This is my general pet (and plant) blog, with a focus on a more naturalistic style of pet keeping.I also blog about cats at Whole Wheat Grump and fish at Betta Beta. My personal blog is Unsuspecting Fish.
I finally remembered to post my other jumping spiders. First one is Ripley, a red-backed jumping spider. Second one is Reyes, another regal jumping spider.
I got a tomato frog recently, too, that I don’t think I’ve really told anyone about 😅 His name is Cigarette Smoking Man (I will use every X Files name I can, even the most ridiculous). I had to start feeding the isopods his vitamin mix because he’s eating so many of them.
I also just today filled the last of the enclosures I’ve been working on with this Trinidad olive tarantula (I say “last”, but there is an adult enclosure waiting for them). I was originally going for a pumpkin patch, but I couldn’t find a sling in a size I felt comfortable with for my first tarantula, and Josh’s Frogs happened to have this species on sale. It’s another one I’d looked at, and it’s a similar temperament to pumpkin patch, so I decided to give them a try. I don’t have a name, yet.
Someone: Very clearly, explicitly explains that every single species of invertebrate is important in some way to the environment and how insect populations keep dropping which could literally cause ecological collapse if they were to all go extinct
Some absolute genius, every single fucking time: This is it......... This is the perfect post to talk about how much I hate mosquitos/ticks/spiders/wasps on and go "Haha but those icky bad evil mean bugs I hate are an exception right lol???"
I posted this picture on Reddit, which resulted in me going down a rabbit hole trying to properly identify and sex my vinegaroon, and I found this paper:
Anyway, I’ve concluded Mr. Pinchy is, in fact, a female M. giganteus, and no, I’m not changing the name.
I forgot to post about the two jumping spiders I ACTUALLY ordered (better pictures coming), since I’ve been in such a panic to get the other guy set up, but they also seem to prefer crickets to mealworms, and I guess I didn’t really need to worry too much about the crickets being too big (I did purposely put them in the feeding bowls for the other two, though, because they’re still juveniles, and I was more concerned about them getting hurt than the other dude). I do plan to feed them mostly flies, but I’ve been trying to find a local source that doesn’t sell enormous cultures, and I haven’t had much luck. I plan to just get a fruit fly culture at Petsmart on Wednesday, since they have the smallest cultures around, but I’m definitely going to buy another species or two online to give them some variety. I’ve been watching them hunt fungus gnats, and it’s so much fun, so I think they’ll have even more fun with something a little bigger.
I gave him a choice between a mealworm and a cricket and he picked the cricket (and then dragged it into the mealworm dish before I could take it out).
I also got him into a much better home:
I have a few magnetic shelves on the way from Etsy, so I can add more to the top section. I made that little hammock with some cork bark and some magnets I had on hand 😅 It’s not pretty, but I wanted him to have something up there.
If you’re worried about getting an enclosure that’s “too big” for a jumping spider, just know that she’s missing a leg and has still caught several fungus gnats since I put her in here. She’s also enjoying the hell out of exploring.
I also have anxiety and got this cup for feeding, just in case (and so mealworms can’t burrow into the substrate), so that’s also an option, but I definitely don’t think I’ll need to use it quite as much as I thought.
I’ve very meticulously planned out my entire pet room set-up, only to end up with an unexpected extra jumping spider 😅 I can’t really put him out in the living room, so I’m going to have to find a balance between the space I have left in my room and an enclosure I think is big enough. It’s going to be an adventure in DIY, too.
Also, yes, I did, in fact, have everything on-hand to make him this enclosure, because I have a slight problem with hoarding pet supplies.
Pride pods!!! I’m a queer artist and I love bugs so I gotta combine the two with some cute isopod pride acrylic pins! ✨ Along with the pins there’s going to be two stretch goals, one for isopod washi tape and another for isopod sticker sheets!
I got a vinegaroon! I’ve been setting up the tank for awhile, and I finally ordered them last week. I suspect I now have another pet box of dirt, though, because I added a lot of hiding spots in there, plus 5-7” of dirt.
This is also the first pet I’ve had since middle school which requires live feeders, and I almost went with crickets, but I decided I needed to try dubia roaches, first, since I’m also planning to get some jumping spiders, a tarantula, and a frog, eventually. I made a little home for them, too.
They were a good choice.
I also got another millipede, plus 3 more blue death feigning beetles, and the seller threw in an extra of each, so now I’m back to 3 millipedes and up to 10 beetles.
