how did you learn to draw? do you have any tips? 💗

apologies for the delayed response, but i kind of had to think about this one a bit!

it's difficult to for me to say how i "learned" to draw. i've just been doing it for basically my whole life. i'm an only child, so drawing was an activity i could do by myself without bothering anyone. i spent so, so many hours of my childhood alone in my room drawing and drawing and drawing. now it’s become something that helps me with mental wellness and is almost like meditation to me.

so i guess my answer is: practice.

i did eventually take exactly 1 (one) semester at an art school, but decided very quickly it wasn't the career for me. i'm here for a good time, not a financially viable time.

kind of hard for me to give tips, because everyone's experience, expectations, and goals are unique. also i have no industry experience and any tips would relate only to my experiences drawing solely as a hobby. so for me the most important tip is to have fun. if i'm not having fun, what am i even doing?

but also i’ve found that part of the enjoyment i derive from drawing comes from constantly challenging myself to improve my skills and to better execute ideas in my head.

so, because you asked, here is some very general advice which i have found to be useful but to which i often struggle to adhere:

practice a lot - everyone is always saying this because it's true.

practice efficiently - devote time to focused studies. study form and shape. work in greyscale. use references. i know “do your homework" is boring advice, and you may want to produce a bunch of completed illustrations, but you'll improve faster if you devote time to studying the fundamentals.

but...

know when you're finished - its tempting to work and re-work and re-re-work, but this can slow you down. do your studies, learn your lessons, and move on to the next thing.

don't worry too much about your "style" - i think maybe sometimes people get too focused on developing a characteristic style. you have a unique personal style inherent to your work whether you realize it or not. but it can be easy to hide bad habits behind the excuse of personal style. focus on expanding your knowledge and honing your skills, and your style will emerge naturally.

so yeah? that’s just some general advice i try to keep in mind myself. hopefully it doesn’t sound too self-important! 😅😅😅
