“History repeats itself”

We’ve all heard this phrase countless times, to refer to the ways humanity does not learn from the mistakes, crimes and tragedies of the past.

Now, seeing a genocide unfold in Palestine, another in Congo and in Sudan, while the whole world is watching, unable or unwilling to bring change, I can’t shake the feeling that this phrase is flawed.

History does not repeat itself. We repeat history. The passive language of history repeating itself, makes it seem as if we have no control over what happens, and thus no responsibility. That is simply not true. We have the responsibility, all of us as individuals, and most importantly as communities, to NOT REPEAT HISTORY. To learn from it. To grow from it.

Don’t let yourself be convinced that you have no control and so shouldn’t bother. Please bother. As much as you can.

Seeing a lot of people not from the uk not understanding who Larry the Cat is and his role in UK politics

Larry the Cat is no. 10’s official mouser. He lives at No. 10 and catches mice. He has held this position for over a decade

When shit is going down and all the news crews are hanging outside no. 10 waiting for something to happen he’s usually also hanging around outside so when there’s not much visual happening but they don’t want to cut away from the outside of No. 10 we all just watch Larry

He is often seen standing by the door waiting to be let in

He is the most competent person at No. 10

This is one of my fave tropes ngl

one of my very favorite obscure story tropes is when there’s an episode/plotline/tabletop campaign session where the conceit is ‘each member of the gang gets trapped in a specially tailored dream/nightmare/illusory mindscape and has to break out’

There was no coming out scene. The word gay was not uttered. No love confession. It was completely ambiguous. Based on what I saw, they're setting El and Mike up for an endgame. I skipped to their scenes, so I don't know if she said she loves him back. He said it to her as she was fighting Vecna. Will was in the room.

Netflix obviously couldn't alienate their homophobic audiences with a plot that made sense and would have been groundbreaking, especially on one of their absolute most popular shows, so they settled into convention.

Will seems to have a connection to Vecna still, and he tears up telling Mike he won't stop, they have to kill him, etc. close to the very end of the ninth episode.

I would say I'm upset, but I'm actually numb. It was like watching badly written hetero fanfiction, their scenes. I am not confident at all now, and I absolutely know for certain that Netflix made an intentional decision to bait their audiences. Especially if the writing keeps continuous to this, I have zero faith atp that, in one season, season 5, Mike and El will break up, Will will confess to Mike and have his feelings reciprocated, they have a coming out story, etc.

Mike and El are still together, and there was an "I love you." Will said nothing, to Mike or Jonathan, and nothing to develop their relationship further was done, really. Unless you count Will sobbing in secrecy, turning away from an oblivious Mike in the van scene, after using Mike's fear of losing El as projection for himself.

Mike being a dick to Will wasn't discussed or further explored or explained in any way, it seems. I just...

Will's sexuality has evidently been used to sideline him, in the most stereotypical way fashionable. This is why I stand by skipping through scenes, because I've learned for ten years as a shipper of onscreen same-sex relationships that this happens all the time. But this has to be one of the most insidious baits I've ever seen.

I will probably write more about this once my thoughts are better in order. Mike Wheeler, I know what you are... a one-dimensional cardboard cutout of a character tarnished by heteronormativity.
