in all the time you had known natasha romanoff, the one and only thing you were sure of was that there was no one like her. and it wasn’t because of how beautiful she was, and she was goddamn breathtaking, it wasn’t because she was skilled in a way no person was, or because she seemed to always know everyone’s secrets; no, that wasn’t it, the public natasha, the one everyone knew, respected and feared. it could’ve been that version of her, because that natasha was amazing, but private nat, as you called her, was, simply, out of this world.
it all started as every problem does, with someone’s devilish smile. and lord, does she have the most tempting smile ever. it was simple after that, you became close, best friends, until the friendly hugs became more… intimate. until the friendly cheek kisses became full on make out sessions. it was easy with natasha, everything flowed perfectly. she knew you, and despite the last thing she said to you, you knew her.
i washed my hands of us at the club
you made a mess of me
i pictured you with other girls in love
then threw up on the street
it was a monday when natasha romanoff decided that she no longer wanted you. she had been acting strange and distant and it all seemed to click for her when that morning you decided to bake her some cupcakes. it might have seem silly to someone else, but that was your way of telling her that you loved her, given that your first kiss had been while baking some cupcakes for steve’s birthday last year. this time though, it was her birthday.
she had been training with bucky in the compound's gym and she entered the kitchen sweaty with a reddened face.
“nat!” you called her as you pulled the sweet goods out of the oven and glanced at her over your shoulder.
“hey…” she looked around, almost as if looking for an escape. but you were too naive, too stupid to realize it, so you kept going.
“happy birthday!” you turned around with the tray in your hands. her eyes fell on the cupcakes and for the first time since you knew her, you wished she wouldn't even direct her gaze at you. the look on her face made your stomach twist. the realization that crossed her features at your gesture, the furrow of her brows as she took it in, and, finally, the disgust at the thought of loving you too. in the two seconds all of this passed, you kept smiling like an idiot, hoping, hoping, hoping.
“y/n,” she simply said and your smile fell immediately.
“yeah…?”
“what is this?”
“cupcakes?” you said, more a question than a statement. almost as if you weren't sure. she took in a sharp breath through her nose, still looking at you. “i wanted to do something nice for you, and i know you don't particularly care about birthdays but i thought-”
“no.” she cut your rambling off, shaking her head. “this is- this is not just cupcakes. and you know that.” you frowned.
“then what is it?”
“its-”
“what?” you asked again, defensively. she was hurting you. she ignored you and distanced herself from you, and then she ruined your nice gesture with more distance. “what is it natasha?”
she looked taken aback by your use of her full name, being used to you calling her a soft nickname. then she composed herself, looking at you coldly.
“you can't do this.” she told you.
“do what?”
“don't play dumb.” she clenched her jaw. “you can't pretend that everything is fine. you know how i've been acting, you know i've been trying-”
“you wanna break up with me?” you asked her, unwavering, putting up a strong front. she swallowed.
“yes.” she admitted.
“why?” natasha sighed, frustration lacing her sigh, almost as if she couldn't tell she was breaking your heart in a million pieces right then and there.
“i can't- i never meant for it to get this far.”
“you didn't mean to what? to lead me on?” you asked her but her gaze was on the ground. “look at me and answer the question!” you raised your voice.
“yes!” she widened her eyes at her admission, surprised by her tone. natasha ran her hand over her reddened face. “yes.” she said softly. “yes… i didnt mean for it to get this far. i didn't mean for you to…”
you nodded rapidly, repeatedly, almost mockingly. then you let out an incredulous laugh.
“you didn't mean for me…?” you trailed off, waiting for her to finish her statement.
“for you to make me cupcakes! for you to… to…” she didn't finish her sentence. for you to fall in love with me.
“you didn't mean for that to happen? then why did you let it?” she didn't answer. “why?!”
“you are hard to push away.” she might as well have grabbed a knife and stabbed you with it, to proceed then to twist it, repeatedly. the air was knocked out of you. what could you say to that? all those months you thought you were living a real life love story, a story worth telling the world, she was trying to get out of it but couldn't find a way to do so. that broke your heart. and it made you feel so stupid, it was blinding how embarrassing it was. defeated, you frowned and took a good, long look at her, pretending that was the last time you were going to see her. and truthfully, it was. that was the last time you were going to see nat, your love. so that's why you did the next thing.
they say that if it's right, you know
“fine.” you dropped the tray and walked away quickly as the sound of the metal hitting the marbled floor resounded all the way to the end of the hallway.
each bar plays our song
nothing has ever felt so wrong
she's everywhere. she haunts your dreams, and when you're awake, she haunts every place in the compound. she's not there physically– she has been avoiding you ever since she broke your heart– but her perfume, her laugh, her presence, they're all there. you're sick of it, sick of her memory, sick of your shattered heart. which is why you call her.
oh my, love is a lie
shit my friends say to get me by
it hits different
it hits different this time
“i can't believe it, i'm gonna kill her.” wanda tells you when you finish your story. she is sitting next to you on a booth in a beautiful bar, far away from the compound. if only you would be able to appreciate the beauty.
“you don't have to, wands. it's fine.”
“oh yeah, it's so fine that you asked me to go to a bar! miss introvert!” she scoffs. “what an asshole. i'm going to knock some sense into her.” you fidget with the straw of your drink.
“there is no sense to be knocked into her. it's simple. she doesn't love me back.” even though you say it nonchalantly, it suddenly feels like someone very heavy is sitting on your chest. your eyes begin to gather some tears, but you blink them away. wanda notices. of course she does.
“hey. lets go dance. fuck her.” you nod and she grabs your hand and pulls you to the dance floor. before you leave the table, you grab your drink, feeling like you're gonna need it.
...
“wanda! look!” you do a weird dance move and the redhead laughs, doing one herself. it's been a while since she dragged you to the dance floor, and you've had more than a couple of drinks, so you're, to put it elegantly, hammered.
“i'm going to get another beer!” she yells over the music, and you nod, not paying much attention. you're having too much fun, dancing weirdly and forgetting your pain.
not a lot of time passes when you suddenly feel a hand on your shoulder. you turn around, expecting to find wanda, but instead, there is a woman. a beautiful woman.
“hey there.” she's looking at you amused, and for a second you think she's going to laugh at your dancing. “i've been watching you and your friend for a while. you seem to be having a lot of fun. mind if i join you?”
oh. oh. well, hell yeah.
she laughs and you realize you just said the last part out loud. you scrunch up your nose.
“sorry, had too much to drink. i'm not going to have a filter now.” she tilts her head back as she laughs, and you notice she has dimples. “pretty smile.” you tell her as you point at her. “sorry.”
“don't worry.” she puts her hand on your arm. “thank you. so, are we going to dance?”
“yeah!” you nod enthusiastically and begin moving again, swaying your body from one side to the other.
you're taken aback when she puts her hands on your hips and draws herself closer. maybe this is exactly what you need. so you hook your arms around her neck and begin dancing more suggestively. she smirks and pulls you even closer, your breaths mingling. she smells like vanilla and you close your eyes, preparing yourself. then, she kisses you.
her mouth is on yours, and she smells like vanilla and tastes like cherries and she's beautiful and seems kind…
but she's not nat.
you stop moving your mouth and she pulls away frowning. god, you miss her.
you don't realize until a few moments later that she's saying something.
“are you okay?”
“what?” and that's when you feel them. hot tears are streaming down your face. she looks worried, but also uncomfortable. poor woman, she wasn't expecting to be a therapist today. “sorry. i'm so so sorry.”
“hey, its okay. what happened?”
“i broke up with my girlfriend last week.” you chuckle bitterly through your tears. “she broke up with me.” understanding crosses her features. “i'm sorry.” you repeat again, sniffling.
“i'm going to go get your friend, okay?”
you nod and suddenly, the world is spinning. you didn't realize how drunk you were. she puts her hands on your waist to stabilize you and you let out a sob. this is such a mess. you're so embarrassed. and you miss nat. you just want to go home and crawl into her bed and let her kiss away all your tears and hug away your pain. but you can't. because she doesn't love you.
“i'll be right back.” and then she's gone. you look at her as she walks away, still crying.
it isn't long before wanda is by your side, with the woman still there. you're surprised she hasn't run away yet.
“babe! are you okay?” you shake your head, and she wipes your tears with her thumbs. “thank you, i'll take it from here.” she tells the woman, whose name you don't know.
“what's your name?” you ask her, sniffling.
“violet.” she smiles, pity dripping from her expression.
“thank you, violet. and i'm sorry. you're so beautiful, i'm just-”
“i know. it's alright.” she tells you. “and for the record, she's an idiot. you're the most breathtaking woman i've ever seen.” you purse your lips and look down, embarrassed.
“thank you,” you mumble.
“see you around.” and then, she's gone.
“let's go get a cab.” wanda tells you, putting her arm around your waist so you don't fall. she doesn't seem drunk, unlike you. but, to be fair, you didn't really pay a lot of attention to how much she drank.
“yeah.” you nod.
and i never don't cry (no, i never don't cry) at the bar
yeah, my sadness is contagious (my sadness is contagious)
i slur your name 'til someone puts me in a car
i stopped receiving invitations
you walk out of the bar and get into a cab. you're still crying, silently. and you're tired. and you're starting to get angry. so you grab your phone. the line stops ringing, and you know she can hear you breathe.
“idiot.” you tell her. she doesn't answer. she doesn't hang up either.
“y/n, put down the phone.” wanda tells you once she realizes what you're doing. but you get away from her.
“you're an idiot, you know that natasha? that's what violet thinks. i'm breathtaking apparently.” you sniffle. “but you couldn't see that. i deserve more than that, more than you.”
“y/n,” she says sternly. “where are you?”
“what do you care?”
“i'll come pick you up, just give me the address-”
“i'm in a cab with wanda. and no, you can't pick me up.” you hiccup. your friend looks at you. “god, natasha. youre so… so…” wanda shakes her head. you look down at your hands.
“so what?” she asks you in a low voice, almost as if expecting the worst thing to come out of your mouth.
“i'm sorry.” you blurt out. “i'm sorry i'm so hard to push away.”
“y/n-”
“and im sorry i fell in love with you.” she falls silent. you sob silently. “goodbye.” and you hang up.
“i don't know what im gonna do without her.” you tell wanda.
“you'll be okay, y/n. you'll find someone wonderful who can give you what you deserve.”
“yeah…” you wipe your tears with your hand and look out the window. you don't tell wanda that you don't want to find anyone else, that if it's not natasha, then it's you, alone.
movin' on was always easy for me to do
it hits different
it hits different 'cause it's you
the next morning, you wake up with a splitting headache and you moan and grunt and thrash around your bed. after complaining for a bit, your mind is filled with images of last night. wanda and you talking, dancing. violet. violet dancing with you, then… kissing you. crying. calling natasha. wait. calling natasha? oh no.
“fuck. me.”
slowly, painstakingly slowly, you get out of bed, put on your socks, and head to the compound's kitchen.
when you reach it, you don't expect to find wanda and natasha sitting there, but you do.
as soon as you enter, wanda looks at natasha pointedly, then at you, and then leaves without a word.
you nod at natasha as a greeting and go to open the fridge, but she's quick and blocks the door. you blink at her. you weren't expecting to find her there, and you were not, in a million years, expecting her to give you the time of day.
“we need to talk.” you sigh. there's a few inches between you two but you can still smell her perfume. and it's killing you.
“if it's about the call, i'm sorry, okay? forget about it. just- pretend it didn't happen.” she looks at you.
“i can't.” you take a deep breath.
“i don't know what else to say. i'm sorry.”
“could you stop saying sorry for a second?” she snaps. you frown. “i'm sorry, y/n. i am.”
“for what, nat?” you sigh. “it's not your fault you don't love me.”
“that's the thing.” she runs her hands over her face.
“what is?”
“i do love you, y/n.” the world stops for a few seconds, but then you clench your jaw and shake your head.
“is this because of violet?” she looks away. “you're jealous i'm trying to move on and so you manipulate me?”
“no, it's not like that.” you scoff.
“please.”
“okay.” she nods. “i'm not going to pretend i care for you kissing another woman. i dont. i wanted to go over there and punch her.” against your will, butterflies swarm your stomach at her admission. “but- but that's not it.”
“then what is it?”
“i realized- i've known i love you for a long time, y/n. but i'm- i'm no good for you.” you frown.
“what?”
“you deserve more than someone who freaks out because you told them you love them. you deserve-”
“let me stop you right there.” you cut her off. she blinks, looking at you scared. but you give her a soft, small smile. “you love me?”
“yes. so much.”
“but you freaked out because you think you don't deserve me.”
“yes.”
“and you lied to me. you told me you didn't feel the same.” she looks guilty.
“yes, but-”
“no, no. let me finish.” you take a deep breath. “violet was right.” she clenches her jaw at the mention of her name. “you are an idiot.” she frowns.
“um-”
“you're an idiot, natasha romanoff. but i can't live without you. and i don't ever want to.” her eyes soften, and fill with hope.
“you're saying that you- that you forgive me?”
“you really hurt me nat. but i should've known you'd do something like that. you're not the best at this feelings stuff.” she smiles sheepishly.
“i'm not. but i want to be, for you.”
“i know. and i trust you'll be. after all, you did just admit that you love me.”
“yeah,” she chuckles, “it just took me breaking your heart.” you tilt your head. even though she's joking, you know there's guilt there.
“hey,” you caress her cheek. “its okay.” she's looking at the floor now. “baby. it's okay, i promise.”
“i'm really sorry. i promise you, i'll never do something like that ever again.”
“i know,” you whisper, “now, are you going to kiss me or what?” she laughs and it twists your stomach into knots. god, you missed her.
she grabs your face between her hands and puts her mouth on yours. the kiss begins soft, but after a bit it becomes desperate.
“i missed you so much.” she says when she pulls away for air. then, she's back attacking your mouth.
“i love you.” you tell her, and you kiss her again, and again.
“i love you too.”
yeah, there was no one like her.

MASTERLIST OF THE STORY
Chapter 57: Endgame.
“Alright, it's time. Bring them back.” Steve told Bruce. It had been two minutes and a half since they killed Loki and Y/N and they were getting impatient.
Bruce nodded and signaled for Natasha to grab the defibrillator to shock Y/N as he prepared himself to shock Loki.
“Alright, on three Nat.” He said and the redhead nodded and looked at her friends limp body, frowning in concentration. “One, two, three!”
Suddenly, a gasping Y/N and Loki jumped quickly into a sitting position.
“Are you guys okay?!” Bruce asked them both, frantic, as he was trying to check both their vitals at the same time.
They both looked at each other and nodded.
“We are okay.” She told him, calming her breathing.
That's when she felt something materializing in her hand. She looked down and found the dagger of death, with some runes carved into it that weren't there before.
“You got it.” Loki told her.
“I did.” She laughed incredulously. Then she remembered how she got it and frowned unnoticed by the team, except for Loki, who noticed it and looked at her with question in his eyes. A second later, she sobered up. “Alright guys, the whole dying thing has me quite tired. Could we go to get some rest?”
“Y-yeah.” Steve answered her. “Of course.”
“Are you sure you're okay?” Natasha asked her again, unsure.
“Yeah, I'm fine. Just really tired.”
“Alright, go rest guys. We will take care of the dagger.”
They both nodded and got up from the beds to head to their room.
“Y/N,” Loki began as soon as she closed the door to their shared quarters.
“Yeah?” She wasn't looking at him and that's what made him sure that something was wrong.
“What was her condition?” He asked knowingly.
Y/N took in a sharp breath.
“Sigyn's soul.” He lifted his chin and nodded.
She went to the end of the bed and sat down, looking at the floor.
“Am I a terrible person Loki?”
“You are not, my love.”
“But I… I agreed because in a way I want her to suffer. How can you justify that?”
“Y/N,” he grabbed her hand, “she killed your family. She then proceeded to lie to you and infiltrate this new family that you found with the intention of killing you and eventually ruling over the universe with a position that is yours to have.” She chuckled breathily.
“When you put it like that…”
“Y/N…”
“It just hurts, you know? When I stop to think about it, it hurts. And I don't want to hurt her, not really, past my rage, I'm just hurt… But I… I need to hurt her to end this.”
“I know, darling. I know.” He said as he wrapped his arms around her shoulders and pulled her into his chest. “You are the last person who should go through this.”
“Yet here we are.”
“Here we are.” He agreed.
“I love you Loki. And I'm really scared.”
“I love you too.” He told her and then breathed in deeply. “And everything will be alright. I promise you.”
--------------------------
“Y/N, wake up!”
“Loki? What-” She was cut off by a loud explosion echoing a few floors down.
“She's here.” She widened her eyes.
“F.R.I.D.A.Y where is the team?”
“The garden miss.”
She got up from the bed and began running with him towards the rest of the team.
When they both reached them she saw the scene that was unfolding with a knot in her stomach. Sigyn was there with her whole army of enhanced soldiers, smiling wickedly as she looked at Y/N.
“Steve! The dagger!” She told him.
Captain America looked at her and shook his head.
“What?” She whispered.
“You mean this dagger?” Sigyn's voice answered for him. She looked at her and found the dagger in her hands. “You were really going to kill me, little sister? That is harsh.”
Y/N clenched her teeth and put herself in a defensive stance, prepared for a fight. The goddess laughed loudly.
“You really think you stand a chance without this?”
“I guess we'll have to find out.”
“Very well, whatever you wish.” She signaled for her army to prepare themselves and soon enough, the garden was a battlefield.
“We can't win this fight! We need a plan, Cap.” Clint said in his earpiece.
“I'm thinking!” He responded as he was trying to catch his breath in between throwing his shield around and knocking out a few of them, only for them to get back up again.
“This is like fighting an army of Y/Ns and Wandas, how the hell are we going to do this?” Sam asked, worried.
Meanwhile, Y/N was looking at Sigyn, flying over them and smiling maliciously, knowing that she was winning.
“The mind flayer.” Y/N whispered with wide eyes.
“What?” Clint asked.
“They all have…” She grunted.
“Y/N!” Steve shouted. “Y/N!”
“I'm… fine.” She said as she got up from the floor after getting hit as Loki helped her. “They all have a part of her power. It's like a hive mind. We need to kill the mind that has control.”
“How are we gonna do that when she has the only weapon that can kill her?”
“Make sure you're distracting her army… and let me handle her.”
“Y/N, no!”
“Please Tony, this is my fight.”
“No, it's ours.” He told her. “Go, we'll keep them occupied.”
She smiled softly.
“Darling,” she looked at him expecting resistance but was met with a soft look. “Be careful. I love you.”
“I will. I love you too.”
And just like that, she was flying over every one of them, heading towards her sister.
“I thought you were smarter than this.”
“Yeah well, you overestimated me.” Sigyn smirked. Then she prepared her hands for combat and Y/N did the same.
Blasting her magic towards the goddess, she grunted when she missed and was in return hit with Sigyns magic.
“You stand no chance against me.”
“You keep saying that.” She blasted her magic and this time she didn't miss. Sigyn almost fell to the floor. “Are you trying to convince yourself?”
“Ha!” She laughed. “I know you are trying to distract me. You are not good at this, Y/N.”
“Oh, but I am.” She told her as she disappeared into thin air and appeared behind her, kicking her back and making her fall to the floor this time.
“An illusion? That is cheap, even for you.”
“You've always been a sore loser.” Y/N shook her head and landed on her feet gracefully.
Sigyn got up and faced her, but couldn't stand for much longer as another blast of magic hit her. And another, and another.
When she managed to get up, she strutted towards Y/N with an expression so livid it made her question what person she had let into her life for these past two years.
Sigyn kicked her in the ribs and she fell on her back, wheezing. When she approached her again, Y/N kicked the back of her legs and made her fall on her back.
For a bit, they kept throwing punches and blasting magic at the other.
“Alright, time to distract her.” She said into her earpiece.
“On it.” Sam said and began shooting at her from the sky.
“These mindless mortals!” Sigyn groaned, more annoyed than anything else.
Perfect, Y/N thought.
“Sam, keep her occupied, I need to get the dagger.” She looked at Loki. “Loki, love, could I borrow your favorite dagger?”
“I- yes, darling.” He said, narrowing his eyes at her, confused.
“Thanks.” She said and then she closed her eyes and concentrated on conjuring the dagger she had given Loki a few years back, when they had not confessed their love yet.
Meanwhile, Sigyn was trying to blast Sam with her magic and he was dodging her attempts. Until he wasn't anymore.
“Sam!” Y/N yelled as her friend fell from the sky. “Someone get him!” She cried.
“Another one on the list of dead loved ones?”
Y/N clenched her teeth and looked at her. That's when she heard Wanda speak on the earpiece.
“He's okay, just hurt.” Relieve flooded her in waves and she looked at Sigyn with so much rage she could've killed her right then and there.
“You are not going to win this Sigyn.”
“Oh, but I already have.” She said, gesturing around her, at the avengers fighting and getting more tired by the second.
Y/N looked at them, they wouldn't be able to hold on for much longer. She closed her eyes and concentrated in summoning her magic. Then she opened them and looked at her sister.
“I swear to you, you are going to regret this.” She said strutting towards her with a set jaw.
Y/N hit her again and again, while Sigyn did the same. The ones around them couldn't tell who was winning, which worried them. Sigyn, on the other hand, was sure that she was.
“Keep hitting me all you want, you know that it won't kill me. I on the other hand-” Y/N hit her on her stomach. “I can kill you.”
“I dare you to try.”
“Oh, I will.” Sigyn pulled out the dagger and began throwing jabs at Y/N. She dodged most of them, except for a few scratches here and there.
Y/N kicked the goddess onto the floor and the dagger went flying in the air, falling a few meters away.
Rolling on the ground and grunting, they were both trying to fight off the other and grab the knife.
Suddenly, an explosion rang out behind her, where everyone else was, and she turned briefly, ignoring the screams from her teammates. Then, everything turned into a slow motion movie. Screams could be heard, but only as echoes.
“Look down, sister.” Sigyn's voice sounded distant but she did as told.
“Y/N!” Loki's voice rang out as she found the dagger dunked in her stomach. “Y/N!” He kept screaming, trying to get to her, but the soldiers wouldn't let him.
She turned around slowly and looked at him. At her love, her everything. She looked around, the broken and tired faces of her family, the reason she was alive. Her life flashed before her eyes, every moment that led her to where she was now. She then looked up and begged for a miracle to happen. Turning to him, she whispered:
“I love you, Loki. Forever.” And then she fell to the ground, limp.
“No!” He wailed, his voice shattered.
“I told you she did not stand a chance against me.” Sigyn said, standing up.
“I'm going to kill you.” Natasha said, full of rage and grief.
“Ha!” The goddess laughed. “I don't think any of you understand what just happened. Y/N was your only chance, and she's dead. So now, kneel before your new queen!”
When no one did as told, still standing and prepared for a fight, she groaned and looked up at the sky in annoyance.
“I said, kn-” She choked on her own words as blood began pouring out of her mouth. She looked down to see a red stain on her stomach, growing bigger by the second.
“I told you… I'd win.” Y/N told her between small gasps as Sigyn fell to the floor.
“How did you…” She tried to ask.
“I switched the daggers. You stabbed me with Loki's dagger and I… stabbed you with the dagger of death.” Sigyn began coughing. “I want you to know…” She looked at the goddess, her sister, the one she had spent every day with ever since she appeared on the compound claiming that she was not who she thought she was. In many ways, Sigyn changed her for the better, in other many, many ways, she did not. She looked at her sister and remembered every night spent reading together, singing silly songs, watching scary movies just to see her terrified face when a jumpscare happened. She looked at her sister and couldnt find it in herself to care. So her next words, she said them very slowly. “I want you to know… that this is for my family.” And she stabbed her again, in her heart.
“I-Im sorry.” Sigyn said slowly, in a hushed whisper, as she was dying.
“I don't forgive you.”
And after coughing a few times, her body laid limp on the grass. When it did, the soldiers began slowly falling too. Then, Y/N's vision began to blur, the adrenaline wearing out and her wound beginning to cause its effects.
Before she fell to the ground, someone caught her.

you don't know how it all happened. one second, everything was perfect. the next, you were acting like a crazy person and saying horrible and hurtful things. and now you're pretty sure you've officially lost him forever.
\\\\
it all started with her. agent carpenter. pretty, blue eyed blonde, flirty, perfect agent carpenter.
“alright everyone,” tony begins and the people in the meeting fall into silence. “as you all know, a new member is joining us on the avengers initiative.” they all nod, including you. “her name is samara carpenter and she was personally recruited by fury. which means she's very good at what she does.” the billionaire looks at steve and he nods, taking the lead.
“alright, i want you all to be nice and welcoming. especially you buck.” he says, making most of the people there snort. you look at him.
“what did i do now?” bucky asks, incredulous.
“nothing yet, but if you just stare at her and don't greet her like a normal person she'll leave this team as fast as she came.” sam tells him. the grumpy super soldier rolls his eyes.
“whatever, bird-brain.”
steve shakes his head in disapproval of the two bickering idiots but soon enough he's back on track with the presentation.
bucky's rough gaze scans the room until it falls on you. his eyes soften when he sees that you are already looking at him. you give him a soft and playful smile, which he returns.
after the meeting is done and everyone is dismissed, you head to your room.
not five seconds pass until someone knocks on the door. you smile, because you know who it is.
“come in!” you sing-song.
when he enters, you can't help but stare at him. you've been together for a year now but you still couldn't believe that he was yours. he was so beautiful, so funny, so kind, so dumb sometimes, just so… him. you loved him so much. yet you still hadn't said it. you were trying to take things slow, for both of your sakes.
“hey.” you tell him as he closes the door behind him. he has a look on his face which you recognize. something's bothering him.
“c'mere.” you pat the spot next to you on the bed.
he wastes no time in dropping himself unceremoniously on the mattress and letting out a sigh.
you begin to run your hands through his hair.
“d'you think i'm scary?” he asks with a pout adorning his beautiful pink lips. god, you want to kiss him so badly. so that's what you do. you peck his lips and then immediately shake your head with a smile.
“do you think that adorable pout could be scary?” he purses his lips to stop himself from smiling, but still, a small smile plays on his lips.
“y/n, i'm being serious.” he sighs. you do too.
“maybe to some people you could be. not to me though.”
“but when you first met me-”
“i was too busy thinking about how hot you were to worry about you being scary.” he laughs. god, how you love that sound. you would ridicule yourself to hear it. “is this about what steve and sam said?”
he shrugs.
“i just… hate that i'm so socially inadequate.”
you hand in his hair stops. he furrows his brows.
“bucky,” you begin, “we are a bunch of weirdos, all of us. there is not one person on this team who is socially adequate.”
“but at least the others can fake it, you can fake it.”
“you know what my favorite thing about you was when we first started to become friends?” you ask and he shakes his head. “that your face said it all. if you weren't in the mood for something, i could tell from a mile away, and in return, if something excited you, it would be contagious.” you caress his cheek and he leans into your touch. “and when i couldn't pretend, i always knew you were there to just sit in silence with me. no expectations to be socially acceptable.”
“i don't know how you do it.” he sighs. you frown.
“do what?”
“make every bad thing about me sound so… good.”
your frown deepens.
“hey.” you straddle him and grab his face in between both your hands. “you are perfect. just like you are. don't you dare change yourself.” you tell him firmly. then you purse your lips. “unless you totally want to for whatever reason and i would totally support you because-” you suddenly fall silent. he looks at you, expectant for you to finish your sentence. “because you know i'm here for you, no matter what.”
he smiles softly.
“i know, doll. me too, i'm always here for you no matter what.” you purse your lips to stop yourself from spilling your heart out of your mouth as you caress his cheekbone with your thumb.
“how about we watch a movie? you can pick.”
he pecks your lips and nods.
you spend what is left of the day watching movies and cuddling.
\\\\
two days after that meeting, she arrives. you're all hanging around the common kitchen when steve appears with someone trailing behind him.
“everyone, this is agent carpenter.”
“please, call me samara. or sammie even.”
“sammie, nice to meet you.” sam is the first one to greet her. “i'm sam wilson, but the coolest avenger is fine too.”
you shake your head and roll your eyes. then, you take a step forward, but before you can introduce yourself and welcome her to the team, you see her eyes flicking over to something right next to you. or someone. her eyes shine with curiosity and attraction.
“hi, nice to meet you.” she smirks. you swallow slowly.
bucky gives her a nod, but then he seems to remember what steve and sam told him and attempts to give her a smile.
“hi, i'm bucky.”
“bucky,” she repeats slowly, almost tasting the name in her mouth. she's about to say something else but before she can, you speak up.
“i'm y/n. welcome to the team.” you smile as honestly as you possibly can, but dread fills your stomach.
“hi!” she smiles at you. “you're so pretty, oh my god!”
you give her a tight smile.
“thank you.”
“of course!”
the rest of the team introduces themselves, even though she insists she already knows almost all of them and then you all go about your day.
\\\\
it had been a month since she arrived at the compound. you had seen her a few times, mostly during training. but you didn’t particularly go out of your way to talk to her. there was something you didn’t like. maybe it was your intuition, or maybe it was the fact that she did seem to go out of her way to talk to your boyfriend. and he did not seem upset by that, the opposite actually. he seemed to enjoy it.
you were not a jealous person, least of all with bucky. but something about her irked you. something about her made you doubt yourself and everything you believed in.
“i like her,” natasha says while she paints her nails, laying on her stomach on your bed.
wanda hums in agreement while she flips through the pages of a beauty magazine. you don’t say anything.
“what about you, y/n?”
“um, yeah.” you try to give them a convincing smile but based on the looks they give you, you do not succeed.
“okay, spill the tea.” wanda tells you. had she been learning internet lingo?
you sigh.
“i just- i don’t know.” you shake your head. “doesn’t something feel off to you?”
“not really.” wanda says as natasha narrows her eyes.
“you’re jealous.” she finally decrees.
“i’m not.” you respond defensively.
“you’re jealous that she seems to be getting along with barnes.”
“i-“ you begin your sentence with the intention of uttering a lie, but it dies right on your tongue. “i am. but i don’t want to be.” you confess.
“explain yourself.” she tells you in a tone that could sound commanding and harsh to someone else, but you know it’s filled with care. she’s your best friend, she would never hurt you on purpose. so is wanda, who looks at you with a knowing look you can’t seem to pinpoint the reason for.
“i just- i don’t know. he’s never like that with anyone. since when is he the type to joke around with someone?” you shake your head. “i’m an asshole, cause i should be happy for him. he’s putting himself out there. but i can’t. i’m jealous. so cliche.” you huff.
“you’re not an asshole. an asshole would make a whole scene, give him an ultimatum or something like that. you’re just expressing your feelings to your friends.”
“and, y/n, we all have those ugly feelings. they are human.” wanda tells you, softly. “you should talk to him about it.”
“what if he gets mad?”
“y/n, please. that man adores you, he could never get mad at you. least of all for this.”
maybe they’re right. maybe that’s the healthiest thing to do. and even as you agree with them, you know you will not talk to him about this. because he will realize that you’re right, and that there is so much more to the world than just… you.
\\\\
“come on! you just have to put it in the oven!”
you hear her before you see her. you weren’t expecting to see him though.
right there, almost as if mocking you, they stand. cooking together. he looks so comfortable around her.
they seem to be wrapped up in their own little bubble, so you clear your throat. immediately, they turn to look at you. he widens his eyes, almost looking guilty.
“james found me and i asked him to join me.” she explains, but you stop paying attention the moment she says his name. she called him james.
“james?” you narrow your eyes in question.
he seems to want to say something because he opens his mouth like a fish out of water but you leave mumbling an excuse about training with nat before he can utter a word.
back in your room, you fall to the floor and break down. you knew she was trouble the moment she walked in, but you weren’t expecting this to happen so soon.
heartbroken, you get up from where you’re sitting and head to your bathroom.
the girl in the mirror looks defeated, but you feel angry. if he didn't need you anymore, then you didn’t need him either.
\\\\
the days after that, you ignore him, always having an excuse at the tip of your tongue to not hang out with him. he doesn’t seem to care that much. until, you suppose, after three days, he begins caring.
“doll, can we talk?”
“hm?” you play dumb. you encountered each other in the common kitchen. that damned place, you hated it now, but you were hungry.
“i asked you if we can talk. you seem… distant.” his brows are furrowed. you only know that because you turned to look at him only for a second. other than that, your gaze doesn’t meet his. “come on, y/n, i know something’s wrong.”
you look at him and smile sarcastically.
“you do?”
“yes. please, let’s ta-“
“hey guys!” you roll your eyes at her voice.
“have fun you two!” you tell them, smiling venomously, only looking at him before you leave.
“is everything okay?” she asks.
“i’m sorry samara, i can’t talk right now.” you hear him say before you hear his footsteps getting closer to you in the hallway.
“y/n!” he calls out to you when you get into the elevator without looking behind you. before the doors can close, you see his metal arm get in between them. he gets in and they close. once they do, he hits the stop button. then, he turns to you. he frows when he sees the hate in your eyes. “y/n, what is going on?”
you scoff.
“fuck off, james.” you tell him, your voice full of venom. he widens his eyes in surprise before narrowing them.
“oh, so that’s it? you’re jealous and that’s why you’re avoiding me and acting crazy now?”
“i’m not jealous, but i’m not blind either.” you clench your jaw. “and don’t call me crazy.”
“you are blind if you think something’s going on with her.” he tells you. you roll your eyes and then tilt your head.
“when was the last time you let someone call you james? when was the last time you cooked with someone who was not steve?” he begins breathing heavily. you laugh and bite your lip incredulously. “i think you took the whole being friendly thing too serious.”
“i can't believe you right now.” he shakes his head. “you're angry because i'm not being an asshole to her?”
you scoff.
“oh, please, james.” he clenches his jaw.
“stop calling me that.”
“oh, so i can't call you that but she can?”
“you know that's not-”
“you know what? go ahead. let her call you james. fuck her in the middle of the common room for all i care. lets see how long she puts up with you.” you regret the words as soon as they leave your mouth but its too late, a deep hurt covers his face. still, you can't stop. you're too hurt, too scared. too goddamn stupid. “you think she's going to console you while you have your nightmares?” you laugh venomously. “you think she's going to accept you, all of you?” as you keep talking, his expression turns from pained to angry. resentful even.
he turns to the panel control of the elevator and pushes the stop button so the elevator will move again.
“you know what?” he glances at you and you're almost taken aback by the distant look in his eyes. “maybe i'll fuck her. maybe i'll even date her too. she's probably not as desperate and clingy as you.”
“fuck you.” you spit out.
the doors open, he steps outside. before he leaves, he turns to look at you.
“yeah, you too.”
after the doors close again, you fall to the floor and let out a heart-wrenching sob. you never thought it would end like this.
\\\\
four days. four fucking, horrible, long days bucky has been gone from the compound. you try to ask steve about it, because you know he knows where he is, but he won't tell you. even though you two are close friends and he never got in the middle of a fight between you two– even though you two never fought– he seemed angry. at you. you didn't know if he knew the reason for the fight, but he knew you were in the wrong, that much you knew.
these days all you do is cry, sleep, eat and repeat. you're way past heartbroken, you're miserable, inconsolable. it's all your fault. this prison of sadness was your own making.
you miss him. god, you miss him. you wonder how he is. did he already fuck someone else? did he regret ever being with you?
you don't dare text or call him. you're too embarrassed. you acted like a crazy person, and said awful, horrific things. and you're pretty sure he'll never forgive you. but what will you do then? how will you build a life without him? oh god, you're crying again. great, just great, you think as you turn around in your bed. who were you without him?
\\\\
its the sixth day of his absence when you go talk to steve. you drag yourself from your bed, with your swollen and red rimmed eyes and knock on his door.
“y/n…” he tells you, pity dripping from his tone.
“hey…” you try to give him a fake smile, but as soon as the corners of your mouth move, they turn downwards into a frown, and you start crying. sobbing really. inconsolable sobs leave you as steve wraps you up in his arms.
“hey, hey, it's okay.”
“no, it's not! i hurt him! i don't know why i did it, but i did!” you sob.
“hey,” he pulls away from you a bit to look you in the eyes, “come in. come on, come on.” he tells you as you slowly make your way inside.
you sit down on the edge of his bed and he sits down next to you.
“steve, is he- is he okay?”
he looks at you. you know him, so you know that that look means he isn't.
“he's safe though.”
“i really messed up.”
“i know.”
“he told you?”
“he didn't need to. i saw it on camera. wanted to know why the elevator stopped working for a while.”
you put your head in your hands and begin sobbing again.
“oh my god.” you sob. “i-i'm so sorry you had to see that. i dont… i dont know what-” a hiccup escapes you. “i can't-” another hiccup. “oh god…” your shoulders shake as you sob into your hands.
“hey…” he draws comforting circles on your back, but nothing can comfort you. not when he's hurt and hates you and it's all your fault. “hey.”
“steve, how can i fix it? can i even-” hiccup, “can i even fix it?”
he looks at you with pity.
“i don't know, y/n. i think he's gonna need some time.”
“oh my god.” you say. steve had always rooted for you two, so if he's saying it can't be fixed it really means it can't. “i'm going to die.”
“you're not going to die.”
“i can't live without him. i can't.” you shake your head frantically. “please, just tell me where he is. i need to-”
“i dont think it's a good idea.” he tells you sympathetically.
“please,” you beg him, “please, i need to- if it ends…” more tears fall from your eyes. “it can't end like that. please. he deserves more than that.”
he looks at you, seemingly pondering what you're saying. you look at him the whole time, pleading. he sighs. he's going to tell you.
\\\\
you look at the old building that seems to be deteriorating with each passing second. you straighten down your clothes (steve insisted you get properly showered and dressed) and take a deep breath. he's staying at a safe house in brooklyn. of course. it was so predictable and so him, you almost decided to leave. maybe you should let it end how it ended. what if this time it was worse? but you didn't have the luxury to think like that. it was over, but you needed him to remember you as the good times you shared, not that damned last time.
you enter the building and go up the stairs to the seventh floor, since there is no elevator.
when you reach his door, a green one who looked like if you blew on it it would fall down, you freeze. what are you even supposed to say to him? hi, bucky, sorry i told you she wouldn't be able to put up with you, insinuating that you are hard to love, hope everythings okay between us! ugh, you wanted the earth to swallow you whole.
you take another deep, slow breath, because you know otherwise he'll be able to hear you. then, you knock two times.
when the door opens he takes your breath away. this time not because he's gorgeous but because you're so scared that you fear you're going to pass out.
“what do you want?” he asks harshly. you feel tears prick your eyes but you blink them away.
“hear me out, please.”
“no, thank you.” he goes to close the door, but you swiftly get inside before he does. he slams the door behind him when he turns around to look at you, now inside the apartment, looking uncomfortable and out of place. “i told you i didn't want to hear you out.”
“just-”
“leave.”
“one second-”
“leave, y/n.”
“bucky-”
“oh, so now i'm bucky?” your lip wobbles.
“you're always bucky.”
“not last time we talked.”
“that's why i'm here.” he lifts his chin, looking at you with so much indifference you wonder if he ever looked at you with love in his eyes.
“i don't care to hear you explain yourself.” a tear escapes your eye. you dry it with your sleeve harshly. his face seems to soften for a second but then it goes back to its harshness.
“i'm not here- i'm not here to explain myself.” he looks at you.
“why are you here then?” you sigh.
“remember that time you took me to feed the ducks on that park?”
“yes. so?”
you smile softly as tears fall down your face.
“that was the time i told you i wanted to be your girlfriend. no one ever took me to such a silly date.” you chuckle softly. then you frown in pain looking at the floor now. he shifts his weight from one feet to the other, impatient.
“what's your point?”
“that's how i'd like you to remember me.”
“what?” you look at him. he's frowning.
“i know that the last time we talked i was… crazy. i just- i know theres no going back, but id like, for the sake of what we had, for you to not remember me like that.” you tell him. “because we were more than that.” the last word comes out broken to give way to a silent sob. you try to compose yourself. “I'm sorry. don't pay attention to that.” you give him a fake smile, which you know he can see right through.
“y/n-”
“okay, i'll leave. but… come back to the compound. i'll move out if you want me to, just, don't stay away from your friends just because of me.” you go to leave, walking past him, when he grabs your arm. when you turn around there are unshed tears in his eyes.
“i don't care about the compound. or about remembering you.” oh. you widen your eyes and heavy tears leave them.
“okay, i'm- i'm sorry for suggesting-”
“no.” you nod, understanding. “no, no.” he repeats. he grabs you by the shoulders and he crouches so he's eye level with you. “i don't want to have to remember you.”
you frown.
“but, bucky-”
“but i probably should.” he cuts you off.
“yeah,” you laugh humorlessly as you cry. “you should. i'm sorry. i never should've come here. i'm sorry.”
“stop saying sorry and explain to me what the hell happened.” you tilt your head.
“i… i got jealous.”
“that's it? that's why you hurt me?” he asks. you look down. this was it. he was giving you a chance. explain yourself like you never have before, you think to yourself.
“i never got why you were with me-”
“stop saying were. this could end today, but as of now, were still together.” you purse your lips. “hey, hey, its okay.” he says softly as he puts his hands on your cheeks and wipes the tears that begin falling again with his thumbs.
“im sorry-” he looks at you pointedly. you nod. “i just… i don't understand why you're with me. im not- im nothing like you.” you begin. he frowns. “you are kind and thoughtful and amazing and im- im not good like you.”
“what? y/n, you're the best person i know.”
“you can't still think that.” he looks at you honestly. he does? “see? you're so- and i'm so…”
“lets sit down.” he tells you and you both do, on the old couch thats near the window. he gestures for you to continue.
“i just- you'll never get it. and thank god you won't. but im not- im not a natural, you know? not like you, not like her.” you fidget with your hands. “you guys, the team, you like me because i'm fake. you wouldn't if you knew the real me. but i showed it to you pretty easily, i guess.” you laugh without a trace of humor. he frowns. then, he grabs your hand and caresses your knuckles. bucky takes a deep breath before speaking.
“y/n, i like- no, scratch that. i love you because i know you.” your face contorts in pain. you start crying heavily again. “hey, hey, come on baby, talk to me.”
“i just… she's so… perfect. for everyone, for you.”
“i don't want her, i want you.”
“you cant want me after what i said to you. i hurt you and i'll never forgive myself for that.”
“yes, you hurt me. but you were hurt too, i just didn't see it.”
“im so scared you'll wake up one day and realize there is so much more to the world than… me.” you sob and cover your face with your hands.
bucky pulls your hands away from you face and pulls you into his lap.
“listen to me.” he tells you firmly. “there is nothing more to the world than you. you are it for me, y/n. i love you.”
“bucky-” you hiccup. “i'm so sorry i said that about you. i promise you i just said it to you because i- i was lashing out. anyone would accept and love you, you are literally the most amazing-” hiccup, “person-” hiccup, “in the universe.”
he smiles softly at you and the unshed tears come back, but this time, he lets them fall.
“baby, listen to me. i love you. i'm not going anywhere.” you open your mouth to speak but he beats you to it. “and i forgive you. i promise you i don't resent you. i know what it's like to lash out when you're hurt.”
“bucky-” you sob against his chest.
“shh, baby, its okay.” he soothes you, rubbing comforting circles on your back. “it's okay, i got you.”
you take a shuddering breath and lift your head from his chest to look at him. you grab his face with both your hands.
“i promise you i'll never lash out again. im so sorry. i-” he gives you a pointed look. “i know. im not saying sorry anymore. sor-” you purse you lips and he lets out a laugh. then, he shakes his head incredulous and looks at you with so much adoration in his eyes you feel like you're going to pass out from all the love you feel for this man. “can i kiss you?” you ask him shyly.
“please.”
and so you do. the kiss is soft, vulnerable, you're telling him how sorry you are, how much you love him, and thats when you remember you didn't say it.
he whines when you pull away, something that makes you smile.
“bucky,”
“yeah, baby?”
“i love you. so much i feel like i'm going to throw up.” he lets out a loud laugh.
“i love you more, doll.”
you spend the rest of the day cuddled up on that couch in that old apartment, not ready to go to the compound yet. but you do send a text to steve before turning off your phone to spend time with the love of your life. you almost lost him, but you didn't, and as you lay in that old mattress on the floor, while he makes love to you and whispers of words of adoration and devotion fill your ears, you vow to him one thing. you'll always be his.

MASTERLIST OF THE STORY
Chapter 56: Hello Hela, Bye bye Sigyn.
“Are we sure about this?” Bruce asked for the hundredth time.
“No.” Natasha said and Y/N at the same time said:
“Yes.” They looked at each other. “Come on Nat, it’ll be fine.” The redhead in response rolled her eyes.
“Alright. Are you guys ready?” Steve asked both Loki and Y/N and they both nodded. Then Loki turned to look at her.
“Remember the spell darling, otherwise you won’t be able to go to Hel and come back.”
“Don’t worry babe, I got it.” She winked at him. He huffed and shook his head lightly. “I love you.” He mouthed and so did she.
“Alright, shock them in 3, 2, 1…”
————————————
Her chest hurt. Her head too. Everything hurt. Had it worked? She looked around her, it was pitch black. Then she heard him.
“Y/N!” Loki. “Y/N, where are you?!”
“I’m here!” She screamed into nothingness. “I'm here Loki, where are you?”
“Here! Follow my voice!” He told her.
After a while of following her name as it was being shouted by Loki she saw him.
“Loki! I can see you!”
“Y/N!” He ran to her and embraced her in his arms. “By the stars, I thought you forgot the spell.” She pulled away a bit to look at him unimpressed.
“It's nice to know you have so much confidence in me.” He rolled his eyes and smiled despite himself.
“You know it is not because I don't trust you that I was worried.”
“I know.” She smiled. “I just like to annoy you, pretty boy.” The god opened and closed his mouth, completely speechless after the pet name she had used. “After we leave whatever this place is we are going to discuss your reaction to being called a pretty boy, just so you know Lokes.”
“Whatever.” He rolled his eyes.
“Where are we by the way?”
“Hel, I assume.”
“You assume?”
“It is my first time here.”
“Right, yes.” She said sheepishly. Then she frowned. “What is that noise?”
“I don't know…”
A loud banging could be heard not very far away from where they were. They looked at each other with wide eyes.
“Loki, I'm scared.” Y/N admitted.
“Grab my hand.” And she did.
Suddenly, a group of… zombies? Could be seen approaching them at a fast pace.
“Run!” He told her and they began rushing away from the army. They ran for a bit as they chased them until one of them grabbed Y/N.
“Loki!”
“Y/N!”
And then everything turned black again.
—————————————-
“Argh…” She groaned, rubbing her head. Had someone hit her? She couldn't remember past hearing those loud noises with Loki. Loki! Where was he? “Loki!” No answer. “Loki!”
“He is not here.” A deep voice answered.
“Where is he? Who are you?” She asked, scared.
“My name is Njal, I am a prisoner here.”
“Where are you? I can't see you.”
“I am in the cell next to you.”
“Oh. Is Hel full of cells?” The voice chuckled.
“No, this is the neutral area. It's the place where the neutral people come to. No torture but no reward either.” Y/N frowned and shook her head.
“I need to talk to Hela. Where is she?” Now the voice laughed loudly.
“Hela? She is in the Castle of Darkness, good luck with getting there.”
“Well I just… I just have to get out of here and then find Loki and then… go.” She said, unsurely.
“The bars in this cells are cursed with the fire of Hel, they will melt you if you even dare get close to them.” Y/N looked at the bars and widened her eyes.
“Okay, not gonna do that.” She said to herself. She groaned again, how could she deliver a message to Hela if she couldn't leave this cell? “I know! I'll pray to her.”
She closed her eyes and put her hands together.
Hela, Goddess Of Death, Odinsdottir, my name is Y/F/N and I need your help… to kill a god.
Opening her eyes, she reached the conclusion that if Hela's interest didn't pique at that then she would never be able to get her attention and therefore would never be able to defeat Sigyn.
Sighing she closed her eyes and began counting the minutes as they passed.
——————————————
“Girl! Open your eyes.” Groggily she did as told, looking around confused before remembering where she was.
“What-”
“Queen Hela wants to see you.” She nodded quickly and got up as the guard opened the cell.
—————————————-
As she walked through the castle she couldn't help but admire the beauty. It was sharp and dark, just like Hela, but stunning nonetheless.
The guard was ahead of her and didn't even look back to check if she was still there. Y/N supposed that he thought she wouldn't dare explore this place alone and if he did, he was right.
After a few minutes of walking, he turned to her. They had arrived at gigantic doors, almost reaching the high ceiling.
“The queen is expecting you inside.”
She nodded and began walking towards the doors and when she reached them, they opened on their own.
Y/N took a deep breath before entering.
“Astrid of Asgard,” Helas voice rang out in the dark room, “you are far from home.”
“Queen Hela,” she bowed. “I am. I have a favor to ask you.”
“A favor? And what makes you think I would help you?” She asked with almost disgust in her voice.
“Because as I said, I need your help to kill a god.”
“And what god is that?”
“Sigyn of Asgard… my sister.”
Helas laugh echoed through the whole room. Then her figure slowly emerged from the shadows. She looked at Y/N with a mocking expression.
“I know all about your sister Astrid, the question is… why should I care?”
“Hela,” Y/N sighed. “If you know about my sister then you know about me, and if you do, you know I am not from here. And I am not talking about Hel.”
“The universe traveler, I know.”
“Yes.” She swallowed. “I… I know about you too.”
“Is that so?”
“Yes…” Y/N nodded. “I know that you were wronged. I know that all you wanted was to complete your mission, the mission Odin set you out to complete.” Hela tilted her head to the side. “I know you were cast aside, left to rule this place because Odin feared your power.”
“I do not care for your sympathy and you have not answered my question.”
“My birthright, just like yours was to be the Queen of Asgard after Odin, is to become the next volvä.” She looked straight into her eyes. “My sister is trying to take that away from me, just like Odin did to you.”
“Not long ago you found out that you were Astrid Freyjadottir, and say whatever you want, but I do not believe that the only reason you came here is to fulfill a prophecy you didn't even know existed two years ago. So,” she smiled wickedly, “what is it you truly want?”
“I want to kill her.”
“Why?”
“Because she will become unstoppable and therefore a threat to the universe's safety. Not only this universe, but all the others.”
“Why do you want to kill her?” Hela asked again, with more intention in her tone.
Y/N looked at her annoyed.
“I told you why. She's a threat.”
“Oh she is, but she's not my problem. So, unless you tell me the truth, I will not even consider helping you.”
“She's a threat.” Y/N repeated.
“Why do you care?”
“She could hurt my friends, my… my home.”
“I see.” She began to turn around and Y/N felt desperation clawing at her throat.
“She killed my family!” Hela turned around and tilted her head. “She killed them and I… I want revenge.”
The goddess grinned like the cheshire cat and raised her eyebrows.
“Well then, I suppose I will help you.” Y/N breathed, relieved. “On one condition…” She looked at Hela and nodded. “You let me have the dagger with her soul in it.”
“What are you going to do with it?”
“I'm going to have my fun.”
“I-” Yes, she hated her. But it was still her sister. It was still Sigyn, the person she had grown so close to over the past few years.
“You?” Hela asked, amused.
“Deal.” She said firmly. “Do whatever you want with her.”

\\\\
you know exactly when it started, and it makes you furious. everything was fine, it was more than fine, it was perfect. until people thought they had the right to meddle in things that weren’t their concern, like who you should and shouldn’t love. and, for the most part, you could handle it, but then… that damned comment. a stupid twitter comment made by an account without a profile picture set him off. by him, you mean bucky barnes, your boyfriend. and by the damned comment, you mean the one that said that they hoped he wouldn’t turn into the winter soldier and kill you by accident. since then he’s been avoiding you and every time you try to talk to him, he runs away. and you’re sick of it. that’s why you find yourself angrily stomping through your way to his room in the compound.
“bucky.” you call out to him as you knock on the door. you can hear some shuffling of things on the other side so you know he’s there. but he’s playing dumb. “bucky.” you call again. nothing. you sigh, annoyed. “james buchanan barnes if you do not open this door right this second-“ the door opening cuts you off and you fall silent. there, in all his sleepy glory, is your beautiful super soldier of a boyfriend.
“i was sleeping.” he tells you in a low grumble.
“too bad. we need to talk.”
“about?”
“oh you know,” you shrug nonchalantly, “about the fact that you’ve been avoiding me like the plague.”
“i haven’t-“ you don’t listen to his excuse and let yourself in. he shuts the door but doesn’t turn around to look at you.
“james. look at me.” you say, a bit more harsher than you intended. “bucky.” you try again, this time more softly, but it still comes out a bit impatient and you know he can hear it.
bucky slowly turns around and glances at you for a quick moment before directing his gaze to the floor and putting his hands in his sweatpants pockets.
for a bit you stay in silence and just look at him while he avoids your stare. you know it’s making him nervous but you don’t care, not right now, not when you’re this angry and frustrated and hurt.
he clears his throat and glances at you for a second to utter his next few words.
“i haven’t been avoiding you.” and his gaze is back on the carpeted floor.
“the fact that you can’t look at me kind of proves that’s bullshit.”
“it’s not-“
“it is.” you cut him off. “you have been avoiding me and i know why.” that’s when he looks at you. you purse your lips. “that comment-“
“what comment?” he asks defensively.
“you know which one, i don’t want to say it.”
“why?” he asks bitterly. “scared it’s true?”
you frown.
“what?” you say, eyes wide. “are you dumb?”
“we both know it y/n, no need to pretend.”
“oh, so you really are dumb!” you laugh without a trace of joy. he frowns, almost offended.
“i’m not- i’m being realistic.”
“realistic? that’s realistic? reading one stupid comment and then avoiding me?” you tell him, your voice raising a bit with every word spoken.
“yes! it’s for your own good.”
“dumb!” you repeat again, like a child throwing a tantrum. “you are what’s good for me!”
his eyes soften at that but he remains unconvinced.
“i’m not.”
“yes you are!”
“it’s best if you leave.” at that your heart drops to your stomach. he really thinks he will hurt me, you think.
“bucky…” you begin.
“y/n, please. leave.”
“bucky.”
“y/n.”
“i won’t leave.”
“leave.” he grits through his teeth.
“no! i love you!” you shout at him as tears begin falling down your face.
“you can’t!” he shouts back.
“why not?!”
“i’m a murderer, a monster! i’m going to end up hurting you!”
“you won’t-“ you plead but he cuts you off.
“you can’t act like that’s not what everyone thinks when they see us together.” he runs his metal hand through his hair in frustration and then raises it to his face to look at it with sorrowful eyes. “you can’t. you’re smarter than this.”
you frown. you’re smarter than this. smarter than loving him as much as you do? smarter than giving this man the love he deserves after a life full of so much pain? smarter than fighting for the one thing that feels right in your life?
you bite the inside of your cheek and look at him. his gaze is back on the floor, but this time you really need him to look at you. so you walk the few steps that separate you both and grab his face with your hands, turning his head your way. still, he doesn’t look at you.
you can see his blue eyes even though they’re not directed at you and they are so sad, so defeated. but they hold so much love there, you know it. he has confessed many times that he burns for you in the same way you do for him. that is why he’s so scared. but what he doesn’t know is that you are too. the idea of ever doing something that could hurt him terrifies you. maybe you’re not scared to hurt him in the same way he’s scared to hurt you, but you understand what he’s feeling, even if you can’t relate to his exact experience.
“bucky…” you begin. his quivering lips purse in an attempt to not break. “baby. please look at me.” you plead. slowly, he does. “listen to me. i’ve told you a million times, but until you believe it i will have to keep saying it. what happened all those years, what your body did, it wasn’t you, it was them.” he shakes his head but you hold him steady, looking at you. “listen to me.” you repeat. “no one has ever taken care of me the way you do. no one,” you tell him firmly as a few tears fall from your eyes, “has ever been kinder to me than you. no one has ever loved me more than you. and i have never loved anyone, anyone, the way i love you.” his eyes shine with unshed tears and you usher him to let them fall with a soft smile. he does. “you are not a murderer, and you are not a monster. you are a fighter, you’re the bravest and kindest person i’ve ever met and most importantly… you are my love.” you chuckle through both of your tears. “they will always have something to say, but this? this is ours james, we can’t let anyone tell us what we are. the only people who know that is you and me. and you know it, right?” he blinks and more tears fall down his cheeks. you wipe them away with your thumbs and began peppering kisses all over his face. “you know it, right?” you ask again. he nods with his eyes closed, enjoying the feeling of your lips on his skin. “say it. please.”
“i know.” he tells you. “i know, i’m sorry.”
“it’s okay baby.”
“no, it’s not. i- i shouldn’t have avoided you, i just- i got all in my head and you know how it is-“
“i do.” you give him a small smile and he returns it before frowning.
“i didn’t mean to make you cry.”
“me neither.” you tell him and he laughs.
“i forgive you, doll.”
“oh? so we’re back on doll territory? no more y/n?”
he narrows his eyes playfully.
“no more y/n, doll-face.”
you purse your lips to stop yourself from grinning but fail miserably. but then you get serious.
“bucky, you got it right? that you won’t hurt me and that- that you shouldn’t listen to what people say, that my love for you is so much bigger than all the hate they may throw at us.”
he slowly smiles and looks into your eyes with so much adoration it makes your stomach twist itself up in knots.
“i got it doll. i don’t know if i’ll ever not be scared to hurt you, but i’ll tell you if i do feel like that. i won’t push you away.”
“please don’t.”
“i won’t.” he grins and grabs your waist to pull you closer to him. as his lips ghost over yours, he says: “it’s you and me against the world.”

Chapter 55: The dagger of death.
“Guys, this might sound very stupid but… has any of you watched Lucifer the tv show?”
Everyone stayed silent and she took that as a no.
“What does that have to do with anything?” Natasha asked.
“I might have a plan.”
“What kind of plan?” Steve asked.
“I'm gonna tell it to you and you're gonna think I'm insane but then you're going to realize that it's actually brilliant.”
“Okay, Y/L/N. Spill it.”
“We use a ship to go to Nidavellir. There we forge the dagger of death, then we come back here, and here comes the tricky part.” She said, raising her index finger. “One of us has to die.”
“What?!” Everyone exclaimed, alarmed.
“Just temporarily!” She said, raising her hands in defense.
“Y/N, what the hell are you talking about?”
“There's an episode of Lucifer where he has to retrieve something from hell, and so he dies by someone shocking him and then someone bringing back in the same way.”
“Are you insane? No, let me rephrase that. You are insane.” Wanda told her.
“I knew you would say that, but it's the only way. This is a world threatening event, Thanos like.”
“Y/N, what's your plan? Who even dies?” Steve asked her, unbelieving.
“That's the thing…” Everyone narrowed their eyes. “I do.”
“No way in hell. No pun intended.” Tony said.
“Y/N, you are not killing yourself.” Loki told her firmly.
“Loki, I love you and I hear you, but I'm going to do it.” He looked at her and he knew she would do it anyway. So he thought of the next best idea.
“Fine, then I will go with you.”
“Guys! No one is dying.” Tony said, but Y/N and Loki were not listening.
“Listen, everyone, Steve.” She began, looking at him. “If anyone has a better plan, then we execute it, but no one seems to have something better so… this is it.”
“Y/N, what if you guys die? What if you don't come back?” Wanda asked her, frowning.
“We will come back, it will work. Guys, you've pulled off crazier things, I've seen you do it.” She told them trying to sound encouraging, but the mood had turned grim.
“Alright,” Steve said, “Y/N is right. It's our only way.”
“Thank you, Steve.”
“Just… we need to be careful. We can't afford to lose our resident lunatic.”
“Hey!” She slapped his arm.
And so they began planning the details and preparing themselves for the next war.
————————————-
After the meeting, Thor, Loki and Y/N headed to New Asgard, where they were to meet Valkyrie and ask her to borrow her ship.
“Your Princes!” She said as soon as they got out of the quinjet. “And my favorite not mortal.”
“Val!” Y/N exclaimed and went to hug her. The other one just patted her head like a dog, not used to physical affection but still in need of it.
“My Queen,” Thor bowed his head, “we come to ask you a favor.”
“Ask away.” She told him as she had her arm wrapped around Y/N's shoulders. “Just no sexual favors please, I've run out of those.”
“What? No.” Y/N told her, frowning. “We need to borrow your ship.”
“My ship? What for?”
“A war is coming and we must go to Nidavellir to forge a deadly weapon.” Loki told her, very seriously. Valkyrie laughed loudly.
“A war? Against who?”
“My sister.”
—————————————
“So, she's evil and wants to kill you?” Valkyrie asked after Y/N told her the whole story. “Geez, wonder why that sounds familiar…” She said looking at the both Asgardian brothers.
“Yeah, pretty much.” Y/N said, her lips in a tight line.
“And your plan is to forge the dagger of death in Nidavellir and then die temporarily to go to hell and convince Hela, the person who caused Ragnarok and is just as evil, or even more, as your sister, to enchant it?”
“Y-yeah.” She nodded. “In my defense, I watch a lot of tv.”
The warrior laughed and shook her head. Then she looked at Y/N and saw that she was serious, so she shrugged.
“You are insane but… what's another life threatening plan gonna do? Actually kill me?”
“Yes!” Y/N exclaimed, lifting her fists in the air, knowing that she had been convinced.
“But… I am coming with you. You are gonna need someone who knows how to drive my ship properly, not like these two brutes.”
“I beg your pardon?”
“Excuse you?” The both brothers said at the same time, making the two women laugh. After the laughter died down and everyone sobered up Thor spoke up.
“Then it is settled. Us four will go to Nidavellir.”
————————————
“Are you sure about this?” Natasha asked her, worry etched onto her face.
“I am Nat, this is our only way.”
“Just… be careful, alright? Don't do anything stupid.”
“I probably will but… nothing too stupid.” She said, making the redhead laugh.
“Lady Y/N, let's go!” Thor called from the ship.
Everyone gathered at the garden of the compound to say goodbye to the two Asgardian brothers, Y/N and Valkyrie as they were to be headed to Nidavellir.
“Kid! Be careful.”
“Yes Tony, I will be. I'm going to space, how cool is that?!” She whisper-yelled and the billionaire let out a loud laugh.
“Very cool.” He told her, still smiling. Then he squeezed her shoulders and gave her a nod.
“Darling, we must go.”
“Right. Well everyone, I'll be back. Let's hope.” She crossed her fingers and everyone looked at her disapprovingly.
“Y/N!” Steve scolded.
“I'm joking. Jesus!” She held up her hands. “Alright, bye!”
“Bye!” Everyone waved their hands as she got on the ship and until it disappeared into the sky they didn't stop.
—————————————
“Alright, one minute for the jump.” Valkyrie said, making Y/N's stomach turn.
Yes, she had traveled universes and fought bad guys and had been kidnapped, but she had never traveled to space. Would she puke her guts out? Would her head explode?
“Darling,” she looked at Loki. “Are you alright?”
“Peachy. Great. Yes.” He looked amused.
“Are you nervous?”
“Ha!” She laughed exaggeratedly. “I'm not.”
“Alright.”
They stayed in silence for a moment, but when the jump began, Y/N grabbed Loki's hands tightly. He didn't say anything, but smiled as he tightened his grip on her hand.
———————————-
When it came into view, everyone gasped. Recovered from its former destruction by the hand of the titan, Nidavellir had once again risen from the ashes. Now not only dwarves lived there but beings from all the realms, beings who worked and lived there, helping their leader, Eitri.
Thor, Valkyrie, Loki and Y/N got out of the ship and approached him.
“Thor!” He exclaimed with joy, as everyone did when they saw the blond Asgardian.
“Eitri! How have you been?”
“Better, better. And you?”
“Great!” Thor bellowed in his usual positive Thor fashion.
“So, what brings you here? Don't tell me you need another hammer!”
“No, no. We need to forge something else.”
“Like what?”
“A dagger of death.” Y/N joined the conversation, finally leaving her spot next to Valkyrie and Loki and walking forward to face the dwarf.
“A dagger of death?” He asked her, frowning.
“Yes. A dagger of death.”
“That is impossible, I cannot help you.”
“Why not?”
“Odin forbade us from creating any weapon that could kill the gods… so Hela would never be able to use it.”
“Eitri,” Thor began, “I understand what you are saying, but Odin is gone and so is Hela.”
“Still, I cannot break an oath.”
“Not even if the universe depended on it?”
“Not even if the universe depended on it.”
Y/N huffed.
“Listen sir, we are gonna get that dagger, whether you want us to or not.”
“I beg your pardon, young lady?”
“The name is Astrid Freyjadottir.” Eitri widened his eyes.
“Astrid Freyjadottir, you are a legend.”
Y/N looked at Loki frowning and he shrugged, communicating with her without words. She looked at the dwarf and stood straight.
“Yes? Well, if I am such a legend, give us the dagger. Please.” She said the last word as an afterthought.
“But-”
“No, I am the daughter of the völva and I command you to forge the dagger of death. Right now.” She told him firmly. Eitri sighed and bowed his head.
“As you wish.”
———————————-
“We got it!” Y/N jumped up and down as they got into the ship. Loki smiled at her giddiness.
“You did, Astrid of Asgard.” She began to feel herself grow hot from embarrassment.
“I- We all did.”
“Right, not mortal. Whatever you say.” Valkyrie told her as she settled herself on the captain's seat.
“Alright, my friends! Let's go back!”
—————————————
“Alright, part two of the plan.” Steve said, hesitant. “You… die.” He told Y/N and Loki.
“Yeah!” She said. “Let's do this!” Loki looked at her, horrified.
“Let's not get too excited.” Natasha told her, almost in a scolding manner.
“Sorry.”
“Alright,” Steve began again, “let's go over it one more time.”

MASTERLIST OF THE STORY
Chapter 54: The plan.
Loki and Y/N looked at each other and nodded. Then they entered the cell.
“Hi Sarah.” Y/N said.
“Y/N,” Sarah seemed surprised to see her. “What… What are you doing here?”
“You were right. About Sigyn.”
“How did you-”
“It doesn't matter.” She cut her off. “What matters is what you know.”
“I don't know that much…” Sarah said, clearly lying.
“Sarah… Ingrid. I know you are scared, not only for you but for your son. I promise you, we will protect the both of you. But you need to help us, otherwise we won't be able to.”
The woman seemed to ponder about it for a few moments before she sighed and opened her mouth to speak.
“Before I say anything, where is Jeremiah?”
“He's with us, we are all taking care of him. He is alright, just misses his mother.” Sarah seemed to be saddened at that. “Maybe we can bring him here tomorrow, for a little visit.”
“Thank you.” Y/N's expression softened.
“No problem.”
Sarah sighed.
“The person who first contacted my parents about the organization was her. Everything was her. The thing is… she needed a face. And she offered my parents enough money to make it worth it. That happened when I was about four or five.” Loki and Y/N listened attentively. “Ever since I can remember she has been saying that one day she was going to do it.” She looked at Y/N. “One day she was going to get rid of her ungrateful sister, her undeserving sister. Of course I only found out that the sister was you when you came into this universe.”
“So, you've known the whole time who I was?” Y/N asked her.
“Yes.” She looked guilty. “It was all part of the plan. Befriend you, then betray you. Make her look like the hero when she attempted to sacrifice herself to fight us.”
“So, she never got hurt?”
“It was all an illusion.”
Y/N felt her heart sink. She had done it on purpose, she made her worry on purpose. She had listened to everything she said and didn't even care. She was a two-faced liar.
“Darling?”
“I'm fine.” She shook her head. “I just can't… believe it. I mean, I do believe it but I just can't believe it.”
He grabbed her hand and squeezed, and she smiled softly at him. Then he got closer to her ear.
“It is not your fault.” He said in a low voice, so only she would hear. Y/N pursed her lips and nodded.
“So how…is she planning to get rid of her sister?” She asked, biting her lip nervously after.
“All the enhanced individuals, she's planning to use them for war.”
“But we already rescued them and the workers all left or died.”
“No Y/N, the workers are the enhanced individuals, they are the ones with a part of her powers, the people you rescued were just people caught in the crossfire. And they didn't leave, they just pretended they did.”
“So she has an army of enhanced individuals who have the power of Sigyn of Asgard. Great, just fantastic.” She said sarcastically.
“You need to kill her.”
“What?!” She widened her eyes. “No, I just… we will just imprison her.”
“She will never stop, you need to kill her.” Sarah told her. “You need to use the dagger of death. You have to kill a god.”
————————————
“So, that’s what Sarah said. Ingrid, sorry.” She shook her head.
“What is a dagger of death?” Steve asked.
“It is an old Asgardian relic,” Thor told him and the rest of the avengers that were in the meeting room, “but it burned in Ragnarok.”
“Can’t we just get another one?” Y/N asked.
“It was forged in Nidavellir and enchanted by our sister, the goddess of death, Hela.” Loki answered her.
“And Hela is…” Steve began saying, waiting for one of the Asgardian brothers to finish.
“Dead… in Hel.” Loki told him.
Everyone sat there in silence, until Y/N broke it.
“Guys, this might sound very stupid but… has any of you watched Lucifer the tv show?”
Everyone stayed silent and she took that as a no.
“What does that have to do with anything?” Natasha asked.
“I might have a plan.”

MASTERLIST OF THE STORY
Chapter 53: Liar, liar, pants on fire.
“Fine, let’s do it.”
The three of them stood around the cauldron.
“Y/N, hang on to it.”
She did as told, remembering the first time she came here, when she found out about her powers. Then Strange got closer to it, as Natasha stood on his side.
Pouring both bottles of blood into the cauldron, he muttered the words he had muttered years ago.
“Ahenum mundi ostendit veritatem. We summon Freyja, goddess of knowledge, wisdom and courage. The völva’s children need guidance.”
A few minutes passed and nothing happened.
“Is this supposed to take so long?” Natasha asked the sorcerer. Then, suddenly, an explosion of colors came out of the Cauldron of the Cosmos. White, green, purple, gold. Then, a figure began forming out of all the colors, a woman. Long black hair and her eyes were completely black too.
“Astrid,” her voice boomed in the sanctum.
“Freyja,” Y/N said. “We need your help.”
“How wondrous to see you, my child. I see you have built a beautiful life here.”
“You… see me?” She asked, tilting her head to the side.
“I see everything, my darling.”
“Did you see me before? In the other universe?” Freyja smiled.
“Yes, I did.”
“You didn't do anything.” Y/N told her, on the verge of getting angry.
“I could not. The prophecy-”
“The prophecy didn’t force you to abandon your child! That's on you.” She argued.
“My love, my dear Astrid, I have never felt more pain than when I had to part ways from you.” The floating woman said, voice laced with pain and sorrow. “My daughter, you have grown into a strong and beautiful woman.”
Y/N swallowed harshly and then pursed her lips.
“Freyja… mother, we need your help. It's about Sigyn.”
“Ah, I knew this day would come.”
“What does the prophecy say?”
“You know it, I told it to you.”
“The völva will leave a child on a foreign land, for them to be the communicator. I know but… what is the full prophecy?”
“My love, close your eyes.” Y/N did as told without arguing. “Try to remember. Listen to my voice and let it guide you.”
At first she couldn't see or hear anything, but then she heard it.
“Hello my baby, you are so beautiful.” A woman's voice rang out. Freyja. “My little Astrid. My goddess of strength and wisdom.” The woman sighed. “I am terribly sorry for leaving you, I hope one day you will be able to forgive me... Do not cry, your mother loves you. You will be a hero, my love. The prophecy must come true.”
She was about to open her eyes and protest but then something else appeared. Images passing as fast as the flash of a camera filled her mind: her on a throne, being named the next völva. Then a war with… Sigyn? Yes! It was her sister. Images of them fighting flooded her mind and when they got to be too much she opened her eyes.
“What-”
“Astrid… you are meant to be the next völva, you were always meant to be the next völva, but Sigyn, my poor daughter, could never accept it.” She told Y/N. “One day I caught your sister trying to curse you… she denied it but I knew. You were not safe, so I had to put you in another universe to protect you… from her.” Freyja shook her head. “Or at least until she inevitably found you. And then I had to banish her.”
“She didn't… find me. I came here.” Y/N frowned.
“No, my darling, you did not.”
Everything hit her at once. She had done it. Sigyn was the reason for every single bad thing that happened in her life. All along, it was her.
“So she… she hurt them, didn't she?” Y/N asked, eyes full of tears. Freyja gave one nod.
“You must not forget, her greed got the best of her. She was not born like this, no one is.”
She shook her head frantically.
“No, no, no, no.” She kept repeating.
“Y/N,” Strange held up his hands in front of him, trying to calm her down. “Try to breathe!”
“No!” She shouted at him. “No! I- I need to leave.”
Then she let go of the cauldron and ran away, with one place in mind.
————————————
“You killed them, didn't you? Say it!” Y/N said as she grabbed Sigyn by her shirt.
“Y/N, calm down!” Steve tried to push her away but she used her magic to make him fall backwards.
From the sanctum, she went directly to the compound, where she found a few of the avengers lounging around with Sigyn. At the sight of her, she immediately went to attack.
“You killed them, you two-faced bitch!” Y/N screeched into her face.
Everyone was on alert, not knowing what was happening. Tony, without Y/N noticing, used his smartwatch to call Loki.
Right after he clicked the “OK” button, shattering glass was heard. Y/N, with her magic, had thrown Sigyn out the window and into the garden. She then flew down to meet her on the grass.
“Y/N, I do not know what you are talking about!” The Asgardian said, looking terrified.
“Oh, save it! I talked to Freyja, I know everything.”
At that, Sigyn's terrified face transformed itself into a smirking one.
“It did take you a while.”
From the distance, a car could be heard. Natasha.
“Y/N! Don't do something you'll regret.”
Y/N didn't even look at the redhead before blasting her sister with her magic. The Asgardian did the same after getting up, sending Y/N flying away.
The rest of the avengers gathered in the garden, including Loki.
“Y/N,” Loki tried to call to her calmly but she was too far gone.
“I'm going to kill you. I swear to you, if it's the last thing I'll ever do, I will kill you.” She said, with so much sincerity it made Sigyns blood run cold. But she hid it perfectly behind a malicious laugh.
“I remember their screams,” she said, “as I appeared in the middle of the road.”
Y/N began trembling from so much anger and tears began staining her cheeks.
“I remember their scared faces,” she continued, “their pleas.”
“Stop it!” Y/N shouted at her and flew over to her.
“Couldn't kill your brother there, I had to go to the hospital and pull the plug.” She told her, pouting mockingly.
Y/N screamed and blasted her so far away she landed on the edge of the woods, her back hitting a tree and hissing in pain.
Tony tried to come up to her but she blasted him away. Then she created a barrier, so they wouldn't be able to pass.
Walking slowly towards her, all the magic she could muster on her fingertips, she prepared herself as the avengers watched helplessly. But before it hit her, she disappeared into thin air, making the blast hit the tree instead and cutting it in half as the remaining part burned in flames.
“No!” Y/N shouted. “No, no, no, no.” She repeated as she looked at the place where her sister was mere seconds ago. “No!” An agonizing sob wrack through her body and she fell to her knees.
Suddenly the barrier went down and Loki ran to her.
"Y/N!” He said as he wrapped his arms around her.
“She killed them, Loki. She killed them.” She sobbed.
“Shh, my love. You are alright, you are alright.” He repeated as he casted a powerful spell to make her fall asleep.
——————————-
Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock. What was that sound? Where was she? Where was Sigyn?
“Sigyn!” She exclaimed, sitting up quickly on her bed. Loki was startled by the sudden noise. “I need to find her!”
“Darling,” he said. She looked at him with wide eyes. “Breathe.”
“Where is she? How long have I been sleeping?” She asked frantically.
“She escaped, and you have been sleeping less than a day.”
“Loki…” She suddenly told him, face twisting in a pained expression. He rapidly went to wrap his arms around her.
“I know, my love. I know.”
“She killed my family…” She sobbed on his chest. “I thought she… I thought she was my family. I thought-”
“I know you did darling, but it is not your fault. You simply always see the best in every person.”
“But how could I have been so stupid?” She pulled away to look at him with tear filled eyes. “I let her into my family, into my home… I shared secrets with her.” She sniffled as he wiped her tears with his thumbs. “She knew how much it hurt me what happened to my family.”
“Listen to me.” He said with a firm tone. “You are not stupid. You could never be stupid, least of all for trusting someone who claimed to care about you, who showed you no sign of lying. You are kind, the kindest, and you trusted the wrong person, but you trusted so many right people.”
She tilted her head to the side, frowning while she thought.
“I did. I did. Trusting you was the best thing I've ever done in my life.” She told him and he smiled softly, then she pursed her lips to stop them from quivering. “I just… It makes me sad.”
“I understand that.”
“Of course you do.” She chuckled breathily. “Loki just… whatever happens now… please stay with me. I hate saying this but I'm gonna need you more than ever.”
“My love, I'm not going anywhere. Ever.”

MASTERLIST OF THE STORY
Chapter 52: Maybe the bitch is right.
“Ingrid-” She shook her head. “Sarah. I don't even know. Why would your parents force you to kidnap me? And to be a part of their organization?”
“Because she asked them to.”
“Who?”
“Sigyn.”
“Sigyn?” Steve asked as Y/N frowned.
“You're lying.” She told the woman in front of her.
“Why would I lie?”
“Why would Sigyn do any of this?”
“There is a prophecy-”
“Again with that prophecy!” Y/N rolled her eyes. “I know what it says: The völva will leave a child on a foreign land, for them to be the communicator. I know!”
“You don't understand.” Sarah told her. “That prophecy is not complete, not in the Asgardian books. Only the völva knows it…”
“And her children.” Steve finished for her.
“What are you talking about? The complete prophecy is that I would have become evil and destroyed the universe.”
“No,” she told her, “that's what Sigyn told you.”
“Then what is the real prophecy?” Tony asked this time.
“I… don't know. Only Sigyn knows.”
“How convenient.” Y/N said, crossing her arms. “Sigyn would never betray me, you are spitting lies because you got caught.” Sarah narrowed her eyes. “I'm done with this, I need to see if my sister is recovering well after she risked her life for us.”
And with that, she left.
Tony and Steve took Ingrid into a cell in the compound and decided that the kid would stay with them until they decided on what to do with the mother.
———————————-
“Do you think that she's telling the truth?” Natasha asked.
Currently, Steve, Tony, Natasha, Loki and Y/N were in a meeting room discussing the recent revelations.
“I don't know.” Steve said and at the same time Y/N said: “No.”
“Y/N, maybe this is too personal for you.”
“No, It's not.” She told the redhead. “I mean, it is, but it's not why I dont think it's the truth.”
“Then why?” Loki asked.
“Guys, we've known Sigyn for two years. She has never ever done anything suspicious or questionable. What would she gain from telling me I am the next völva?” She asked all of them. “If she wanted power, if she wanted to destroy me she wouldn't have given me the key to defeat her.”
“She does have a point.” Cap said.
“And I do like her.” Tony said and everyone deadpanned at him. “What? She's the only one who likes to sing karaoke with me!” Y/N chuckled.
“Shut up Tony.” He stuck his tongue out at her and she shook her head, smiling. “So, it's settled then.”
“Ingrid is lying?” Natasha said, more like a question.
“Ingrid is lying.” Steve stated and everyone nodded.
After the meeting was finished and everyone was leaving the room, Natasha called her.
“Y/N!” She turned around. “Would you come shopping with me? I need a new bra.”
“Uh, sure. Just let me go get changed.”
“Nah, you're fine.”
“Nat, I'm in my pajamas.”
“So what?” Y/N frowned, something was up. “Come on.”
“Alright…”
They went to the glass doors of the compound and asked for one of Tony's cars that everyone borrowed. When they got inside Y/N went to speak up but Natasha stopped her with a shake of her head.
“Ugh! My makeup looks terrible!” She said dramatically as she looked at herself in the rear view mirror. Then she looked at Y/N and the look on her face told her everything, so she nodded, subtly.
Before she started the car, Natasha skilfully turned off the tracker and looked for any signs of a mic. In no time they left the compound.
They drove for a while in circles, then changed the path a few times until they were far enough from their home.
“Spit it out.” The redhead told her friend as she had one hand on the steering wheel, the other supported her head, elbow against the window.
“I… I hate to say it but… something is not right.”
“I knew it!” Natasha said, proud of herself. “I knew you were lying back there.”
“Well I just didn't want to raise a lot of suspicions. I figured I could try to unveil the truth by myself.”
“No. We'll do it together. If Sigyn is who she says she is, we'll discover it without her knowing we ever had any suspicions of her. If she's not…”
“Then what? She's my sister Nat! I… I care about her.”
“I know Y/N/N.” She sighed. “We'll just… figure it out as we go?”
“Yeah, maybe…” She pursed her lips. “We need to know what that prophecy says, that will prove enough.”
“And then we'll see what we do.”
“Where do we start?”
“I have someone who might help us.”
——————————
“And that's pretty much all that's been happening. How are you by the way?” Y/N said with a tight smile. Strange cocked his head to one side and sighed.
“Y/N… this is… huge.”
“Yup.” Natasha said, popping the “p”.
“Do you have a way of knowing the real prophecy?” Y/N asked.
“Do I have a way of knowing an Asgardian prophecy only known by the völva? Not a great one.”
“It’ll do.” Y/N told him.
“I wouldn’t be so quick to jump Y/N.” He told her. “I need your blood and Sigyns blood to do this.”
“Got it. I’ll be back in a second.”
Then she disappeared into a white shimmer. Less than five minutes passed and she reappeared. With two red bottles, her friends noticed.
“How…?” Natasha began asking.
“From the lab.” She shrugged. The other one just nodded, deciding that it was better not to ask. “Now, what are we doing exactly?“
“I will put your and Sigyns blood on the Cauldron of the Cosmos and summon the völva’s spirit.”
“You mean my biological mother?“
“Yes…”
She was going to voice her apprehensiveness with that when she caught her reflection in a mirror and looked at herself. Her features were less innocent than when she first came here, she was hardened by a lot of things. But in a way, she was softer, she loved more, she let herself be loved more. This was her world, her family, and this could risk all of that. She decided at that moment, no matter what happened after this, she would remain soft.
“Fine, let’s do it.”

he stumbles into the room in a fit of rage, slamming the bathroom door and locking himself inside.
“loki,” you call out to him calmly, “open up, come on.” no answer. you sigh.
flicking your wrist, the door is unlocked with your magic.
“i’m coming in…” you say as you slowly push it open, trying to asses the situation. at first, you don’t see him, but then you do, and the sight makes your heart squeeze itself from all the love you feel for this grumpy man.
“love, what are you doing in the bathtub?” you ask him, trying not to laugh. he doesn’t look at you. “baby,” you say softly, knowing he can’t resist when you call him that. he slowly looks up at you and purses his lips. then, he opens his mouth to speak but no sound comes out, so he closes it again. he repeats the same action one more time before letting out a huff.
“i understand if you are upset with me-“ you let out a laugh. he furrows his brows. “what is so funny?” he asks, beginning to look offended.
you sigh before moving over to where he is and lowering yourself onto the bathtub, straddling him. you wrap your arms around his shoulders and caress the short hairs on the nape of his neck. he closes his eyes as he takes in a deep breath and seems to relax a bit as he puts his hands on your hips. then he opens them and looks at you with his beautiful puppy dog eyes.
“you are not angry?” he asks, unsure. you smile softly and shake your head. “but-“
“i definitely think you should apologize to fandral but i’m not angry at you.” at that he clenches his jaw.
“i will not apologize to that imbecile.” you bite your lip to stop yourself from grinning like a maniac. he seems to notice it and he frowns again. “why are you finding this amusing?” you let out a snort.
“i just- i find it a bit funny.”
“you find the fact that i got into a physical altercation with my brothers best friend because he was flirting with you funny?” he asks, confused and you shrug.
“yeah i just-“ you laugh again and run your hands down his soft curls. then, you tilt your head to the side as you look at him in the eyes. “i just- i thought that it was so obvious that i’m completely yours that i didn’t think something like this would bother you.” he’s taken aback by your answer because his mouth opens and then closes again like a fish out of water. so you use his silence to continue with a soft smile playing on your lips. “i could not care less if fandral was flirting with me, and to be honest, i didn’t even notice it; i was too busy looking at you.” his hands squeeze your hips and he looks at you, so unsure that you want to grab his face and pepper it with kisses. so that’s what you do. by the end of your attack, he’s pursing his lips to stop himself from smiling. “loki,” you look at him with eyes full of truth, “i love you.” you let out a small laugh and bite your lower lip as you shake your head, unbelieving of the love that he evokes in you. “i’m like- literally obsessed with you, i don’t think you understand.”
“darling-“
“no, let me.” you cut him off. “all the men and women in the world could be flirting with me and i would not even spare them a glance. why would i when i’m with the love of my life, the king of my heart?”
the god in front of you scrunches up his eyebrows and looks at you with so much vulnerability that you want to kill anyone who has ever made him feel like he’s not deserving of the love you feel for him. “i love you, i don’t care about anyone else, you’re all i think about.” he swallows harshly.
“i’m sorry, my love. i simply- i’m just scared that you will one day realize that you could do so much better than me.” at that you frown.
“better than you?” you say, upset. he looks at you and nods. “if i didn’t love you so much i would slap you right now. better than you? better than you?” you repeat, incredulous. “who could be better than you? who could know me inside and out and love and accept me like you do? who could make me feel like i’m on fire by simply looking at me? who could touch me like you do? who could ever compare to you?”
loki looks at you, speechless. you are still frowning. but then, he’s kissing you and you’re sighing into his mouth. he kisses you roughly, hands roaming your back, your ass, then back up to the back of your neck, pulling you impossibly closer to him. you let out a moan of pleasure when you feel the warmth of his tongue enter your mouth and he pulls on your hair, pulling away from you but still so close you can feel his breath on your lips.
“i don’t know what i ever did to deserve you.” you kiss him again.
“nothing loki, you never had to do anything other than being yourself.”
“you’re going to be the death of me.” you purse your lips to stop yourself from smiling but fail miserably.
“i really hope i’m not.” he lets out a laugh and kisses you again.
“i love you.”
“i love you too.” you smile and raise your eyebrows.
“what now?” he asks in fake exasperation.
“after we are done, you will apologize to fandral. perhaps even give him a hug.” he frowns.
“i will not.”
“no?” you ask him, cocking your head to side. “well then, i guess i’ll go to sleep now.” you tell him as you begin getting up. he is quick to pull you into his lap again.
“we are not done here, darling.” you smirk and speak sweetly.
“we are if you don’t promise you’ll apologize after.” he lifts his chin and takes in a deep breath. you look at him defiantly. his resolve doesn’t seem to waver, so you do the one thing you know will work.
“darling-“ he lets out a strangled moan when you circulate your hips against his growing bulge.
“yes baby?” you ask innocently. loki looks at you with a clenched jaw as you keep staring at him with doe eyes. after a bit of a staring contest, he lets out a harsh breath.
“fine. i will apologize.” he concedes. you grin and circulate your hips again, making him groan. “but i will not-“ he moans again as you begin kissing down his neck and bouncing on his clothed length. “i will not hug him.” you chuckle and bite him.
“i wasn’t expecting you to.” you tell him and then begin taking off your underwear. you were in for a long night of proving him that no one could touch you the way he did. but the next morning, it was apology time.

no words appear before me in the aftermath
you’re back.
“hey, where’s romanoff?” tony asks you. you look at him. your eyes are hollow, you don’t feel anything other than blinding pain.
everyone else gathers around you. they’re talking but their voices are merely an echo.
steve says your name. you look at him with quivering lips. that’s when he knows. you’re back but she isn’t.
salt streams out my eyes and into my ears
a knock is heard around your room. you don’t look up from the bed. you hear shuffling until a head peeks over you. it’s tony. he says your name, pity dripping from it.
“you should eat something. here,” he puts a tray on your nightstand, “i made you your favorite.” you don’t answer. he simply kisses your hair and leaves.
every single thing i touch becomes sick with sadness
you become a shell of a person. you barely eat, barely sleep, you just walk around the compound like a ghost that’s haunting it.
cause it’s all over now, all out to sea
it’s not until a month passes that it hits you. everyone is back, but she’s not. the firm ground you once walked on has been broken under your feet and the warmth you once felt is gone. tony told you he tried to bring her back when he snapped but he couldn’t. it wasn’t posible. the deal wasn’t interchangeable. he’s healing better than you would’ve expected, even though his right arm is almost useless, but he manages. they all do. steve is captain america, he needs to be strong for the people. thor is rebuilding his home, making it better. bruce is happier, he doesn’t feel like a monster anymore. the one that isn’t doing great is clint, but still, he has his family, so he mourns in silence, he hides. you once found him crying in the garden of the rebuilt compound, you tried to console him but words failed you. what could you have said? you were no better than him. you were a wounded animal, veiling your pain, trying to lick your own wounds but they were so bitter. you were so bitter.
goodbye, goodbye, goodbye. you were bigger than the whole sky, you were more than just a short time. and i’ve got a lot to pine about, i’ve got a lot to live without, i’m never gonna meet what could’ve been, would’ve been, what should’ve been you
the funeral isn’t until two months after it happens. there’s no body, so it’s a closed casket. you’re thankful for that, even though you feel guilty for it. you don’t think you could handle seeing her again. not like that.
everyone is crying. tony only invited the avengers, no one else. this is a private ceremony, it’s intimate. there’s a lot to mourn, a lot to cry about.
you stand up to the podium and clear your throat.
“natasha was a good person.” you begin. everyone is looking at you. you look at clint. he nods. “but she was also so goddamn stupid sometimes, so stubborn.” your eyes well up. you can feel it, they all can, you’re about to break. “she was the love of my life…” you trail off. you look at all these people. these people that loved her. that knew her. but no one knew her like you did. no one loved her like you. you say your goodbye in the way that everyone expected, calm, collected, the right amount of sadness, and then, before you know it, it’s done.
it’s two days later when you go back alone. you sit on the ground and touch the gravestone.
“yelena says she really likes the compound.” you smile softly. “she says it’s very cool, very future-y.” you chuckle. you know natasha loved her sister and she would find peace in knowing that she’s alright, that she’s being taken care of. you purse your lips to stop them from quivering. “i’m so mad at you natasha.” you tell the piece of stone. “i’m so goddamn mad at you.” your face scrunches up and tears begin falling from your eyes. “now we’re never going to live in a pretty house in a nice neighborhood and cook dinner every night together and laugh because the only thing you know how to cook is a peanut butter sandwich.” you chuckle through your tears. “why’d you leave me natty? we could’ve found another way- i know what you would say- there was no other way detka. but we would’ve made one. i would’ve done anything for you. now, even though you’re gone-“ a sob escapes you as you say the last word. “even now, everything i do is still for you.” you sniffle. “i do it with the hope that you’re somewhere seeing me. i need you to be somewhere nat, i need you.” winds blows on your face and you feel the tears dry up on your cheeks. “how am i gonna do this without you, huh? i’m a mess, i can barely do normal tasks. i just- i wanted to grow old with you.” you sob with your face in your hands. a while passes and sobs continue to wrack through your body in the silence of the cemetery. “and i’m never gonna see your old self. i’m never gonna meet what should’ve been you.” you have nothing else to say, so you sit in silence, caressing the tombstone. two hours pass until you decide to get up and leave. once in the compound, you head to the kitchen to grab some food and have a silent dinner in your room.
did some bird flap it’s wings over in asia? did some force take you because i didn’t pray?
grief is a complicated thing. you have always been familiar with the stages, yet since they’re happening to you you don’t really realize it.
today is a difficult day. you woke up and turned around to hug her but were quickly hit by reality when she wasn’t there for you to touch. you spent your whole morning crying. now, it’s early afternoon and you’re having something to eat in the compound’s kitchen.
“hey kid, how are you?” tony asks as he enters all sweaty, probably coming from the gym.
“hi.” you say to him. you don’t answer his question.
“how are you?” he asks again, more pointedly this time. you shrug. he says your name, almost pleading. “please talk to me. yell at me if you need to but- say something.”
“i have nothing to say.” he says your name again, firmly.
“you lost someone. hell, you didn’t just lose someone, you lost natasha. but-“ he runs his hands through his hair. “we all lost her, we can understand.”
“sorry tony, but i don’t think you can.” you tell him dryly. you know his intentions are good but he can’t really stand in front of you and say i get it. he does not. no one does. tony sighs.
“you know what? maybe you’re right.” you frown. what is he saying? “though someone might.”
“who? yelena? clint?” he rolls his eyes.
“no. a therapist.”
every single thing to come has turned into ashes. cause it’s all over, it’s not meant to be, so i’ll say words i don’t believe
turns out, tony was serious when he mentioned the therapist. you’re in her office now, sitting down and looking anywhere but at her. she says your name. you hum in response. she says your name again.
“look at me.” you do and swallow hard. “you don’t need to say anything if you don’t want to.” you smile bitterly.
“there’s nothing to say. even if i did want to say something.” you clarify. dr. lopez nods.
“do you want to have something to say?”
“i don’t… no.” you shake your head. “it’s not worth it.”
“why not?”
“nothing will be able to express what i feel.” you shrug. “and really, it’s just grief. nothing too shocking.”
“you know, just because you know it’s grief doesn’t make it easier to feel it.” you purse your lips. the therapist straightens up in her chair, almost as if she just had an idea. “what color is grief?” she asks. you frown.
“what?”
“tell me, when i say grief, what color do you see?”
“um…” you look down. a color? it couldn’t just be a color. it had to be more. “i don’t think-“
“just try.” she tells you.
“um… i guess… i guess white.”
“why?”
“because it’s… it’s not just the color, it’s like a white room, empty and with no end.” dr. lopez smiles briefly. you narrow your eyes. “that’s… that’s how i feel?” you ask her.
“you tell me.”
“i-“ you take a deep breath and shake your head. the therapist tilts her head. “can’t.” you simply say, choked up.
“i’m going to tell you something about myself.”
“you can do that?”
“if it helps my patient then yes, i can.” you purse your lips and nod. “when i was eighteen, my best friend and i got into a car accident.” you look at her. “she died.” you swallow. “for a year i didn’t talk about it. didn’t even say her name. you know why?” you shake your head even though you have your suspicions. “because talking about it would make it real. and if it was real then i was going to feel a lot of pain, pain i wasn’t sure i could handle feeling.” you shake your head.
“no, i- i get where you’re going with this but i know i can’t handle that pain. i’ll die.”
“do you really think that?”
“if i don’t i’ll kill myself.” you tell her. she looks at you. “i’m sorry, i didn’t mean to say that out loud.”
“you don’t need to apologize for grieving.” you look at her. then you look down, your hands are shaking. you look up again with scrunched up eyebrows.
“is that what this is?” you ask her, a tear falling from your eye. she cocks her head to the side, waiting for you to explain. “it doesn’t- it doesn’t feel like grief. it feels as if someone is constantly squeezing my heart.” tears are now falling freely down your cheeks. you try to wipe them away but they’re too many. “and the worst part is i don’t want to get over it. i want to keep feeling it, it’s all i have left of her.” dr lopez says your name and you look at her through blurry eyes.
“that’s actually really beautiful. grief is love. it’s all the love we can’t give them.”
“i don’t want it. it shouldn’t- it’s not fair.” you sob.
“it isn’t.” she tells you. “and that’s the thing about grief. you say it shouldn’t be like this but grief fights you and tells you well, it is. that’s why it’s so hard.” you blink, sniffle and shrug.
“i’m still never going to get over it.”
“you probably won’t.” she tells you. you look at her.
“aren’t you supposed to tell me that everything is going to be fine?”
“well, everything is going to be fine. that doesn’t mean that you’ll get over it.” you frown. she smiles softly. “a loss like this one, it’s more like you learn to live with it. you don’t necessarily get over it. but you do feel better, and you find hope.” hope. you found hope already. it was her. the doctor seems to read your mind because she gestures to you with her head. “why don’t you tell me about her?” you look at her and furrow your brows.
“i- she… she was….” you sigh.
“it’s okay, you know what? why don’t i ask you?”
“okay.”
“what was her favorite color?” you smile softly.
“yellow. she said it reminded her of sunflowers, her favorite.” you chuckle.
“what is it?” she asks.
“after i found out i kind of started giving her a sunflower every day… to remind her that- that they were her favorite thing and… and she was mine.” you purse your lips to stop them from quivering. you’re once again on the verge of crying. ugh.
“that’s really romantic.”
“yeah well, we weren’t together at the time i was just obsessed with her.” you laugh through your tears. “after we got together she would always make fun of me for it. but i knew she secretly loved it.” dr lopez smiles.
“and what did you like most about her?”
“oh i- i can’t choose. she was just- perfect. but i think her heart- yeah, her heart was just so good. i don’t think i’ve ever met someone who cared so much about others like her.” you say. then you grin. “she was also terrified of cockroaches. like, she was the most badass person ever but if she saw a cockroach she would lose it.” you laugh and so does the therapist. then, suddenly, you begin sobbing. heart-wrenching sobs escape you as you cover your face with your hands. “i’m so- so sorry.” you tell her. “i just- what i’m feeling i want to tell her. she would be the one to console me and now i need something else to make me feel better because she’s gone. i can’t believe that she- it should’ve been me.” dr lopez says your name firmly.
“she made her choice.”
“no! she was just a better fighter than me! i could’ve been the one to jump and she would still be here.”
“but would you want her to feel the pain you’re feeling now?” you look up at her, shocked. you had never thought of that.
“i- of course not. but i just- she deserved to live a long, beautiful life. she deserved it more than me.”
“i know you feel like that, but that’s not true.” she tells you. “what you truly deserved, both of you, was to live a long, beautiful life together. but because of circumstance, you can’t. but you can still live that life.”
“i don’t want to! i don’t want to live a life without her!”
“then, at least, live it for her.”
you leave the session feeling something strange in your chest. realization perhaps. an epiphany of some sorts. she would want you to live this life fully. even though she’s not here, you know she wouldn’t want to see you broken like you are now. and you think, maybe i’ll do this one last act of love for her.
that night, you have dinner with the rest of the team. wanda is there, and you realize that you haven’t asked her how she is.
“hey, wanda.” you call after her before she leaves. “could i talk to you for a second?”
“yes.” she tells you. you two walk over to the balcony and sit down.
“i never asked you, how are you?” she looks at you with a questioning gaze.
“i’m…” she trails off.
“i’m sorry about vision.” you tell her. she looks at you.
“i’m sorry about natasha.”
“thank you.” you say. for a bit you’re both silent. until you speak up. “i wish there was a way for us to tell them that we won, that it wasn’t for nothing.”
“they know.” she says. you swallow hard and look at her.
“you think so?”
“yeah.” she smiles softly.
“how do you… keep living life?” you ask her. she tilts her head at you. “i mean like… how do you keep going forward without him?”
“vis once told me: what is grief if not love persevering?” you sniffle. wanda looks at you and puts a hand on your shoulder. “he was right. it is.”
“where do you put that love?” you ask her, crying now.
“you keep it inside you, and you use it to never forget them.”
you end up the chat by hugging, where in the middle of it you tell her that you’re grateful to have her as a friend, and she says the same thing.
goodbye, goodbye, goodbye. you were bigger than the whole sky, you were more than just a short time. and i’ve got a lot to pine about, i’ve got a lot to live without, i’m never gonna meet what could’ve been, would’ve been, what should’ve been you
the first time you feel it you’re training with wanda and bucky. wanda makes him fall with his magic and you laugh. for the first time since she’s been gone you laugh an honest laugh. you’ve been going to therapy for a month now and it’s helping. it doesn’t replace her, nothing ever will. but it helps with the anxiety and the soul crushing pain.
you miss her, everyday you miss her more and more. they say that time heals, but as of now, time is making you need her more than ever. still, you laughed.
“that’s not fair, you punk!” bucky yells and wanda laughs.
“it’s called being strategic.” she tells him.
“it’s called cheating.” he tells her matter-of-factly. then he turns to you. “what do you think?”
“um…” you say. he raises his eyebrows. “i think it’s called being strategic.” you shrug.
“you two punks are siding with each other? fine! see if i care.” you and wanda look at each other and you both burst out laughing. shortly after, bucky joins in too. you’re laughing with them, you’re laughing with them and suddenly the world doesn’t seem so heavy on your shoulders. you are still in a lot of pain, you are still mourning, and honestly, you don’t think you will ever stop. but you’re laughing wholeheartedly, and that’s when you feel it. perhaps you will get better. perhaps, you just found hope.

you hated stark parties. they were loud, messy, annoying and did you mention loud?
being an introvert was a difficult task at the avengers compound, where these sort of events were being held every two weeks.
sighing, you gulp down the last of your drink. today you chose a coke, since you didn’t want to get drunk and embarrass yourself like the others always did.
“having fun?”
“no!” you say over enthusiastically. natasha snorts and shakes her head at you from behind the bar. she looks stunning, wearing a tight black dress that hugs her body perfectly and her red hair loose and wild. she never goes heavy on the make up, you noticed. not that she needs it, she’s breathtakingly beautiful without it.
“you should at least dance to one song, maybe you’ll even enjoy it.” she says, pulling you out of your not so friendly thoughts of her.
“i refuse.”
“don’t act like a petulant child.”
“don’t act like my mother.” natasha smirks. god that smirk. “if you call yourself mommy, i’m leaving.” the redhead shrugs.
“you handed it to me on a silver platter.”
“whatever.” you roll your eyes.
“i’ll have a manhattan, please.” a man slides up next to you on a barstool. natasha nods and begins preparing his drink. you don’t fail to notice the man’s lascivious look as he stares at her. it makes your blood boil. you know she hates when men sexualize her. and, truth be told, you hate it too. maybe not always for the right reasons, but most of the time they are. natasha romanoff is the best person in the entire world. she is also your favorite person in the entire world. she’s super smart, she’s so funny you almost peed yourself an embarrassing amount of times in front of her, she’s brave, she’s so goddamn brave you sometimes wish she wasn’t so she wouldn’t put herself at risk. but that’s the thing about natasha, she does that because she cares. she cares so much about everyone, and contrary to what people would think, it’s not because she feels guilty for her past, but because she’s good. her heart is so good, so kind. and she’s strong, the strongest. you know what she went through and still, she remained good. that takes a hell of a lot strength. and yes, she’s hot. she’s so fucking hot sometimes you can’t believe she’s even real. but she’s so much more than that. she’s your best friend, and the woman that you-
“thanks, gorgeous.” the man’s voice brings you back to reality and you look at him, hoping you’re shooting lasers out of your eyes and burning him. natasha simply nods and looks at you from the corner of her eye. you know what that look means, you know what every look means. if he tries something, i’m gonna shoot him.
you purse your lips to stop yourself from laughing loudly, your anger long forgotten when she enters your line of sight.
the man clears his throat, trying to gain her attention.
“so, you from around here?”
“no.” she tells him. then, she gives him a fake smile. “if you don’t mind, i’m pretty busy.” he does not seem to take the hint, so you turn to him.
“she’s asking you to leave.”
“and who are you?”
“one of tony stark’s closest friends. you wouldn’t want to be black listed for his parties for eternity, would you?” the man widens his eyes a bit. “yeah, i thought so. now, leave.” you shoo him away with a gesture of your hand, almost dismissively and he, thank every god that exists, gets up and leaves.
“my knight in shining armor.” natasha tells you, smirking. “you saved me.” you wish she was right. you wish you had done it to save her instead of yourself. but, to be frank, you didn’t. of course you don’t want her to feel uncomfortable, but you know she can handle herself just fine. the one who couldn’t stand it was you. you are an idiot. an idiot who’s hopelessly in love with her best friend.
“sorry, i know you can defend yourself. i just-“
“you just what?” she raises an eyebrow. you know that expression. it means she’s challenging you to tell her.
“i just hate men.” for a second, she looks almost disappointed. but you probably imagined that.
“yeah.” she nods. “i’m gonna head to the ladies room.” and then she leaves.
you sigh and run your hands over your face. natasha romanoff is going to be the death of you. but oh, what a sweet death.
“when are you gonna tell her?” sam’s voice makes you lift your head up.
“tell who what?”
“tell natasha that you love her.”
“i’ve already told her that a million times.”
“no.” he shakes his head. “that you love her love her, that you wanna kiss her.” you scoff.
“never. oh and also, could you keep it quiet? what if she hears you?”
“then finally you will both admit that you’re in love with one another and stop giving each other longing glances across every single room you’re in.”
“i don’t give her longing glances.” you lie. of course you do.
“uh-huh.”
“whatever samantha. don’t care, didn’t ask. plus i don’t even know if she likes girls.”
“she likes you.”
“as a friend.”
“you are so goddamn stubborn…” he begins saying, but his voice fades into the background when you see her. your breathing stops. she’s dancing. she’s swaying her hips and smiling and she looks so fucking angelic you want to pinch yourself because, surely, this must be a dream. but then, your heart drops to your stomach. he’s touching her. he has his fucking hands on her hips as he dances behind her and she isn’t pushing him away. you feel sick to your stomach. “hey, you there?” sam waves his hand in front of you. “hey…?” he trails off. then he probably follows your line of sight because he ohs in understanding. he says your name and pity drips from it. “they’re just dancing.”
“yeah.” you say, choked up. you hate that seeing her with someone else makes your heart burn from the pain. but it does, and it hurts so much. it was the first time since you admitted to yourself that you were in love with her that you saw her with another person. a man. stupid men and their stupid hands. tears well up in your eyes, but you won’t cry. you refuse to cry. not for love. never.
“what are you doing?” sam asks you as you walk all the way around the bar and crouch under it. “don’t.” he tells you when he sees what’s in your hands. you look at him dead in the eye and gulp down the whiskey straight from the bottle.
\\\\
“woo! this is so fun!” you shout over the music. you’ve been dancing for almost an hour now and you were most definitely drunk. you don’t even notice sam and natasha calling your name.
“what are you doing? you hate drinking.” the redhead frowns.
“maybe it’s time for someone to go to bed.”
“yes, nat. go to bed.” you tell her.
“no, whiskey straight out of the bottle, i’m talking about you.” you laugh at sam’s long nickname but then you pout when you sway and almost fall to the floor. “you wanna take care of it?” he asks the spy and she nods.
“i’ll take her to bed.”
“and what will we do there?” you ask suggestively. natasha looks at you unimpressed.
“you, lay down. me, scold you.”
“are you gonna spank me?” you smirk. she swallows hard. uh oh, she’s mad. you raise your hands innocently in front of you and she rolls her eyes.
“let’s go.” you want to protest but you know better than that. begrudgingly you begin following her, but stop when the room starts to spin. natasha must notice it, because she turns around and puts her arm around your waist and your arm around her shoulders.
the walk to your room is silent, except for your giggles. you don’t really know what you’re giggling about, but she’s here so it makes sense to do so.
she helps you lay down on your bed and takes off your shoes. as she does so, you look at her. god, you love her so much. and god, you are doomed for life.
“you’re never gonna love me.” you blurt out. she looks at you and frowns.
“what?”
“you’re never gonna love me.” you tell her again, pouting. she waits until she’s tucked you in the bed to answer.
“of course i love you.”
“no.” you frown. “you don’t.”
“what are you talking about?”
“i’m so drunk.” you say out of the blue.
“come on, on your side.” you do as she says and position yourself on your side, so you don’t drown in your own vomit and die.
“you don’t want me to die.” you slur, almost asleep now.
“of course i don’t want you to die!” you open your eyes and look at her. she’s kneeling next to you on the bed and sorting out some pills for tomorrow morning. you’re most likely going to need them. she then puts them on your nightstand next to your water bottle.
“but you don’t love me.” you say again. she looks at you, frowning. you stare at her. her green eyes, so kind. her cheeks, you want to squeeze them between your fingers and call her cute. her eyebrows, so perfect. and her lips, god, her lips. they look so soft. you bet they’re warm to the touch. so kissable.
“you’re so beautiful, natty.”
she looks taken aback by that, but she quickly recovers and smiles softly.
“don’t try to sweet talk me into not being mad at you.”
“i’m not!” you protest. “you can be mad at me but you’re still the prettiest girl in the world.”
“you’re drunk.”
“and you’re beautiful.”
she says your name softly with a smile on her face.
“get some rest, detka.” her hand is softly combing through your hair.
“i love it when you call me detka. did i pronounce that right? probably not.” you mumble. she chuckles.
“you pronounced it right.”
“nat…” you say.
“what?”
“i love you.”
“i love you too.”
“no.” you pout. “don’t lie. it’s not nice.” she stops caressing your hair and frowns.
“what is it with you today? of course i love you.”
“no, nat. i love you love you.”
“i love you love you too.” she tells you.
“i love you like i wanna kiss you love you not you’re my best friend love you.” she blinks at you. for a bit she doesn’t say anything. then she briefly shakes her head and sighs.
“you’re drunk. you should get some rest.” your heart breaks. she doesn’t love you like that. you should’ve known. now you’ve ruined everything. tears begin welling up in your eyes and it isn’t long before you’re crying.
“hey, hey- don’t cry.” she tells you as she wipes your tears with her thumb.
“i told you you didn’t love me.” she says your name again and takes a deep breath.
“you’re not gonna remember this but- if you do, we’ll talk in the morning.”
and then she leaves. tonight you are crying yourself to sleep.
\\\\
you open your eyes and stretch your limbs. then, you sit up and immediately groan. the most violent headache is currently splitting your mind into two. what possessed you to drink so fucking much? oh, natasha romanoff and her stupid beautiful self. and seeing her with another man, that definitely didn’t help.
you tsk and roll your eyes.
what even happened last night after you got hammered? how did you even get up to your room? did sam bring you here? did nat? no, she was too busy with someone else.
a knock on your door pulls you out of your thoughts and you tell the person to come in, and even though it comes out more as a mumble, they seem to understand, because the door opens. there, standing in all her glory, is natasha romanoff herself, accompanied by a small brown bag and a coffee, you notice after a bit.
“hey.” she greets you from the doorway.
“hi.”
“i brought you breakfast. figured you might wanna eat before taking an aspirin.”
“thank you.” you tell her and she nods awkwardly. then, she approaches you and sits down on the bed in front of you while your back is against the headboard. “did sam bring me here last night?”
“nope. i did.”
“oh… thanks natty.” she swallows and gives you a small smile that actually resembles more a wince than anything else. weird.
“so… did i do something embarrassing? please tell me i didn’t try to strip on top of a table or something.” she chuckles and shakes her head.
“you didn’t try to strip.”
“but did i do other embarrassing things?” she opens her mouth to speak but then, surprising you, she pauses and abruptly shakes her head. oh no. what did you do that is making her act so strange? you try to remember. you saw her dancing with that man and decided to get drunk. she says she was the one who brought you to your bedroom so something must’ve happened here. did you puke all over her or something? or even worse, did you admit your feelings? your eyes widen. oh no. oh no, oh no, oh no no no. that’s exactly what you did, you goddamn idiot! you remember now. you told her you loved her! you told her you wanted to kiss her! of course she’s being weird!
“nat-“
“you don’t have to say anything.” she cuts you off.
“i really wish that was the case cause i’m really fucking embarrassed but- i need to say something.”
“we all say dumb shit when we’re drunk.”
“i said the dumbest shit i could’ve ever said.” you deadpan. for a second you see a flash of hurt in her eyes, but it’s gone as soon as it appears. could it be that she- no, no, she didn’t feel that way about you.
“nat-“ she puts her hand up.
“don’t need to say anything, i’ll just forget it happened.”
“but nat-“ she says your name again, almost begging.
“please, just drop it. i get it, you didn’t mean what you said. it’s okay.” you open your mouth to say something but then you close it and frown. did she think you didn’t mean what you said? that’s why she wanted you to stop talking about it? because she wanted you to mean it?
“i-“ you look at her with wide eyes. this is it. you’re gonna tell her in the most beautiful, poetic way that you- “i hate men.” what? the redhead frowns. “i meant, i- ugh- i hate men but i especially hate them when they’re dancing with you.”
“what?” she asks now, seemingly confused.
“i saw you dancing with that guy last night. i got- ugh i’m so dumb- i got jealous. i got jealous cause i’m in love with you and… and i want to be the one who dances with you like that.” natasha does not say a word. you simply continue, because of course once you’ve started you can’t stop. “i’m so in love with you nat, i- you are literally my favorite person in the world. you are so smart and funny and kind and strong and- you can totally slap me and never talk to me again but if this is the last time we’re gonna speak i want you to know that- that i love you with my whole heart and i will always love you.” for the first time since you’ve met her, natasha romanoff is speechless. you don’t know if it’s because she’s desperately in love with you too or she’s simply thinking of different ways to kill you and get rid of your body. you really hope it’s the former. “um- could you- could you say something, please?” she blinks but still, nothing. god, you broke her. “nat- i’m sorry, i shouldn’t have-“ and she’s kissing you. natasha’s lips are on yours and you’re in heaven. or something above heaven because this is simply too perfect, too beautiful. she moves against you, softly, so softly, as if she’s afraid to hurt you. your arms are glued to your body and hers are too. almost as if you were scared to break the spell if you touched each other. the kiss is gentle, sweet, but it sends a shock through your body. you’ve never felt like that. kissing was simply not that interesting to you, but now you understand why people in romantic movies do it so often. natasha’s kiss is healing every broken bone inside your body, it’s like a cure, fixing, mending. but unfortunately, it ends all too soon. when she pulls away you let out a soft whine and she chuckles, almost making fun of you. you lay your forehead on hers and you both breathe in deeply. then, you open your eyes to find that she’s already looking at you.
“so, does this mean you love me too?”
“oh no, that was a platonic kiss.”
“natasha!” you whine and she shuts you up by placing another kiss on your lips.
“of course i love you detka. i’ve loved you for so long.”
“i wasn’t even sure if you liked girls.” you tell her as you lift your hand and caress her face.
“i wasn’t either but then…”
“then…” you raise your eyebrows.
“this beautiful girl showed up in my life and i couldn’t help but fall in love with her.” your heart takes a leap and you have to bite your lip to stop yourself from grinning like a maniac.
“what an amazing girl.” you tell her.
“the best.”
“i love you.” you kiss her again. “i’m so happy i think i’m gonna vomit rainbows.” natasha lets out a laugh.
“don’t vomit on me or i’m kicking your ass.” you pout at her.
“you wouldn’t.” she looks at you, serious for a moment. then, she breaks into a smile.
“i wouldn’t.” you laugh breathily and purse your lips.
“i can’t believe i started this whole confession by saying i hate men.” the redhead laughs.
“i can’t believe you said that either.”
“hey!” her shoulders shake as she laughs. she looks so angelic when she’s happy. you sigh softly, dreamily. you might hate men, but you sure as hell don’t hate natasha romanoff.

“F.R.I.D.A.Y call them to the designated meeting room.”
Five minutes passed and they began to fill the room.
“Tony what is it?” Bruce asked sleepily since it was four in the morning.
“Yeah Stark, what is the matter?” Pietro asked, annoyed. “I was dreaming about Penelope Cruz and then you woke me up!”
“Yeah yeah, save all of your complaints. I know.” Tony dismissed everyone's groan with a movement of his hand. “This is important.”
“Spit it out then.” Natasha told him.
“You remember the Sky Breakers? The ones who two years ago kidnapped Y/N?” Everyone nodded, frowning in confusion. They were all dead, most of them at least. “Well, they're back.”
“Is this why Y/N nor Loki aren't here and Sigyn is?”
“Yeah.” He nodded and looked at Cap, expectantly.
“What do we know of them now?”
“When they all… died in that building they kind of didn't die. All of them I mean.” Everyone looked more confused than before. “We know that Sarah, Y/Ns friend, Ingrid, escaped. What we did not know was that her parents escaped too.”
“How do you know this for sure?” Steve asked, serious.
“Back then… we couldn't keep count of how many died, so I programmed our drones and satellites to notify me if one of the faces that were registered as part of the group appeared. And they did. And not only that,” he tried to brace the others for what was coming next with an apologetic expression,”their base is here in New York.”
“What? Where?” Most of them asked.
“Everyone! Calm down!” Steve exclaimed, trying to keep it together too. This could be another war, and once again he was in the position of the chosen one, the one who had to keep his calm and by doing so, helping everyone else keep their calm too. He had to keep it together, no matter how truly worried he was. “We need a plan.”
“What kind of plan?”
“No killing, we need them alive. We can't risk this thing spreading more than it already has. We need to cut it from its roots, and they seem to be it.” Everyone nodded, determination seeping into their souls as he told them the plan and revised the plans of the structure where they were. It consisted of everyone making it easier for Wanda and Sigyn, in replacement of Y/N, because no one wanted Y/N to face this situation again, to mind control the people working there and make them leave and forget about it. Then the rest of the team had to take in the innocents that were caught in the middle of it, “The enhanced” they called them, and take them to a safe house as Oscar and Oksana were taken into custody.
After the meeting they all went to gear up and prepare themselves for a good fight.
                                                 ---------------------------
Y/N woke up and immediately felt sick to her stomach, as if her body already knew something terrible had happened. Perhaps it wasnt that, but the fact that Loki wasn't next to her and the air seemed heavy.
She got up from the bed and went to put on some pants and then to open the door. She was taken aback in surprise when at the other side of it was a very concerned Loki.
“Loki? What is it?”
“Its Sigyn.”
                                            ---------------------------
“Are you fucking kidding me?!” Y/N was pacing the waiting room of the hospital wing of the compound as Natasha and Loki were trying to calm her down. “Are you fucking kidding me?!” She repeated again, directing her anger at Steve and Tony.
“Y/N we-”
“You put my sister in danger without telling me!” The both men stepped back, they had never seen Y/N so livid. “You excluded me from a fight that was mine! You had no right!”
“Y/N, you once faced these people and it ended in a mess. We didn't want you to go through that again.” Steve said, calmly.
“That was not your decision to make! It was mine!”
As Tony and Steve were trying to calm the young woman down, one of the nurses approached them.
“Excuse me,” he said, “I have news on the patient.”
Everyone turned to him. Y/Ns eyes were wide. She hated this, she hated Tony and Steve for lying to her and she hated Sigyn for putting herself at risk.
“What news?” She asked, trying to put on a brave face. The man stood there, nervous. “Is she dead?”
Steve, Tony, Loki and Natasha all looked at her as if she had grown two heads. Where was this coldness coming from?
“No!” The nurse said, alarmed. “She's in a coma, we don't know when she'll wake up… or if.”
“Fucking fantastic.” She smiled sarcastically and dropped herself on a chair. The rest of them looked at each other with questioning eyes. They knew Y/N cared about Sigyn, they knew she considered her a sister, apart from the fact that she was her actual blood related sister, but they had never seen her like this, so hopeless, so bitter.
“Y/N/N,” Natasha began, as Tony and Steve talked to the nurse and doctor and Loki went to grab her a glass of water. “What is it?”
Y/N looked at her friend, her family, and her lower lip began trembling.
“Nat, I can't do this again…”
“Do what again?” The redhead asked, confused, but was interrupted.
“Here, darling.” Loki told her as he stood in front of her with the glass of water. The other men also approached them.
Y/N ran her hand over her face and sighed, a few tears escaping her eyes.
“Nothing.” She stood up and went to grab the glass from Loki's hand and downed it in less than five seconds. “Nothing.” She mumbled under her breath.
The next few days, Y/N stood by Sigyns side, reading, singing and crying to her. She was avoiding the team, even Loki, by hiding in the hospital wing next to her sister.
Today was no different, except for the fact that Natasha had had enough of her icing them out.
“I'm gonna go talk to her.”
“You can talk all you want, she's not going to answer.” Loki said, defeatedly. He missed his beautiful, chirpy Y/N and he didn't know what to do to bring her back. He wasn't even sure of what was happening, not even in the worst times she had pushed him away. Why was she doing it now?
“I can be very persuasive.”
And that's how she found herself knocking on Sigyns door, knowing that her friend was on the other side of it. When no one answered, she opened it.
“Hey… I brought you a sandwich.”
“I'm not hungry.” She mumbled as she stared at the woman on the bed.
“Y/N/N, you need to eat. You haven't been eating more than an apple a day. When Sigyn wakes up you know she's gonna scold you.” Y/N clenched her teeth and Natasha realized quickly: that was a mistake.
“We don't know if she'll wake up.” She said harshly. The red head sighed.
“You're right. Still, she would want you to take care of yourself. You know that.” She looked up from the floor and nodded slowly. Win for Natasha.
She ate in silence, and when she was finished she got up from the chair to throw the wrapping paper into the trash can, making a loud noise in the otherwise quiet space.
“I don't have anything to say, Natasha.” Natasha. Harsh.
The red head shrugged.
“You don't need to say anything.”
“So, why are you here then?”
“I wanted to see how my best friend was, is that so unbelievable?” Y/N swallowed thickly.
“N-no.”
“Okay, good.” She nodded.
A while passed and Y/N looked at her.
“I'm sorry for calling you Natasha, Nat.” She smiled.
“Don't sweat it Y/N/N.” She bumped their shoulders together and they both smiled softly at the other. Then she got serious. “But I do need to ask you, and if you don't want to answer I can drop it but, what did you mean before? When you said you couldn't do it again. Were you talking about losing your family?”
The other one sighed, she was expecting that.
“Yes.” Natasha nodded. “But not only that.”
“What else?“ She asked patiently. She knew this was hard for her friend, even though it had been two years since it happened, it was still a traumatic and very painful thing for her.
“Don’t let this ruin your life.”
“What?” The redhead asked, confused.
“That’s what my brother told me when he was in the hospital. Such a stupid thing to say.” She laughed bitterly.
“What do you mean when he was in the hospital? I thought your family died in that car accident.”
“They did, most of them. All of them except for him.” Y/N looked at her, with an almost apologetic smile. “I never told you guys this because it’s too much. Everything about it is just too much.”
“It’s okay Y/N/N, I’m not angry. I understand.”
“I was at a piano lesson when I got the call. I’m sorry, the person on the phone told me. I don’t even remember what went through my mind, I just ran to the hospital and there he was: on a bed, so hurt he didn’t even look like him.” Tears were already staining her cheeks and she didn’t even bother cleaning them, there were too many. “Three days I sat on that stupid chair next to him, three days in which he didn’t speak, he didn’t even look at me, not because he couldn’t but because he didn’t want to. What was there to say? We had lost everything and he knew somehow, I know that he knew, that I was going to lose him too. It’s like he wanted to make it easier for me.” She sobbed with her face in her hands and Natasha, crying too, caressed her back, trying to bring her some sort of comfort. “Then on the last day, when we both knew that that was it, he told me: don’t let this ruin your life.” Y/N looked at her friend with bloodshot eyes. “How could I not Nat?” She burst out crying again at that question. “And now I’m here again, waiting to see if my sister wakes up. And I can’t do this again, I can’t lose someone else, I won’t be able to take it.”
“Y/N…” For the first time, Natasha Romanoff was speechless. What could she have said in that moment that could’ve made it better for her? Y/N was right, there was only so much one could take. But Natasha needed her friend to stay where she was, she needed her to survive no matter what, so for the first time ever since they knew each other, she uttered a lie. “She will be okay, she’ll wake up. I promise.” And god, did she hope that she wouldn’t have to break that promise.
                                               -------------------------
Bip, bip, bip. The incessant sound of the machine was driving Y/N crazy, but it's better than no sound at all, she thought. Sighing, she accommodated Sigyn's pillows under her head so her neck wouldn't be sore if she woke up, then she went outside and sat on a chair in the waiting room.
It had been a day since the talk she had with Natasha, in which she told her, before she left, that she needed to talk to Loki, that icing him out was hurting the both of them. It was true, she knew. That's why she told F.R.I.D.A.Y to call him to the hospital wing, where she was now, waiting nervously for his arrival. Would he be mad at her? Would he even want to talk to her?
“Hey…” His voice made a warmth appear in her chest. She looked up at him and smiled softly.
“Hey,” she uttered shyly, “how are you?”
Loki cocked his head to the side and frowned.
“I'm… worried.” Guilt began forming in her stomach like a knot she couldn't untie. She was a terrible girlfriend. Maybe Loki would be better off without her.
“I know Loki, I'm so sorry.” She told him as tears began forming in her eyes. He immediately sat down next to her and grabbed her face between his hands to wipe them away. “I've been horrible to you! I've been ignoring you completely, icing you out and you should hate me!”
“Darling-”
“No, please. Be mad at me, I deserve it.” She cut him off, very upset.
Loki tried to find the anger he had been feeling these past few days, not at her directly, but at everything and tried to make it resurface again. He tried for a few seconds, but looking at her beautiful love, worried for him, with tear stained cheeks and those beautiful pleading eyes he couldn't muster any of it. So he smiled softly and caressed both her cheeks.
“My love, I can't be angry at you. I understand.”
“But Loki, I don't deserve it.” She whined.
“You have stood by me since the moment we first met, who else would deserve it more than you?”
Y/N jumped into his lap and gave him the tightest hug she had ever given him.
“I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry.” She kept repeating.
“Darling, it's okay. I'm glad you're with me now.” He pulled away a bit to look at her. “Just… talk to me, scream at me even if you need it, but don't… don't shut me out.”
“I promise I won't do it again.” She sniffled. “I love you. So much. And I think that's why I've been acting like this.” She grabbed his face between her hands and looked at him, as if it were the first time. “I can't lose you Loki, I've lost so many people but… not you. God, please, I can't lose you.”
He felt a pang of pain in his chest. Two years ago, when Sigyn appeared, he had seen her memories. He knew everything that had happened to her and she trusted him with it; he understood why she was so triggered by this situation, he understood why she was pushing him away. She was so scared of losing him that she couldn't even face him. He felt the same way about her, he could handle losing anything, but not her. So he kissed her, softly and passionately all at once and nodded as they pulled away, a silent promise of forever.
                                            ------------------------------
“Come on Sig, wake up.” Y/N sighed when the woman in front of her didn't move. “I brought you some of those magazines that you love.” She smiled at her. “If you were awake I would mock you for liking them and you would purse your lips like you always do when you're offended.” She chuckled softly at the image. “You would tell me: they're amazing Y/N! They contain everything, what's not to love? And I would roll my eyes and huff, knowing that deep down you could never get upset with me.” She frowned. “And I could never get upset with you.” She held her hand and softly caressed it. “Cause you're my sister.”
The silence that followed that statement was heavy, so heavy she felt like it was hard to breathe.
Right when she was about to get up and leave she felt a hand grab her arm. She turned around abruptly with wide eyes.
“Y/N…”
“Sigyn!” The woman tried to get up but she pushed her back onto the bed. “No, no. You need to rest.”
“But-”
“No buts.” And then, in awe, Y/N grabbed her face between her hands and looked at her, giddy. “You're awake.”
Sigyn smiled softly.
“I'm awake.”
                                             ----------------------------
“You don't need to do this, Y/N.”
“I know Steve. I'll be fine, don't worry.”
“Alright, let's go.”
Taking a deep breath, Y/N entered the doors of the questioning room where Oksana and Oscar Muller were handcuffed in with her friend. It had been two days since Sigyn had woken up and all that time that she was in a coma they both had been in custody of The Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D. But now it was time to get some answers.
“Well hello, Miss Y/L/N… It's been a while.”
“Save it.” Y/N cut Oscar off. “How did you escape?”
“When?” He asked, almost wickedly. Steve sighed and she put a hand on his shoulder.
“When I killed your whole building of people, but not you apparently.”
The man let out a laugh, truly seeming to enjoy her admission.
“Will you look at that?” He told his wife who smiled just as wickedly as him.
“Look, we already found your base in New York and since we found the papers in that gray box hidden inside the wall, we can also assume we've also found any other base or plans that you had.” Steve said, serious. “So you better talk.”
The couple looked a bit affected by that but hid it quickly.
“We have nothing to say to you.” Oksana told them laughing and Oscar joined her too.
“Alright… Y/N?”
“Digging up the box, we also found the names of your enemies, the people you stole the idea from, and I think they would love to get payback, don't you?”
At that, the couple seemed to sober up.
“You are bluffing.”
“Are we?” She asked, smirking.
Oscar and his wife looked at each other, seemingly having a silent discussion. She then looked at Steve and Y/N and opened her mouth to speak.
“Don’t…” Her husband told her, looking almost… scared?
“It’s our daughter-“
“Oksana, no.” He interrupted her, begging at that point.
“Ingrid.” She finished anyway.
“Sarah?” Y/N asked. They both looked at each other. “What about her? She’s on the run.”
“She is not.” Oscar spoke now. “She is merely hiding… and waiting.”
“Waiting for what?” Steve asked this time.
“Waiting for you to let your guard down and destroy you and everything in her path.”
“We are not evil,” Oksana said, “we are simply concerned parents who would do anything for their daughter. Including going to jail for the rest of our lives.”
“But she must be stopped.” Oscar finished for her.
“But you founded the organization, you created the Sky Breakers.” Y/N said, furrowing her brows.
“At the beginning, yes, we did. But then she took our power, our authority.”
“She was the one who kidnapped you, she just forced us to pretend that we had done it.” The woman said on the verge of crying.
“Why would she do that?” Steve asked, confused.
“Because she’s planning something bigger and she needs us to look like the real bad guys.”
Oscar looked concerned as he said the next words.
“She is coming, and you better be prepared.”
                                             ------------------------
“We found her.” Tony said as Steve stood by his side.
“Who?” Wanda asked.
“Sarah slash Ingrid. She’s in Spain. She was found by one of the drones.”
“Spain…” Y/N widened her eyes. Of course! Sarah had told her many times, back when they were normal friends who talked about normal stuff, that she loved the country and that she dreamed of living there. “We need to go right now, before she escapes.”
“Yes.” Steve agreed with her. “Everyone gear up. This is a fight for a whole team.”
                                            --------------------------
While getting prepared for the mission, and as she boarded the quinjet and sat down on a window, Y/N thought of Sarah. How genuine she seemed sometimes, how fun it was to spend time with her, how much she was beginning to care for her before everything was ruined, before she ruined everything. Was she truly so naive? There must’ve been some signs. There must’ve been, she repeated in her head.
She was so caught up in her thoughts that she didn’t realize that Wanda was calling her.
“You okay?” She asked, frowning in worry.
“Yeah, just… thinking.”
“About?” Y/N shrugged.
“Nothing important.”
“Nothing important…” The redhead repeated, narrowing her eyes. “I can tell this is hard for you.”
“It’s not.” She lied.
“Okay,” Wanda conceded, “just know that it’s okay if it is.”
After that she stood up and left her alone.
                                         ---------------------------
“Alright, just as we agreed before.” Steve told the team through the comms. “Team Sam enters from the windows on the ceiling, team Bucky through the back doors, team Tony through the side door and my team enters through the front doors.”
“Copy that.” The leader of every team said.
“Everyone,” Cap said before entering, “on my command. Now!”
Everyone stormed into the big warehouse, on the outskirts of Barcelona, ready for a very hostile party to greet them, but were all surprised when the party consisted of a very scared woman and an equally scared child.
“What the hell?” Bucky said, frowning.
“Everybody, careful! This could be a trap.”
“It doesn't seem like one,” Tony said. “F.R.I.D.A.Y already scanned the place. It's just her.”
“So much for a good fight.” Clint said under his breath and Nat hit him on the chest.
“Ingrid Muller, you are under arrest.” Steve told her and got closer to her, surprised that she didn't put up a fight.
“Wait!” She said as they were taking her out of the place and onto the quinjet. “Careful with my son, please.” He nodded and motioned for Y/N to grab the child, who was probably three or four years old.
She did as told and soon enough they were all driving home to the compound, with Ingrid Muller or Sarah and her alleged son.
                                           ------------------------------
“What were you doing in that warehouse all alone?” Steve asked.
“Where have you been these last two years?” Tony asked at the same time as him.
Currently they were questioning Ingrid, while Natasha and Y/N stayed on the other side of the glass in the questioning room.
“Hiding.” She answered the first man. “And hiding.” She responded to the second.
“From what?”
She shrugged.
“Ingrid, you are facing a lifetime in prison if you don't cooperate. You are already facing a long time even with cooperation, so you better talk. For the sake of yourself and your son.”
The woman seemed to be affected by that, because she looked up at them with tears in her eyes.
On the other side of the glass, Y/N and Natasha watched attentively.
“Does something seem off to you?” The redhead asked.
“You saw it too, didn't you?”
“The look of relief on her face when she saw it was us? Yeah.” She nodded.
“It doesn't make any sense.” Y/N shook her head, frowning.
On the other side, Sarah, Steve and Tony were in silence while she cried. Then she broke it.
“My parents.”
“You were hiding from your parents?” The blond man asked, confused. “Why?”
“I know you have them.” She stated. “And I know what they said to you.”
“What did they say?” Iron Man asked this time.
“That I'm the bad guy.”
“How do we know if you are not?”
She looked at Cap and dried her tears.
“The kid, he's my son. Jeremiah. He is what came after my love with his father, someone my parents never accepted.”
Y/N frowned, the story seemed so similar to Sigyns. Meanwhile, Ingrid continued.
“They killed him.” She began crying again. “Then they forced me to join them, they said if I didn't they would kill Jer.”
“How do we know if you're telling the truth?” Steve asked her.
“Is Y/N here? I need to talk to her.” She asked, ignoring the blond man's question.
“You can't see her.” Tony told her firmly.
“She's behind the glass, isn't she?” Y/N squirmed uncomfortably. “Y/N, I'm sorry. You were a great friend. I'm sorry for everything that I said and did to you. It wasn't my choice. I hope one day you can forgive me.”
“Enough of this.” Y/N left the room and then entered the one where the two men and the woman were.
“Y/N,” Steve said, with a reprimanding tone.
“Y/N…” Ingrid said and smiled softly.
“Don't Y/N me. What are you talking about?”
“Y/N, I know you know something is off.”
“Ingrid-” She shook her head. “Sarah. I don't even know. Why would your parents force you to kidnap me? And to be a part of their organization?”
“Because she asked them to.”
“Who?”
“Sigyn.”

Chapter 50: Happy birthday.
“Wanda!” Y/N laughed incredulous and the redhead shrugged.
“What are you two talking about?” Sam said, walking in with Nat.
“Nothing.” Y/N said.
“Everything.” The witch emphasized with a smirk.
“Ooh, I want to know this everything nothing…” Nat said, mirroring her smirk. Y/N felt herself grow hotter from embarrassment.
“Fine! But Sam, get out.” He pouted with a frown.
“Oh come on, it's not fair!” She pursed her lips and pointed to the door. He sighed, defeated. “Fine, but only because I don't want to fight you three at the same time.”
The three girls smiled and waited until he left to begin their gossip.
“Okay, spill the tea.” The spy said.
“Have you been learning internet lingo?” Y/N asked, not being able to process that Natasha Romanoff had just said “spill the tea”. The redhead shrugged.
“Maybe…”
“Anyways,” she shook her head. “We were talking about something... pertaining to a person… and a certain… gift…”
“For god's sake Y/N!” Wanda laughed and then turned to Nat. “She wants to impress Loki with something sexy and I said that she should wear lingerie with his helmet.”
Natasha frowned, thinking, and then, surprising Y/N, she nodded.
“Yup, that makes sense.”
“What?” Y/N asked. “I'm not gonna wear his helmet! This is not a cosplay!”
“Okay but… think about it. What does Loki love most in the world?” Y/N frowned.
“Um… snakes?”
“Y/N, be serious.”
“Okay!” She held up her hands in surrender. “Me, he loves me.” Nat smirked.
“So confident.”
“Natasha, be serious.” She mocked and the spy rolled her eyes.
“Whatever. He loves you, and what else does he love?”
“Thor?”
“No! His outfit!”
“Okay, he's not vain.” Y/N argued.
“I'm not saying he is vain, I'm saying… he's a prince, he was a prince, and his clothes were important. Especially that helmet, which serves as a crown.”
“And I am…”
“His queen.”
“His devoted queen.” Wanda added with a smirk.
“Okay, now that is a different territory.” Nat said, pursing her lips.
“Yup, I'm not discussing that with you guys. Ever.”
“Oh, come on! With who else are you going to discuss this with? Steve?” Y/N barked out a laugh and Nat giggled.
“Only for the look on his face if I ever talked to him about that!”
“Honestly, come on. We want details…”
“We don't want anything. You.” Nat said, pointing at her.
“Okay, I want the details.”
“What?” Y/N grabbed her phone and pretended to get a call. “Oh yes, that!” The two redheads rolled their eyes. “Okay, sure thing!” She continued on as she left the room.
“Terrible actress.” The spy said, shaking her head.
“Hey!” Y/N exclaimed from the hallway and made both of them laugh.
                                     -------------------------------
Y/N woke up to a nose brushing against her neck. She hummed in appreciation.
“Good morning my darling,”
She turned around to face him and found a smile on his face.
"Hey love..." She sighed and nuzzled her face in the crook of his neck.
He grabbed onto her waist tighter, pulling her as close to him as possible. Then, much to her annoyance, he pulled away and went to turn around to grab something from the bedside table. He then turned around again, with an almost shy smile.
"What?" She asked.
"Happy birthday my love," he said and kissed her lips sweetly.
They had talked about it, this year she was ready to celebrate this day. She was ready to enjoy it with the people she loved so much. So she smiled.
"Thank you babe, but what-"
"Here." He said as he showed her a rectangular velvet box. She pursed her lips and went to grab it, but he stretched his hand out of her reach. “Ah, ah, ah. Not yet.”
“Loki-” She began to protest but he cut her off.
“My love, my angel, my darling Y/N. I have always suspected that I was living in a thousand year dark night, that there was a light that was not shining on me. I was able to confirm that the moment I first saw you. Such angelic beauty I was not privy of for so long.”
He sat up straighter and grabbed onto her hands, his eyes shining with so much affection she felt she might pass out from all the love she felt for this man. “You are a light in this universe and all the others. You are kind and brave and stubborn as they come.” She let out a strangled chuckle. “You are my love, my life, and most importantly, you are my daylight…”
“Loki,” she sobbed as she jumped him and wrapped her arms tightly around his neck.
“Happy birthday, my darling.” He said as he hugged her back.
She pulled away just a bit to see his face and he could see tears on her cheeks.
“Loki, I love you so much. I don't know how to deal with it.” She kissed his lips and then went to pepper kisses all over his face. “I love you, I love you, I love you. I never had… I never felt so loved.”
He brushed some hairs out of her face and smiled softly at her.
“You are everything to me, Y/N. You are my heart, my courage, my strength… everything.”
“You are everything to me too, Loki. I mean it.” He grinned.
“Now… open your present.”
He didn't need to tell her twice. The velvet box had a tied up ribbon on top of it, so she untied it and opened the box slowly.
She gasped as she looked at a beautiful bracelet and then at her beautiful boyfriend.
“You are insane.” She laughed. “This is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. After you of course.” She added slyly and he let out a laugh.
“Each charm is for a moment we shared together. This one is for when you lend me Romeo and Juliet. It was our first real conversation.” He said pointing to a book shaped charm. “This one is for that time we went to adopt what you now call our child.” They both smiled as she touched the cat shaped charm.
“It was our first hug…” She said and they both smiled softly.
“And this one is for us… being a family of two.” He said shyly, pointing to the last charm that had two little people on it.
Y/N touched the charm and closed her eyes.
“Darling?” He asked, frowning with worry.
“Hm?”
“Are you alright?” She heard his beautiful voice, full of concern, and opened her eyes letting a few tears fall from them.
“Im… okay. So much better than okay.” She said, sniffling. “I… Loki…”
There was something in the way she was looking at him, in the way her eyes were full of happiness and sorrow at the same time. There was something hanging in the air; an epiphany perhaps. An epiphany of how much they loved each other, how unkind life had been with them before, how kind it was now. Something told him that she couldn't put it into words, all that love, all that pain. But it was there, he was sure of it. So he gave her the same look with a soft smile, grabbed her hands and said:
“I know.”
                                        ------------------------------
“No one forget the balloons or I swear to god!” Tony said dramatically. He had bought heart shaped Taylor Swift balloons for Y/Ns party and he was hellbent on no one forgetting to showcase how good of a parent he was.
“We wouldn't dare Tony.” Natasha said, rolling her eyes.
The rest of the group was organizing the room, while Loki distracted Y/N.
“Loki, I'm hungry.” Loki sighed.
“Well, my love, I'll go grab you something.”
“Okay…” She answered innocently.
Little did they know, they both were planning something for the other.
“How is everything here? Y/N seems to be getting impatient.”
“What are you doing here and not distracting her?” Tony asked, alarmed.
“She wanted something to eat, am I supposed to starve her too?” Loki asked sarcastically.
Tony didn't answer, instead choosing to roll his eyes.
“In a few minutes bring her down. We are almost ready.”
In her room, Y/N looked at herself in her mirror. She had decided to take Wanda's advice and wear some green lingerie while on her head sat Loki's horned helmet. She could do this, it was just Loki.
Loki was so concentrated on not dropping the tray with food that he didn't even notice Y/N was not on her bed anymore. That was until he set the tray on her nightstand and called for her.
“One second!” Her sweet voice called.
He was about to ask if she was alright, when she opened the door slowly and walked out wearing a black silk robe with his helmet on and smiling seductively.
He swallowed.
“L-Love, what-”
“Hush darling, just… enjoy.”
Slowly, she opened the robe and revealed a set of green and gold lingerie, which made Loki's heart almost leap out of his chest.
Yes, they had had sex before, but she never did this, they never tried to spice things up. But this… this was more than spicing things up. This was Y/N giving herself to Loki in a way that she had never given herself to anyone. This was an offering. An offering to him.
He only realized he was looking at her like an idiot when she frowned and began covering herself up.
“Are you… Do you not like it?” She asked, suddenly insecure.
He widened his eyes.
“Darling, this is…” He got closer to her and began caressing her arms and getting rid of what was left of the robe. “This- you. You are simply stunning. But I don’t understand why.”
“I wanted to give you a gift.” He laughed.
“On your birthday?”
“Well yes. I thought this gift we could both enjoy…” She began smiling seductively once again and he almost threw her on the bed and took her right then and there. But there was one problem.
“I- I would love nothing more than to ravish you right this second…”
“But…” She looked disappointed.
“But, unfortunately, this will have to wait. We have to go.”
“Where? We’re only having dinner with the team in a while.”
“Well… yes. Dinner is ready.”
“So early?” She asked, confused.
“Yes, they didn’t want any mission interrupting your special dinner so they made it early.”
“Oh.” She frowned. “Alright. I, uh, I’ll take this off.”
“No!” He exclaimed quickly. She turned around. “How about you leave this under your clothes, a little preview of what will happen later.” He started to get closer to her, with a mischievous glint in his eyes.
She smirked and got even closer, pressing both their chests together.
“Mmm yeah? You think you’ll be able to control yourself?” She asked him as she innocently lowered her hand and palmed his groin. He growled and grabbed her face, pulling her in for a deep kiss.
When it started to get heated, he pulled away. She pouted and he felt the urge to bite that puckering lip and make her his, as he had done many nights before.
“I think that…” He traced his index and middle finger over her breasts. “If I find it too hard we’ll just have to make an excuse and leave early hm?”
She smirked.
“I guess we will.”
                                               ---------------------------
“What are we having for dinner?” Loki looked at Y/N and smiled, amused. They were currently in the elevator, heading to the dining room, where the surprise party was being held.
“Think of your favorite food in the world…” She began dreaming of every single thing that she loved when he popped her bubble. “Well, not that.”
“You're mean.” She pouted.
“You love me.” Y/N rolled her eyes.
“Eh,” she said but she couldn't contain herself from wrapping her arms around his neck and covering his cheek with kisses as he laughed heartily.
The elevator doors opened with a ring and she headed for the dining room. When she reached the big doors that led her there, she looked behind her to see a very silent Loki. She frowned.
“Are you okay Lokes?” He looked at her and smiled softly.
“Yes, I just want you to have the perfect day.”
Y/Ns heart swelled at that and she gave him the softest look she could muster.
“Loki, I woke up next to you and we got to spend the whole day together, I don't know what could be more perfect than that.”
He smiled at her and grabbed her face with his hands to give her a kiss full of gratitude. They both smiled into the kiss like idiots, and before it got too heated Loki broke it off.
“Now, come on. Let's go have dinner with your family.”
“Our family.” She corrected him and he had to swallow the lump in his throat. It was so nice to hear that and to know that it was true.
He gave Y/N one last smile before she opened the doors and was greeted with a loud “SURPRISE!” coming from everyone on the team.
“Oh my god!” She put her hands over her mouth in shock. “Oh my god! Are those Taylor Swift balloons and are you Taylor Swift?” She asked, making everyone else laugh.
“Yes, they are and yes, we are.” Tony said, proud of himself.
Y/N laughed and began looking around. Everyone was here, including Strange and Sigyn. The whole family together for her birthday. She was just expecting a normal dinner, perhaps a cake, but not all this. The place was decorated with balloons and glitter and a huge “Happy Birthday” sign in purple and pink. They were all dressed as a different Taylor Swift. Most men, except for Thor who now had his long hair back, were wearing a blonde wig. Y/N felt her heart grow ten times bigger at the sight of her beautiful family.
“I know we told you a million times today…” Nat went to hug her. “But happy birthday Y/N/N. We love you.”
Y/N hugged her tightly and closed her eyes. She didn't want to cry, yet she wouldn't be able to contain it for much longer.
“Thank you Natty, I love you too. A lot.” She smiled and pulled away. “And you guys… Thank you. I love all of you, this is amazing.” She finished, a bit choked up.
“Save the tears for later, we have more coming.” Tony said coming closer to her. “Happy birthday kid,” he lowered his voice so only she could hear, “even though you're definitely not a kid anymore, you'll still always be my kid… the same one who stumbled into that meeting room that first day.”
“Tony…” She began crying. “How do you expect me not to cry?”
“I don't mind you crying out of emotion, but I want it to be because of something I said.”
She let out a laugh as everyone rolled their eyes playfully.
And just like that, the party began.
                                            ---------------------------
“Remember when you came crying to me because you saw Loki eating a toast?” Natasha asked, amused. Everyone else burst out laughing in confusion.
“What? Why?” Clint asked. Y/N bit her lip, embarrassed.
“I was just really excited to see him. Like, he was my favorite character and one day i’m watching him on TV and then the next he’s eating a toast right in front of me.”
“I did not know me eating toast could be such an important moment to you.” Loki told her playfully and she bumped his shoulders with hers.
“Hey! Leave me alone, I was a fan!” She smirked and lowered her voice. “And now I get to sleep next to you… or under.” He swallowed thickly.
“What are you two talking about?” Tony asked.
“Absolutely nothing.” Loki responded, perhaps too quickly, making everyone laugh at his nervousness around Tony still; he was the father of the love of his life after all, what was he supposed to do? Tell him that they were whispering about sleeping together? That would go very smoothly.
“Oh! Remember that time that you put purple dye in Caps shampoo and for two weeks he had to look like a teen pop star?” Tony asked, enjoying the look on Steve's face.
“Remember when Nat made us watch that video of you watching Bambi for the first time?” Cap asked, pleased with himself due to Tony’s reaction.
“Hey! I thought you rocked the look Cap, truly.” And that’s when everyone started talking over the other and trying to swap embarrassing stories about the other. And so that’s when Y/N began getting lost in her own thoughts.
For such a long time, she hated her birthday; even before the accident, even before everything. It was just a reminder that she wasn’t who she wanted to be, that time was ticking, that she was alone. So every birthday she cried, and every birthday she made the same wish as she blew out the candles all alone in her dimly lit kitchen. I just want to not be alone anymore.
Thors boisterous laugh brought her back to reality. She looked at him, then she looked at Clint, who was wrestling Pietro on the couch while the other in question laughed and tried to push him away. She looked at Wanda and Vision holding hands, talking to Nat and Bucky. She watched as Sam got up to get himself a drink and brought Steve one, as he conversed with the others and laughed. She saw Tony arguing with Bruce over some science thing, probably. Even though she wasn’t listening, she could almost hear Tony’s sarcasm and Bruce’s calm voice, disagreeing with him. She saw every single one of them. She saw her family, all together for her. And suddenly she realized she was seeing her wish come true.
A small pang of guilt hit her when she realized that she hadn’t thought of her other family at all. Even though it may not have been the best family, she still loved and missed them. She wondered if they were watching over her. If they were, she wondered if they would’ve been mad that she had seemingly replaced them. But mostly, she wondered if they were okay.
So when the time to blow out the candles came and everyone was expectant around her, waiting for her to make a wish, perhaps a wish pertaining to something material, a new Taylor Swift album or new clothes, she closed her eyes and wished for one thing only, for them to be okay.
