Coming in Like a Western Wind: Chapter 2

Summary: As Barbie starts seriously dating Neil and begins to fall for him, there's unfortunately something in her mind that won't let her fully commit to a relationship--which leads her to make a drastic decision for their future.

Preview:

Alfred is nothing but sunlight and students, the busy baristas behind the counter prepping bagel sandwiches and midday lattes for harried students in hoodies and sweats studying along the wooden countertops lining the windows on either side of the ordering counter. Even though it’s still only the beginning of the new quarter, the threat of winter starts to strip away, the days longer and warmer as people already start to make their spring break plans.

In fact, it’s warm enough for Barbie to order her oat milk vanilla latte iced as she waits for Neil to finish up with his last student. He turns his laptop to show the student something, leaning forward with his hand on his chin as he listens thoughtfully to their response. When he listens, it’s deliberate and intentional, his lips pursing, blue eyes giving the slightest squint to show focus as he nods along. And unlike another professor with which she’s been previously entangled, Barbie can actually read his expressions, can tell when he’s getting into someone’s idea, or when he needs more clarification.

Coming in Like a Western Wind: Chapter 1

Summary: Closure isn't coming easy to Barbie after her evening with Oppenheimer. It's even more difficult when she meets Neil Lewis, a single dad who takes an interest in her—someone who's a little silly and incredibly considerate. But what's holding her back from committing to him completely when things start to go well?

Barbie realizes that in order to move on with her future, she has to go back to the past. And that means having to confront why she's so hung up on this single night affair, including reaping the consequences of seeing Oppenheimer just after the end of the war.

Barbie blinks as she looks between the cover and this man in front of her; there's just no way. His hair's way longer, for one thing, soft dark brown and pushed back from his forehead, curling around the nape of his neck. His nose is more upturned; his eyes, while also beautifully crystal blue and so easy to fall into, are far less sunken, and even though he's thin, at least he looks like he eats a meal every once in a while. His faded charcoal blazer at least fits, and he keeps the top few buttons of his button-down undone and it's untucked. She clocks him to be just a few years older than her—a TA, maybe, or a young professor she thinks, with how he's dressed, and the beaten brown book-bag he carries across his chest.

Summary: Barbie leaves Oppenheimer in the morning, now feeling like a changed woman.

But it's not too terrible if she relaxes here for another moment, right? Take in his heavy, deep breathing since he's still out like a light, his absolutely peaceful expression. Honestly, this is probably the first time he's looked perfectly content, like for once, the entirety of the universe isn't burdening his mind.

Summary: Barbie and Oppenheimer continue their late night conversations (among other things), getting to know each other in a more intimate setting.

And of course in the time since she's been gone, Oppenheimer's smoking yet again, sitting up in bed with that gaze that's both intensely focused and absolutely aloof at the same time. He has one knee up, the sheets draped tastefully over his lap. He reminds Barbie of a painting she once saw at The Getty—not like she can name the artist or piece off the top of her head, but there's just something about the way the light hits him, the smoke from the end of his cigarette dancing toward the ceiling.

Think I Want to Twist the Plot This Time: Chapter 3

Summary: Oppenheimer takes Barbie back to his room at The Palace Hotel.

Preview:

The Palace Hotel boasts nothing too special on the outside; it looks like a nice, art deco style, rectangular building at eight stories, and plenty of windows with a great number of rooms. But as Oppenheimer leads Barbie inside, her jaw drops at the lobby, the large chandeliers sparkling above them, surrounded by marble Grecian pillars and archways holding everything up. The lighting gives everything a warm glow as the ceiling bathes them in what looks like false daylight, instantly welcoming Barbie inside. Whoever he was trying to impress with booking this hotel is a lucky gal, indeed. When she visited San Francisco with the family last year, she and Sasha switched off between sleeping on the couch and the other bed in their standard Hilton room. This place looks like it's only inhabited by royals, politicians, and celebrities.

Summary: Barbie gets herself settled in The Dawn Club, but soon finds herself inexplicably drawn to the patron that walks in after her.

Barbie tosses the old newspaper back into the trash and walks toward the club, her confidence building as she hears the familiar click of her heels on the pavement. Sure, her feet will tire a lot more easily now, but it's easily forgotten when that sound is so enticing. She's almost forgotten it; almost forgotten why she loved heels in the first place. Not that she thinks there's some real reason she's here other than she just let her mind wander for too long, but something about The Dawn Club, on this warm summer evening, tells her that whatever adventure she's looking for is in its walls.

Summary: What starts as another routine trip back to Barbie Land turns into a time traveling detour as Barbie finds herself in 1942--and meets one of history's most infamous figures.

Preview:

She can take the snowmobile and all her other modes of transportation back to Barbie Land. She can swim with Mermaid Barbie and discuss all the new things she's learned with President Barbie and be comfortable with everything she knows, then go back to LA and watch Vanderpump Rules with Gloria tomorrow morning. If she goes to Barbie Land, nothing changes. It's a safe cocoon, wrapping her in a warm blanket of comfort, of everything she knows.

Isn't that part of why she became human in the first place, to venture out into those uncomfortable territories? To learn everything about creating and making her own path? What's the harm of seeing the world as it used to be, just for a night? Dance with someone new, lose herself and see how the past can shape her future? Besides, she loves the leg warmers from the 80s, the jumpsuits from the 70s, the big hair from the 60s. Can she go to a time… before Barbie, even?

Im... not getting the Tortuga, 😅

Tortuga is the island most of the characters frequent in the Pirates series, and since The Little Mermaid is set in the Caribbean, I think it would be cool to see a crossover 😭
