Russian forces surged into Ukraine in the early hours of Thursday, shocking the globe.
War is expensive to start, but it is even more expensive to stop. Severe economic sanctions are warranted in the case of a rebellion against the current world order. The most dangerous option is to exclude Russia from the SWIFT system.
Today, we'll look at what this system is and what it may mean if Russia had to leave it.

The Pros and Cons of Adding ATF to the GST Regime
The Union Government has reiterated its support for a key demand of the aviation industry - the inclusion of aviation turbine fuel (ATF) under the GST regime.
Reasons given include the soaring global crude oil prices and the beleaguered aviation sector, which is still struggling to resurface to pre-pandemic levels of growth.
Off the top, the proposition to include ATF within GST’s ambit seems like a slam dunk. It enjoys broad support across GoI ministries and all that stands in its way is the GST Council’s assent.
Look closer, though, and complications emerge…

India State of Forest Report 2021: What to Believe and What Not To
The grass is always green in India (allegedly).
The latest India State of Forest Report (ISFR) is out.
The headline figure is "forest cover" which, according to the ISFR, has been steadily climbing over the years. The full picture, however, is not as green.
GoI’s forest folly can be broadly classified under four headings: (1) how it defines “forests”, (2) how it classifies forests, (3) the unrestrained revisions, and (4) the very accuracy of its forest data.

Why are Coffee Prices Soaring Worldwide? What's the Outlook for Indian Coffee Stocks?
The global coffee market continues to be in a state of constant flux.
Last year, COVID-19 and the supply chain crisis drove coffee prices to multi-year highs and threatened acute shortages. This trend has spilled over into the new year, with prices rallying across markets.
Coupled with the remaking of supply chains that is currently underway, these factors are giving a fillip to coffee stocks in India, with expectations rising that the country may succeed in filling the Brazil-sized void that seems to be up for grabs.
The full picture, however, is a little more complicated…

Vodafone Idea Rescued By the Government - Here's What it Means
The Government of India recently went shopping in the telecom sector.
Beginning with the acquisition of a 35.8% equity stake in Vodafone Idea, it went on to pick another 9.5% stake in Tata Teleservices, a Tata Group company.
Strictly speaking, these acquisitions weren't "shopping" but rather "payments" for the statutory dues owed by these companies - a “debt to equity” swap of sorts.
How is this going to benefit the companies, the Government and most importantly, the telecom sector at large?

Alphabet vs CCI: Inside Google's Challenges in India
Another day, another investigation into Google.
Last week, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) opened a new front in its scrutiny of Big Tech's business practices in the world’s second-largest digital economy.
Acting on complaints received from news publishers, the regulator ordered an inquiry into Google's "abuse of dominance" in the digital news aggregation segment.
Indian regulators’ grievances against Google are similar to their peers’ in the EU and US. They primarily revolve around (1) the company’s Play Store policies, (2) Android OS dominance, and (3) Search dominance.
Here's all you need to know about Alphabet's trysts with CCI:

Why the James Webb Space Telescope Matters
A telescope for all time!
Omicron cases aren’t the only thing that have shot up to the sky of late…
25 years in development, repeated delays, ballooning budgets, and sky-high expectations: On December 25th, the James Webb Space Telescope was finally launched from Earth to its orbit, a million miles away, which it will reach in about 29 days.
The scientific community is all agog in excitement. This proverbial Christmas miracle is comparable to the detection of gravitational waves in 2016 (H/T Albert Einstein) or the black hole "photograph" two years ago.
Only this time, the cause for celebration isn't a discovery per se, but rather the anticipation that more momentous discoveries are on the horizon.
