Okay I love Tyler. I absolutely adore this little shit. And he does something, or rather through him the writers do something, that I have an intense amount of appreciation for.

Look, in a lot of ways I was him. I was that boy who watched girl shows, who rejoiced at the opportunity to play with dolls I was afraid to ask for directly, who watched the barbie movies whenever they were on, who’s favorite show in kindergarten was the powerpuff girls, who at least at that same time only hung out with girls and who might not have been into boybands, but looking back knows that it’s only because I never found a way to get into them. And I think that is a lot of us. And they made Tyler for us. Because they saw us. They made a boy who’s into the girl stuff, but who’s secretive and repressed about it, who’s highly queercoded and gets accepted as one of the girls. And they made him in what is by all accounts a movie for girls. (Not as in a target demographic that consists of girls, but a movie that was written for young girls who can use something like this in their lives.) Because they know we are here, too, and that girl media is enjoyed by boys, too. And that boys like me will connect to this movie, too, because girl media always gave us things that boy media couldn’t and that we latched onto.

I’m just really fucking grateful for that. Because I feel seen in a way that nothing else quite captured before. And the way he is immediately welcomed into the in group as soon as they find out why he is the way he is, feels like a warm hug directed at people like me. They didn’t have to do this. He could have stayed a little shithead for the entire movie. But they did. And I appreciate it. I appreciate that he is welcomed as one of them. And that the movie communicates that everyone who is like me, is also welcomed as one of them.
