it's really late and i should go to sleep but
they put him in the ship. he's spent years learning how to fly it, but holding the controls makes him nervous. seeing blue become black takes his breath away, and the little shimmers make sure he'll never be the same again.
he reaches the rock everyone sees every night, the same rock that controls the waves of salt and water, and he is also made of salt and water so he's drawn to it as well. he lands, like a feather on the place of dreams.
he puts on his suit, and hears a knock on the window.
a young girl, with no space suit. wings sprouting from her back, shining like nothing he's ever seen. her voice is soothing, and comes through like she's speaking into his mind.
"hello, can you help me? i'm a bit lost."
he walks out, slowly bouncing as the moon struggles to hold him there, and she shyly waves.
"i've been here for quite a while, and i just don't know how to get home."
"where's home?" he asks.
she doesn't know that either. she does know him, his name, his family name, how many freckles he has under the visor and how many many his heart has pumped blood.
"i think your home might be very far away."
"maybe we could try finding it on a map?"
his map isn't quite useful, it only stretches to the solar system and the closest stars, and she knows she's been flying for quite a while and home is at least a moon's worth of maps away.
"well," he says, "if you don't have anywhere to go, you can come back with me."
"you seem nervous saying that. do you think i'll find a home there?"
they both look above the map and at the marble.
"i don't know. people sent me here to see how far we could go. where we could build a new home. ours is breaking. we haven't taken good care of it or ourselves."
she nods carefully. "that's okay. some homes are different. what matters is that even with all that, they still took enough care to reach for something new, and to make sure you got here safely."
"that is true," the astronaut remarks. "sometimes we do know how to work together."
the angel smiles.
"it does seem like a pretty far journey. but i'm glad i won't do it alone."
a few days later, the boy in the rocket ship floated in the middle of nowhere, heading home, with the girl with wings next to him.

The goddess Hera is jealous. (Or at least described as such. I think it’s pretty reasonable to be annoyed that your husband keeps chasing after everything under the sun, even if she punishes the wrong people for it.) Hera the AI doesn’t have a lot of opportunities to be jealous, but she’s insecure, dislikes being left out, and is resentful of the others’ ability to leave her behind, so I think she’d be a natural. My brother is the family cat’s favorite, and the first time he came home from college with his partner our cat was furious and sulked in front of the door every time they were in a room together. I can see Hera reacting similarly. Dominik is trying to catch up with his wife while a powerful superintelligence broods overhead about it. She tells him not to worry about it but he’s kind of intimidated.
