Final Major Project - Evaluation
This project has pushed me to my very limits as a designer.
As a visual communication practitioner, we are gifted with a multi-disciplinary skillset. With this knowledge, I wanted to showcase my versatility as a multi-disciplinary designer by taking on a motion design led project.
Taking on a project out of my comfort zone has been hugely stressful at times, however It has also materialised to be one of the most rewarding experiences I have undertaken as a designer. The fact that I knew I wanted to create a title sequence early on in the project helped me define a strong critical viewpoint. It has taken me a long time to get to my final outcome, however I am very proud with what I have achieved with little experience with motion design before this unit.
What informed & motivated my design decisions?
To get the ball rolling I knew that I wanted to pick a subject matter that I found inspiring. Within the first two weeks I had established that I wanted to present a project about space. My design decisions were informed by the research of practice I was investigating. This willingness to be drawn into the unknown has provided me with lots of opportunities for experimentation which corresponds to the relationship of research I have explored.
What changes & developments has this project gone through?
The past year I have found that I work in a non-linear style. With this is mind, I knew that defining my subject matter was crucial to developing a critical viewpoint in the realisation, refinement and production of my Major project. The process of storyboarding and making an animatic made it easier for me to stick to the plan as it mapped out my concept concisely. Once I had picked my leading storyboard it was then a case of testing experiments to get the visuals of the concept right. I changed the visuals for the idea many times but the core original ideation stayed the same throughout. I was actively encouraged to return to my fluid experiments for my final piece, so I adjusted my visuals in the final two weeks in order to achieve my fluid nebula look. It was disappointing at the time knowing that I had to go back to the drawing board, however I am glad that I responded to the feedback as the sequence now feels much stronger.
Did I manage my time well throughout the unit?
Considering how vast this project has been, I feel I have been persistent with my work during this unit. Although I could have managed my time better as I have found that I am abit of a perfectionist. It’s a blessing and a curse as I will stay on the same problem for hours trying to get it exactly right. It would be more efficient for me to just leave it, move on and come back to the problem at a later date. In addition to this, being meticulous with a motion design project has presented itself to be a very timely process. So I need to find the right balance moving forward in the future. I applied for the one week extension which helped me realise my final outcome, in retrospect it was one of the best decisions I made as It gave me the chance to get the visuals right. The extra week also gave me the chance to mock up a supporting promotional campaign and any final adjustments for hand in. Because I have never undertaken a motion design project, I think I underestimated how timely the process would actually be. If I were to do this project again, I would now have a better idea of the time scale you need to put into the development, refinement and production of a motion design driven project.
How did I respond to feedback?
I feel I responded well to feedback during this unit. Planning out pro forma presentations made it easy to converse about my project and to highlight what I have done and what I needed to do to move forward. Listening to feedback has been crucial in the development of my final major project which has in turn reflected a well realised body of work reflecting the complexity of this unit. Going back and re-designing my visuals in the last two weeks was a critical point in my project and I am really glad I took the tutors advice on board.
What have I learnt from this unit of study?
During this unit I have taught myself the basics of after effects as-well as cinema 4D and Red giant. Learning this software at an accelerated rate has been one of the most stressful, yet rewarding things I have ever partaken in as a designer. I was completely out of my comfort zone but now I feel at home on after effects which is amazing.
I am also learning what it takes to create high standards of work by putting in the hours to realise professional outcomes. In terms of broader skills I have learnt during this unit, I have taught myself to manage my stress levels much better. In addition to this I have learnt not to take constructive criticism personally which is crucial to my development as a designer.
On reflection, are there any improvements I would make to the final outcome?
In regards to my final outcome, I am very pleased that I re-designed the final look from an energetic tunnel to the fluid nebula tunnel. If I had more time I would play around with distorting the sound when the camera transitions through the window of the tunnel into Earths orbit. I would have also liked to pan the camera into the title of Pandora’s Star , reminiscent of how Stranger Things introduces their first scenes.
I would have liked to have more in my process book , however the word count threw me off and I was trying to be as succinct as possible. Thankfully we have had the opportunity to express ourselves on our blogs to go into more detail reflecting the scope of the longevity of this unit.
My final piece reflects the scope of the storyline effectively and it sets a dramatic tone for the rest of the show. Overall, I am very pleased with what I have produced and I have found a new passion with motion design that I will peruse in my professional career.

Matching up the particle system and Mir tunnel was a challenging task, however I have created a seamless transition between the two spaces for my final outcome to make it look as smooth as possible.
Additionally, I added a wobble/shake to the camera as the viewer transcends through the window of the wormhole into Earths atmosphere.

Choosing my cast
In terms of my cast, there was only one director that I felt that was appropriate for the new Netflix original series.
Christopher Nolan specialises in mind bending, cerebral and often nonlinear storytelling; which is perfect for the nonlinear storyline of Pandora’s Star.
Nolan also picks the same actors and composer for most of his films, which brings an authentic trust to his work.
With this in mind, I have chosen Joseph Gordan-Levvitt and Anne Hathaway for my leading roles.
