Letting My Mind Wander As Waves Come to the Shores Along Indiana Dunes National Park

Letting My Mind Wander As Waves Come to the Shores Along Indiana Dunes National Park by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: Along the shores of Lake Michigan in Indiana Dunes National Park. This was more fo a leveled-on image captured from the lake shoreline to waves coming in and overcast skies. And yes, one seagull walking along the shoreline :-)

Far off are views of other snowcapped mountains in the more northern part of Death Valley and outside the national park.

A Trail Hiked the Day Prior (Pinnacles National Park)

A Trail Hiked the Day Prior (Pinnacles National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A setting looking to the northeast while taking in views across volcanic eroded formations present along the High Peaks in Pinnacles National Park. This was taking in view where the Juniper Canyon Loop meets with the High Peaks Trail, which I had hiked the day prior. My thought on composing this image was to keep more or less a balanced view with the ridge to my front and using a trail as a leading line to it.

Moon Rising Over Pyramid Peak. (Death Valley National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: At a roadside pullout location around the park entrance with a view looking to the east to some nearby mountains with the Moon rising in the skies above. I was drawn to both of the color patterns of the layers of rocks in the mountainside, as well as the simple beauty of watching the moon rise above it.

Snow had fallen, snow on snow (Joshua Tree National Park)

Snow had fallen, snow on snow (Joshua Tree National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While at a roadside pullout along the main park road with a view looking to the southeast across a snow covered open plain in Joshua Tree National Park. My thought on composing this image was to take advantage of that snow in the way it minimized colors, but also added shade and details across the plant-life present at this location. In the distance of the image, one can see a faint outline of Ryan Mountain. That much snow was falling that day! I felt including a portion of the mountainside, faint as it was, would help in adding a backdrop for the image captured. In the Bleak Midwinter, by Christina Rossetti

Bow Peak and Mount Andromache (Black & White, Banff National Park)

Bow Peak and Mount Andromache (Black & White, Banff National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: I took this image, I was mainly focusing on Bow Peak and the jagged mountains peaks off in the distance. When I later looked at the GPS coordinates and azimuth, I was able to determine that Bow Peak was the main mountain in the image center, but it is Mount Andromache off in the distance, which is on the other side of the highway and Icefields Parkway. Interesting trivia I noted working on the image later.

Center Crowfoot Mountain and other Peaks of the Wapta Icefield (Banff National Park)
flickr
Center Crowfoot Mountain and other Peaks of the Wapta Icefield (Banff National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While at a roadside pullout along the Icefields Parkway with a view looking to the west to Center Crowfoot Mountain. This is in Banff National Park. My thought on composing this image was to zoom in with the focal length to have the mountainside fill most of the image and a backdrop of blue skies to complete this setting in the Canadian Rockies. While there was a slight haze from the wildfires in Alberta mixed with the bright afternoon sunlight, I was able to bring out much of the details later, using the ClearView Plus tool in DxO PhotoLab 6. PeakVisor app on my iPhone identified the listing of Center Crowfoot Mountain.

Exploring the Arch Rock Nature Trail (Joshua Tree National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A setting looking to the southeast while taking in views across eroded rock formations present in this part of Joshua Tree National Park. This location is at the Arch Rock while walking the namesake nature trail. My thought on composing this image was to center the arch itself in the image center while pulling back little bit on the focal length to include some nearby formations and add to the setting.

Trees Guiding My Path Walked Along the Bristlecone Loop Trail (Bryce Canyon National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A setting looking to the south while taking in views of this bristlecone and evergreen forest along the Bristlecone Loop Trail in Bryce Canyon National Park. My thought on composing this image was to use a portrait orientation to take advantage of the tall trees to my front. The hiking trail would also be a leading line into the image. The blue skies above would be that color contrast to complement the earth-tones in the lower portion of the image and also highlight those tall trees caught in the glow of morning sunlight.

Petroglyph at the Pipe Shrine House (Mesa Verde National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While taking in views around the Far View Sites with the Pipe Shrine House. The setting is looking to the north-northwest at a nearby wall with a spiral pattern edged into stone and then a look beyond to other parts of this Ancestral Puebloan archaeological site. The other thing that drew me into this image was the layers present, which I attempted to emphasize by capturing a look above a nearby wall to other walls in the distance.

One Day in Yosemite National Park Just Isn’t Enough! (HDR) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A setting looking to the east-northeast while taking in views across the forested Yosemite Valley at Tunnel View in Yosemite National Park. I chose to work with Aurora HDR Pro to bring that complete setting in the image. I later exported a TIFF image to DxO PhotoLab 5 where I did some final adjustments with contrast, saturation and brightness for the final image.
