Hey, everybody. Today I come bearing news that is...a mixed bag. As of now, The Illusion of Safety is officially being canceled. This is for a multitude of reasons, but the largest is that it's no longer something I'm proud of. This was the first podcast I ever conceived of, and while it allowed me to grow exponentially, this means that it's no longer the quality I've come to expect from myself. I want to use the energy I've been putting into this podcast to create something higher quality that I can be proud of, and that will be better for all of you. However, this does not mean the end of TIOS entirely! While I can't say much yet because things are still in the works, it's very likely that you can expect to see these characters in a future project! The episodes are all going to be taken down on Monday (7/12) but I'll leave the social media and the discord open-at least for now-as an easy way to update you all when I have something more I can say! Thank you all so much, and I look forward to producing more content for you all because you're absolutely lovely. We have been blessed to have the support we have.

The writing for seven of hearts feels very different do you have a different writing process or is it the same?
I hadn't realised they felt different! There are two answers I can give you here:
1: The worldbuilding, character creation, and writing for seven of hearts is very largely collaborative. I am the one who writes the scripts, but I'm generally on call, and we extensively discuss the plot for the seasons/series as a whole, even if I'm given a bit more freedom in terms of the episode to episode plot beats. It's not just me behind SOH so I'd imagine the story feels much different than one that is all my creation!
2: Seven of hearts is very plot driven and world driven, we had our idea for the plot long before we created the characters. In TIOS, I had the characters long before the plot, as I took them from another project that I abandoned years ago. (This is also the reason I now dislike the first episode-I took old characters and placed them in a completely different universe, and then naively assumed they would not change. Spoiler: They did. A lot.) So, in Seven Of Hearts the characters are driven by the plot, and in TIOS the story is driven by the characters. I hope this makes sense lol its an important distinction in my mind!

Why do the TIOS characters swear so much? arent you worried about E ratings?
I need you to understand that when I write, that is me showing restraint. I think I use the word 'fuck' every other sentence. This is me trying not to make them swear too often.

Has it really only been a week?
I should have made it clearer-Eisa is exaggerating! By my estimate, it's been two and a half weeks, maybe three-still not a very long time at all!

Hey! Love the podcast! I was wondering how far in advance do you plan your storylines? Do you have the whole thing intricately plotted? Is it loose, do you do it season by season? Also do you have a favoutite character to write?
I'm so glad to hear that, thank you! The larger structure of the story and bigger plot beats + character arcs are planned out, but are subject to change depending on where the story needs to go and or the way the characters change as I'm writing them. There are some things that are pretty set in stone, but episode by episode things are a bit fluid and tend to come to me as I'm writing them. However, that larger plan has been reconstructed a couple times, so I suppose we'll see how set in stone anything really is.
My favorite character to write has to be Cy! She's an absolute delight, and my favorite character type-a deeply traumatized person covering their issues with sarcasm and jokes. She always says the sarcastic, witty things I'm thinking and I love her for that. Her POV definitely comes easiest, and her episodes are always written pretty quickly!

Could you talk more about how magic works in the TIOS universe? It seems so different depending on who's talking about it
Absolutely I can! Think of magic in the TIOS universe as, while not sentient, living in its own way. It exists naturally in the world, and everywhere. On its own, it is neither good nor bad, harmful or harmless-it simply Is. It can be harnessed for great good, or terrible destruction. There are many people in this universe who produce magic within themselves, as naturally as they produce blood or bone marrow or skin cells. Magic, like any other living being, wants to survive-and therefore, quite a lot of abilities develop or change to aid someone in survival. They usually develop in childhood, though in some cases either don't develop or go unnoticed until adulthood. This can be seen in the TIOS characters in the following ways:
Raven: On a survival level, Raven was a very sickly child. This led to their magic focusing on healing. It has been to their detriment sometimes-they walk with a limp and use a knee brace for an injury that healed automatically before it could be set properly. On a personality level, Raven is a naturally caring person who wants to help people-though in recent years events have led them to attempt to (at least outwardly) deny that impulse.
Cy: On a survival level, Cy grew up in a hostile and extremely volatile household, which is where her power first developed. As most abuse survivors know well, this kind of environment can lead to a hyper-awareness of everyone around you, knowing what minute shifts in tone or body language mean that they might be getting angry or upset. Cy developed empathy focused magic as her magics effort to allow her an extra warning to aid in her escape from or deescalation of these situations, and even her ability to manipulate others emotions as an attempt to not allow others to get angry enough to hurt her. On a personal level, she is a naturally caring person, receptive to the needs of others, and someone who enjoys making those around her happy.
Tris: On a survival level, their powers did not play much of a role-rather, the trauma they went through shaped their personality in a way that influenced their power. They developed telekinesis as a way of "acting out" and getting the attention he needed and wanted, and as a subconscious defense mechanism. When they got older this power shifted as their situation, outlook on life, and mental state changed. Tris's magic is unstable and chaotic, but also extremely versatile-it is as shifting and inconstant as their very shaky sense of self/personality. Their BPD absolutely influences their magic in many ways, and is a large part of the reason they are able to do so many different things. Most-if not all-magic users could train themselves in the same way, but Tristan took to it with an ease that was definitely influenced by their inconsistent nature and the constant change in how they view themself.
Eisa: Eisa is the best example of someone whose magic was not influenced by survival or trauma, but almost entirely by personality. He is someone with a very short temper and anger issues (which he has consistently worked on, and attended therapy for for a while-this is part of the reason he's so hesitant to go back as he believes himself "cured") His power is a manifestation of his destructive tendencies, though neither it nor he is inherently destructive or dangerous. I don't mind saying that, due to recent events and the trauma he has undergone, we are going to see shifts in his power as he changes as a person, and he will grow in leaps and bounds in many different ways, in a personal and a magical sense.

We're on tiktok, by the way! It's mostly memes and behind the scenes footage, but I think it's funny. (Is Ryder a girlboss? Discuss 🤔)

Do you have a favorite part of the production process?
Probably recording or writing! I love writing, and I absolutely adore all my VA's-they're an absolutely joy to work with. Least favorite, though, is definitely sound editing lol

Hi there!
We are holding auditions for Keep It Steady Podcast for about two more weeks, and so far, we haven't received a single audition for Krista.
A theater kid through and through, Krista lives to tell a good story. One of very few Black kids in a predominantly white school, and very aware of it. Can come across as flighty, but in actuality thinks deeply about the things that matter to her. Protective of her friends. Has an enormous crush on Leslie.
(The role is recorded remotely.)
Audition info here. Please signal boost!
