For my dear.
Come back to New Mexico or I'll be forced to build one to get to you! ...not that that would be a bad thing.

Much of my youth was spent hiding under the covers, reading late into the night. Some parents have to yell at their kids for getting in fights- mine had to yell at me for reading too much.

Once, in my father's bookshop, I heard a regular customer say that few things leave a deeper mark on a reader than the first book that finds its way into his heart. Those first images, the echo of words we think we have left behind, accompany us throughout our lives and sculpt a place in our memory to which, sooner or later-no matter how many books we read, how many worlds we discover, or how much we learn or forget- we will return.

Text
Eleven Magical Things about 2011.
1. Bicycle rides through summer wheat fields--falling in love with folk music.
2. Coffee and the wonderful conversations that surround it.
3. Visits from a dear friend- a relief from endless silence.
4. The apartment nest- an old soul with quirks which opened its 60s arms to us.
5. The tears and joy of lab work and jumping DNA.
6. Scrabble. On Thursdays with ice cream. In hotel rooms with cheesecake. In living rooms. In Spanish.
7. Hiking hills without a path. Exploring cayons and train tracks.
8. How many molecules are in a horse? Pondering the meaning of universes at 3 am.
9. Living rooms filled with books, paper and stressed college students banded together in solidarity.
10. Stargazing. Stargazing in old fields. Stargazing in parking lots. Stargazing near abandonded astronomy observatories. And trying to roast mashmellows with a lighter.
11. Baking. Baking in happiness. Baking in stress. Baking in saddness. Baking for birthdays. And sending cookie boxes to the corners of the country.
And as always, I am beyond thankful for the wonderful souls whom I share these experiences with.

There is an apartment just like ours. People just like us, half of them believe it will never work out. The other half believe in magic. It's like a war between them.
