Haven't been posting much but I'm still keeping up to date with the boys' activities. GG's vlog makes me feel all cuddly. He's so cute... but Bobo's NYE stage? I have no words.

That was so unexpected but yet expected. From his time on SDOC we can already see his developing interest in such modern interpretative styles. I'm so proud of him. Always pushing the boundaries yet staying true to himself. And don't get me started on the song. It actually made me tear up a little when I first heard it. Whatever the official description says, to me it's clearly a ❤️ song.

Was working when I heard a familiar voice from the TV. Looked over and it's GG's Darlie ad! On mainstream TV. It's my first time seeing his ad on TV. And on his birthday, no less. Got a little cheap thrill out of it. 😅

Happy to see GG doing well and gaining more recognition worldwide outside of fan circles.

Let's see if Darlie SG launches any XZ merchandise next time. I'm already using the brand so just as well...

Been a while since I heard this from Bobo.

I remember vividly my first impression of GGDD was their incessant 'WOW' in interviews and bts. Back then I wasn't even a 🐢. I thought maybe it was a popular expression in China (like 'cool' or something) but turns out it was just them.

Made my day and brought back fond memories of when I first joined the fandom. And on 9/5 no less. 💚❤

I haven't done a post about our absorbent friend in the past (at least, nothing related to GGDD, just things related to my own status as a huge Spongebob fan - birthday wishes, etc.). But here are a few tidbits that I know about their connection to Spongebob:

GG and DD are both big Spongebob fans, especially GG.

GG has posted birthday wishes for Spongebob in the past.

In 2020 on GG's birthday the actor who does Spongebob's voice in Chinese posted a special birthday message for GG, and GG replied with a Spongebob meme saying, "Am I dreaming?" Unfortunately the actor was badly harassed by GG haters for making the post.

GG posted a sad message when the Spongebob author/creator died (Stephen Hillenburg died in 2018 of ALS 😭).

GG has often used Spongebob stickers and memes, has used a Spongebob background image for his profile on Weibo, and has even used Spongebob as his profile picture in the past.

GG is a huge plushie collector/fan, and was seen with a huge Spongebob plushie during XFIRE.

Uniq did the theme song for the Spongebob Movie OST in China (little known fact). It’s cute af, especially when they performed it live at a fan meet (such fun, adorable chaos 😅).

DD called GG Spongebob during the Sina Day event.

GG was asked to dub Spongebob as part of their Sina Day takeover. DD made fun of GG, much to GG’s chagrin.

Both GG and DD were photographed (separately and at different times) outside a Spongebob exhibition in Shanghai.

Fans have often called GG and DD Spongebob and Patrick because of their personality similarities and their close relationship.

I'm absolutely certain I've missed something, but that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

As a Spongebob fan myself (like, completely OTT fan it's even a bit embarrassing), I have always cheered whenever they talk about him or are in any way connected with him. It's not surprising that they're fans of Spongebob - he's one of the most popular characters on the planet - but that doesn't make it any less exciting. Especially since Spongebob is widely seen as (and even canonically claimed to be) queer.

Haven't watched any Yizhan videos in a long while and today this Nodezero video popped up on my YouTube feed. It's unexpectedly good. Amazing how the scenes are all familiar but yet when put together in this order, it tells a different story. Makes me wanna watch The Untamed again.

This is still the best fmv in my books but this one is pretty good too.

My Liu Liu Mei jellies are finally here!

Bought the 5 flavours variety pack and I've tried the green plum, mango and passion fruit ones so far. I like it, though I prefer it if they were more sour and chewy.

Also bought some sour plum strip thingy cos I like sour stuff. It's not bad, abit like haw flakes but slightly chewy and dusted with sour powder. But not sour enough for me.

Overall I think the LLM jellies are worth buying if you like such stuff. Also makes for a nice low calorie snack!

竹石 Bamboo in the Rocks

This is in response to @rainbowsky's earlier post. I actually know this one. =P Looked into it myself cos I too was curious about the origin.

GG first performed this in January 2020 during the CCTV programme Everlasting Classics. GG appeared in season 1 of the programme, which in a nutshell, aims to promote cultural development through combining literary classics, specifically poetry with modern pop music. In each episode they invite a few stars/musicians to perform these songs. In a way it's to modernise these literary works, make them more palatable to modern audiences, allow them to appreciate the beauty of poems through the performance. The songs in each season are also released in an album I think.

Thus, Bamboo in the Rocks was written for GG in a sense, but it's not exactly his song. The song is based on Qing Dynasty Chinese calligrapher and painter Zheng Ban Qiao’s famous work 竹石. Alongside the painting, he wrote the following poem (which was used in the chorus of the song):

咬定青山不放松 Firmly rooted on the mountains

立根原在破岩中 Nestled amongst the fractured rocks

千磨万击还坚劲 Endless hardships only bring forth greater strength

任尔东西南北风 No matter which way the wind blows

During the episode, GG also shared why he chose the poem as the theme. For the benefit of those who don't understand Chinese, GG cited three reasons:

Growing up, bamboo has always been his favourite out of the four common elements in chinese painting. The Four Gentlemen (四君子), also called the Four Noble Ones, in Chinese art refer to four plants: the plum (梅), the orchid (蘭), the bamboo (竹), and the chrysanthemum (菊). He learnt Chinese painting as a child so he's familiar with Zheng Ban Qiao, who is most famous for his bamboo paintings. So he immediately picked this poem out of the given options.

He described being mischievous as a child, using a fountain pen to draw lines on his textbook. When the ink is drying, he'll smear it with his finger and make small strokes using some of the ink (to draw a bamboo I guess). This part is a bit bizarre hahaha you can see the guests and host's faces go ??? but it shows the cute side of GG.

Bamboo is something that he is familiar with, having seen it often while growing up.

After the performance, while discussing the song, GG shared that the initial rendition of the song was a more oriental, softer version but he felt that it lacked the punch and strength that is reminiscent of bamboo, hence he worked with the composers to switch it to a soft rock version. He also talked about why he feels bamboo represents him:

"Maybe from my appearance and mannerisms, the impression that people have of me is that I’m quiet and introverted but I want everyone to see that my heart is as sturdy and tough as bamboo."

Review: KXZ Spicy Cabbage Rice

Finally managed to try the KXZ Spicy Chinese cabbage rice recently. Was quite looking forward to this one cos it looked really good, and I gotta say, I wasn't disappointed.

Presentation and taste wise, it is rather similar to Korean bibimbap, albeit with much less veggies. It's also not really very spicy so it should be manageable for most people. I quite like the taste, though I can't really put a finger to it. There's heat, but also tastes savoury, plus there's a hint of sweetness. The actual product definitely has lesser ingredients than what's depicted, and the chinese cabbage has less kick compared to korean kimchi. The main ones are the braised pork and mushrooms, cabbage and tiny bits of dehydrated veggies. I also added my own egg towards the end to mimic the picture. The egg makes the end mixture more moist, which I preferred. Also makes it easier to mix. Portion wise, it's pretty filling for me and I didn't even finish all the rice.

Overall I would say it tastes good but kinda pricey for an instant meal. Still worth a try though.

28 Days BJYX Challenge

Day 25: Most Touching BJYX Moment

Got reminded of this after watching the OOL bts of the crewing singing GG's favourite Kepler on his birthday. So..back to the challenge!

One of my favourite bts of all time is the Kepler-Nanhai duet. I don't know what you guys feel when you see the clip but to me, I see a strong connection. There's just something so magical about the moment.

Imagine being in the middle of a noisy film set full of people and movement. People fussing over your hair and makeup. All of a sudden, your eyes meet. One party starts singing and the other party seamlessly joins in with another song at the right moment. The song continues; it's a love song. And the eye contact never broke until the singer stopped singing.

If it was a movie, I imagine in that instant, everyone else would be blurred out or disappear. The air goes still, all sounds muted except the singing. Just the two of them in one shared space, eyes locked and sharing a love song.

I know I know, I'm dramatising things. Some might even call me delulu but I'm just describing the scene I saw when looking at the clip. I really do see the connection and how in sync both parties are, how attentive the piggie must be to be able to join in the singing at that juncture. Seriously, who locks eyes with a co-worker/good friend/bro while singing a love song. Wouldn't it be awkward?!

I also want to add that the version of kepler that GG sang in the clip isn't the original lyrics. The audio is quite poor but it sounded a little like the mish-mashed version he sung during the Nanjing fan meet? Don't quote me on that though.

Also, this isn't exactly a moment; in fact it's just cpn but I was really touched by the birthday message posted on YBO that someone wrote to DD on his birthday. That letter was just so intimate, so heartfelt that I really struggle to see how it could have been written by an employee. Especially the last part where the author asked DD to grow up slowly. I have to say, whoever wrote it, really loves the little piggie.
