition,
From then on drift to higher latitudes. And other new places.

Frog Rock
The frog rock is a granite boulder which was fractured and weathered by natural processes that made it develop a shape that resembles a crouching frog. This is an example of pareidolia, which is a human tendency of seeing shapes of animals, human faces etc. in inanimate objects.

(Type coracoid [shoulder bone] of Castignovolucris sebei, from Buffetaut et al., 2023)
Meaning of name: Castignovolucris = Castigno valley bird [in Latin]; sebei = for Stéphane Sèbe [discoverer of the original fossil]
Age: Late Cretaceous (Campanian?)
Where found: Castigno valley, Occitanie, France
How much is known: A right coracoid (shoulder bone).

I'm sorry if the Spino is inaccurate. I stopped keeping up with the updates after they started becoming a monthly thing.

You made it. You held onto life long enough to live to see the day a wizard in a tower somewhere enchants every human in the world to turn into an animal of their choosing for 24 hours, as long as that animal is native to the area the person lives. For this short time you are free. You get to be a critter with your buddies.
