A library is a hospital for the mind

Well, I managed to read 16 books last year which doesn't sound like a lot, but the year was fraught with health issues, both mental and physical. I'm happy I managed what I did but this year but I want to push back this year. I finally had a diagnosis, I have surgeries planned and my health is improving so it's time to work on the mind again!
I had some absolutely beautiful books come to me as gifts at Christmas and even more are waiting in my lists, so it's time to begin. 2 days ago I finished The Library of the Unwritten by A.J Hackwith and today I start Hotel Magnifique, by Emily J. Taylor. I'm very excited for this particular story, especially from the reviews I've read of it so on we go, into a new world! Let the magic abound...

Well, it's autumn and that means I return to my lovely, cosy Tumblr, tucked away in the dimensional realm of the Mahogany Library. It's been lovely to see all the follows and likes over the summer, thankyou for being here with me and I hope you find joy in the things I post.

When I first started this, I wasn't sure I was going to like it. I loved the premise from the synopsis and the cover art really appealed to me but when I read the first couple of chapters it felt like maybe this would be a bit...weaker..than what I'd hoped for.
Well, I was wrong. It did take a few chapters but by the halfway point I was utterly hooked. The characters just worked so well together, things that I thought would be typical tropes turned out to be twisted into something different enough that it kept me fascinated. I love time travel aspects anyway but the way it was utilised in this book was so well thought out that it brought a whole new dimension to my experience of it.
I do acknowledge there were plot holes and flaws in the story, that we did see some old tropes and that there were some curious similarities between some characters or elements in this book and other book series (for instance, I drew strong 'Malfoy' vibes from the Olivers). However, although they were clear, it didn't stop me enjoying the story for what it was.
Really glad this was the first of my 2023 reading challenge because it's set a really good tone to the start of my reading year. Absolutely looking forward to the second book which will hopefully be released this year.

I don't have 12 friends so I decided to take 12 books from my TBR pile instead. Sword and Pen is the final book in the Great Library series (a brilliant series if you have ever wondered what the world might be like, had the library at Alexandria survived). I'm currently reading Only a Monster.
