Downton Abbey secondary characters appreciation, part 2:

Albert the Hall Boy.

Just to clarify, we’re talking about this fine young man, played by Charlie Watson, who gets promoted to temporary Third Footman for the Royal visit in the first Downton movie:

An endlessly useful character especially inDownton fanfic from S5 onwards, whether you’re just looking for a name, or for a replacement for Andy after he’s married Daisy and become a pig farmer, post-movie, or for a baby gay for Thomas to mentor...

But I think there’s been some dispute in the fandom when exactly Albert joined the Downton staff. After carefully rewatching all the scenes with hall boys in S5 and taking endless screencaps for comparison and still harbouring doubts, I decided to simply ask the actor.

This is what came back:

So that’s official now, guys - Albert the Hall Boy is canon from Episode 5.1 onwards (or in terms of the timeline, February 1924). As some of you always knew. 🙂 (It also means Albert knew Jimmy, just in case that means anything.)
