✨THE STORY

To some people, cooking is a ritual to connect with their roots. To others, cooking opens the door to a different culture. To me, cooking is a way to share joy and love. It’s part of my identity that stays consistent amid all changes in my life. Different places, same dishes. The smell of soy sauce and vinegar opens a sensory tunnel leading to where I came from. The sound of the spatula hitting the iron wok brings me back to that small kitchen where I saw the hunchback of my grandma. I always wanted to weave this warm memory of Chinese cooking into my creation, making it tangible so that I can carry it with me when I travel and share it with others. That’s why I created an apron printed with Chinese sauces and a tea towel filled with commonly used kitchenware.

An everyday example of passing from one stereotype to another: a female Ph.D must be dull, boring and unsuitable for marriage, while a good-looking woman is probably superficial, empty inside, and rely on her appearance to acquire a leading role. The good news is an increasing number women are breaking these stereotypes with their stories and actions. Happy Women’s Day! 🙌

P.S. In Chinese, the expression “花瓶”(vase) is used as a derogatory term to describe women who are good-looking but unintelligent.

Today is the 15th day of the Spring Festival, also known as 元宵节—the Lantern Festival. On this day, it’s a tradition to eat tangyuan ”汤圆“ (Southern China) or yuanxiao ”元宵” (Northern China), which is a glutinous rice ball with sweet fillings, such as red bean paste, sesame paste, or peanut butter. I also think it’s a perfect occasion to learn the Chinese expression 露馅(lòu xiàn), which means "revealing the filling/stuffing". Every year, I design a new print to celebrate the Chinese New Year. This year, I picked the Chinese expression “蒸蒸日上”, which means thriving or flourishing in life and work. The four characters literally mean “steam steam day up”. Every time I see this word, I see an image of hot steam coming out from a bamboo steamer full of baos, warm and lively. I hope it keeps your spirit up in difficult times! ✨
