December
28, Tokyo, Japan
Internationally beloved “kawaii” character GLOOMY BEAR will make
his animated debut with a new TV series set to air in Japan in April 2021.
A new bilingual promotional video announcing GLOOMY BEAR has been
released to YouTube featuring new dialogue and visuals.
Veteran actor Koichi
Yamadera (the voice of Spike Spiegel in the Cowboy Bebop
anime) has been cast in the lead role of GLOOMY, while Natsuki Hanae (the voice
of Tanjiro Kamado in the smash-hit anime series Demon Slayer) has been
cast as GLOOMY’s young owner PITY.
Originally created by
Osaka-based artist Mori Chack, GLOOMY BEAR first debuted as a character in
2000. The appeal of GLOOMY and PITY’s unusual relationship – full of cuteness,
violence, and surprising emotional depth – led to a wave of GLOOMY merchandise
and high-profile collaborations in Japan. Eventually, GLOOMY would win devoted
fans all over the world as well.
In addition to the anime series announcement video, there is also
an additional promotional clip focusing on GLOOMYs creator Mori Chack and the

20471120 Space-Time three piece suit from the Japanese brand’s 1996-1997 Autumn/Winter collection. Set includes a jacket with a large 3D pocket at the left front, pants, and a 3D apron skirt.
According to the Kyoto Costume Institute, which owns a similar two piece version of the suit, “In the mid-1990s, high performance gaming machines like Playstation and consumer-oriented operating systems, especially Windows 95, became generally available, and ordinary individuals started to use digital technology such as CG and the Internet. Nakagawa and Lica had a keen sense of the changes going on at that time, and used CG to design the patterns for this suit, ensuring that the woven pattern faithfully reproduced even irregular breaks in the lines.”

Japanese fashion personalities on Twitter are postingtributes to Matsumura Naoki, the chief editor of legendary Japanese subculture fashion magazine Kera, who passed away suddenly earlier this month.
Matsumura’s influence on the Harajuku subculture street fashion scene, going back to the 1990s, has been immeasurable. As the chief editor of both Kera Magazine and Gothic&Lolita Bible (as well as working on several post-Kera lolita magazines), he was arguably the world’s top evangelist of Lolita fashion.
Rest In Peace Matsumura Naoki, thank you for everything. Harajuku would not be what it is today without your influence.
