The strike at Michigan is in week two, by far the longest work stoppage at the university since 1975. The grad students’ union’s demands are centered on better COVID-19 protections and transparency, and anti-racist policing reform on campus.

As of Monday afternoon, the university has filed an injunction against the union, with university president Mark Schlissel saying, “Going to the court was our only choice after learning that the strike would continue.”

No word on how the “good faith” negotiations are going.

UPDATE: In a nearly four-hour debate on zoom, the union voted 59% to reject an offer from the university and continue the strike until at least Friday. The rejection was driven largely by the exclusion of policing demands in the university’s response, which they feel are outside the union’s agreed-upon bargaining positions (related to wages, hours, and working conditions).
