After countless recommendations, I am finally reading The Book Thief.
Ten paragraphs in, it strikes me that Death (the narrator) has spent the entire time expounding upon the beauty of the sky, and how it’s not just a few colors as most assume, but an infinite gradient of hues from dawn until dusk

Percy Jackson but Hestia has a cabin. that is where the unclaimed go because she goddess of home and family. Demigods get claimed faster because when they show up Hestia glares at her siblings, nieces and nephews untill they claim them.

so real
My thoughts on episodes 1-2 of Percy Jackson. Extreme spoilers ahead.
Pjo show is out, it has been 84 years, I am extremely happy. Ok so first, I want to list all of the things I liked about the first two episodes, in order of appearance.
Percy saying basically line for line the intro from the books. I was shaking in my boots.
Percy and Grover, omg they're so cute. I really like how they're making Grover more of a real character and less of a comic relief character like he was in the first book. He's Percy's best friend fr.
MYTHOMAGIC CARDS?? IN SEASON ONE???
Nancy Bobofit is the perfect amount of Horrible.
Love how Mrs. Dodds was wearing an actual leather jacket, and the way her wing swooshed over her.
RICK CAMEO YESSS
Sally Jackson My Beloved. The way she was sitting out in the rain shes so beautiful omg.
DI ANGELOS???
The way Percy tapped her shoulder when they were at the cabin T^T they are the perfect mother and son I love them so much.
"Like… Jesus??"
The entire exchange between Grover and Percy when he entered the cabin. The sass is Spot On.
"I'm actually 24."
YOU ARE NOT BROKEN
"Hold fast. Brave the storm."
The entire Minotaur fight, holy shit. He looks so small compared to this huge monster and he's fighting so hard and WINNING.
I like that Grover didn't get knocked out halfway through the fight and had to be dragged into camp by Percy like in the books. I like the idea that he's going to go on the quest with Percy completely of his own choice, and not to "redeem" himself. And now Episode 2!
Love how huge the Minotaur horn is, It was so tiny in the movie I was always like "how did that thing kill it??"
Dionysus you massive troll holy shit.
Percy's sarcasm and deadpan stare when Chiron shows up in full Horse Mode.
The Hermes Cabin looks so cool and cozy!
The PAIN of knowing how things with Luke turn out when he's being so nice to Percy.
CLARISSE.
Percy being terrible at archery.
I don't know who the kid hanging out with Luke is but he's hilarious. The way Luke looked at him when he mentioned Oizys. Like 'we're trying to cheer him up dude wtf' Also, "they like the smell of begging."
The entire exchange between Percy and Annabeth after he becomes supreme lord of the bathroom. Leah's line delivery is Immaculate.
"She's my little sister." OH MY G O D. I AM SO NORMAL ABOUT THESE CHARACTERS.
The way Annabeth and Luke talk to each other before the game starts. Their sibling dynamic is everything. This is going to hurt so bad later.
Percy is a true child with ADHD when left alone in the woods. HE LOOKED SO HAPPY PETTING THAT LIZARD T^T
CLARISSE SPEAR
The way the Ares kids looked so confused when Percy started winning the fight??? I was WHEEZING
The way Annabeth pushed him into the water knowing what would happen. I love how they're making her intelligence from Athena feel like a real demigod power. She's sherlocking the holmes out of this shit.
THE FULL TRIDENT ABOVE PERCY I WAS S C REAM ING.
The way all the other demigods are looking at Percy confused/scared shitless??
"I am Sally Jackson's son!"
Grover you are so amazing we love you sweetie.
He just wants his mom back he doesn't want to be a pawn in a godly war T^T
Ok now for the things I didn't like so much/things they left out/changed.
Yancy not being established as a 'school for troubled kids' It makes Percy's line "am I a troubled kid? Yeah, you could say that." Seem weirdly out of nowhere.
The "fight" with Mrs. Dodds lasting about 5 seconds.
The fact that Chiron completely Gives Percy Riptide despite not knowing his godly parent for sure yet.
The conversation with Chiron after Percy gets expelled kind of fell flat and didn't hit as hard as it did in the books. They seem to be having Percy not actually have a diagnosis of ADHD and Dyslexia yet and he's just now trying to talk to his mom about it? But in the books it was this gut wrenching scene where the one teacher Percy looked up to basically told him he was going to fail eventually and that he needs to try harder.
The absolutely pathetic portrayal of Gabe. As someone who grew up with abusive relatives, and who really related to Percy's struggles growing up, I feel pretty annoyed that they severely watered down his oppressive and abusive presence in Percy and Sally's lives. The blue food thing came from Sally subtly sticking up to Gabe, wanting something that was only hers and Percy's, that he couldn't control.
The pacing in general is whiplash inducing. The first book is basically half set up, half quest. We get to understand Percy's struggles, his life in New York, his background of being a "delinquent", then we get to CHB and he has more set up, time to process his mother's "death" and the fact that he wants nothing to do with the gods or his dad, he just wants to get her back from Hades, (whether he knows she survived or not). And once we have had time to get to know the characters, we get to the quest. In the show, it feels like I'm being dragged from scene to scene with little to no time to process the events of the last one. we barely had time to get to know Annabeth as a character beyond Luke's description of her and her few scenes, (which were amazing). When Percy gets claimed, it cuts almost immediately to scenes of him putting his stuff in the Poseidon cabin, to him getting told he has to go on a quest now. Tldr: The first two episodes, pacing wise, felt like a really long trailer to get the set up for the quest done and out of the way.
Lazy costume design(?)The beaded necklaces (?) In the books, the clay beads on the necklaces are basically your prize for making it though the year. You get one for each year you survive at camp, and they're painted with the most significant event of the year. I'm still not sure about this one because there might be more development of this in later episodes to clear up why this is the way it is, but from what I've seen, almost every camper in the background shots of CHB all have five beads on their camp necklaces. Clarisse, the two other Ares kids with her, all of the Apollo kids in the archery scene, the Hermes kids hanging around Luke, etc. And as far as I can tell, the only ones who had actual symbols painted on them and not just solid colored beads were Luke and Annabeth. (Also Annabeth doesn't have her dad's ring on hers? Yet??) Even the younger looking campers had five beads which doesn't make sense unless they were collected and brought to camp from kindergarten. I just feel like there should be a little more attention to detail?
They seem to have gotten rid of most of the foreshadowing? The hellhound, the lighting striking the car, the field trip to Olympus foreshadowing one of the campers being the thief, the increasingly bad weather indicating fights between the gods, etc. The whole reason they suspect Hades in the book was because Mrs. Dodds was a fury, and a hellhound being one of Hades' monsters was summoned to camp. In the show they seem to just be going off of who might gain something from a war.
The changes made to Percy's claiming by Poseidon. First of all the line "It is Determined. Poseidon, Earthshaker, Stormbringer, Father of Horses. Hail, Perseus Jackson, Son of the Sea God. " Goes so hard, and I have no idea why they would change it. Second of all the fearful reverence was just not there. All the demigods looking on were like. "Huh, so his dad's Poseidon." This was my favorite scene in the books and I'm really sad they changed it to just be generally lamer?
Also where is the Nectar and Ambrosia? I do hope they show it later on in the show because child me was obsessed with wanting to try some and the books made it seem so cool.
They have yet to mention the Camp Store or the orientation film.
Anyway this is super disorganized and ramble-y, but I had to put my thoughts somewhere. I can't wait to see the rest of the show!
