THANK YOU!!! Queerness doesn't always have to be open. For one, the question "do I want to be WITH them or do I want to BE them" is a question many an LGBTQ+ person has asked themselves, because figuring our your sexuality/gender identity can be a long process sometimes. It's great that we're getting more open representations of sexualities/gender identities onscreen, but that doesn't mean homoerotic tension has to disappear. If anything, if you're questioning, it can be refreshing to see someone confused and figuring out who they are.

Personally, I don't think the problem with the sex scene in Oppenheimer was whether it was necessary or not. For me, I think it was a good illustration of how intoxicating hubris was to Oppenheimer; the fact that the "destroyer of worlds" passage was read as Oppenheimer resumed sex with Jean was pretty indicative that he didn't really see any problem with continuing a relationship with someone that needed him more than he needed her. In a way, it reflects his journey from prideful nuclear theorist who believes he knows best to someone who realized the error of his ways, albeit VERY too late.

But I feel like the problem with the sex scene is the direction. The camera focuses on the act itself, rather than how it makes the characters feel. There's a reason why a "female gaze" look at sex is so much more powerful than a "male gaze" interpretation of the act. With the male gaze, there's always the focus on the fact that you're having sex, but with the female gaze, you're focusing on why sex is so powerful; it can generate emotions within you that you hadn't really had pure access to before. With the Oppenheimer/Jean scene, there's no extreme close-ups of Jean's neck, or her hands on his bare chest, or the look in his eyes, or the look in her eyes. It's just...fornication. There is intimacy, but you have to look for it. And if you have to look for intimacy, then the sex scene falls flat.

Between Ryan Gosling Ken and Benoit Blanc I'm starting to think that it's some sort of animal abuse to keep casting big name actors in stoic macho manly man rolls instead of giving them goofy little guys to play. I rewatched the original Matrix trilogy this weekend and it only takes a moment to realize how bad movies would look if these execs got their way with AI replacing background actors.
