One thing I love about adventure time is how it has a structured magic system, but the defining trait of said magic system is that there is no system. But there IS still a system, even though there isn’t.

Magic works differently for literally every being capable of it. Creatures usually become magical through unforeseen circumstances or sudden tragedies, which means every wizard is unique.

EVERY magic user in AT has their own set of rules unique to them. Some of them need magical items or artifacts or spell ingredients, some of them need to say special words or make special hand gestures. Some of them need to rest when they expend too much magical energy.

…And some of them have literally no limits to their magic, they can just do shit freely and are only held back by being completely insane. The universe has a strange correlation between magic powers, insanity, and misery. If you have one of the three, you tend to end up with the other two sooner or later. The universe also specifically nerfs those “no limits” magic users by making them too insane to use their powers to their full extent (see Magic Man, who has universe-altering powers that he only ever uses to irritate or inconvenience random people for fun, due to the fact that he went insane after an elder god killed his wife, or Grandmaster Wizard, whose name is fucking Grandmaster Wizard but the only spell he ever casts is turning people into cats)

To be clear everything DOES operate under specific rules! It’s just that the fundamental rule of Adventure Time’s magic system is “magic will always work in whatever way is most inconvenient to as many people as possible”
