A blue and white naval mess plate, c. 1840
These plates were part of Mess 1 and in fact from the 1830s onwards the square wooden plates were replaced by normal tableware, although initially these were only issued to certain flagships or ships of the line. Only later were they issued generally.

Viennese vermeil and enamel wine Nef, after Herman Bohm, circa 1890
This one is made in two parts, the finely detailed masts, rig, crow’s nests, anchor, and figures executed in detailed vermeil, the sails enameled with allegorical panels, the whole supported by an oval enameled bowl form stand, raised on a gilt figural pedestal base depicting Neptune with trident and fish, the conical base with enamel figural scenes and incised with a scrolling border.
