...Meanwhile, Jean stares at his phone, switching back and forth in his mind between hit send or delete message. Ultimately, he decides on the former — after all, it’s not like he’s asking to be your boyfriend again. It’ll just be a friendly chat between two confused exes. Nothing romantic about it.

At 3:15 sharp, Marco arrives at the on-campus Starbucks to see an anxious-looking (Y/N) waiting for him, two drinks in hand. She shoots him a meek wave as he approaches and sets his stuff down at her table.

“Iced White Mocha, right? Had to ask Historia.” She says.

“Yeah, thanks!”

There’s a lull for a moment as (Y/N) fidgets with her jewelry. Marco decides to put her out of her misery.

“Just ask away, alright? I’ll put it all on the table.”

She doesn’t hesitate.

“Can I ask what happened that night you got injured? Eren said it was Reiner’s fault, but what does that mean? And do you know about the whole cheating thing?”

With a sip of his coffee, Marco takes a second to ponder all of her questions.

“I’ll start by saying that we figured out about the cheating lie the same time you did. We hadn’t heard anything about it until Jean brought it up in the group chat. I imagine Historia knew because when we talked about it, she seemed very... heated about Jean. But she never explained why.”

“Yeah... I told the girls what happened when it did. It’s a long story, but Reiner told me not to say anything because it would out him as the snitch and he didn’t want to start drama.” (Y/N) lets out a small laugh. “I’m honestly surprised Sash was able to keep a secret for this long.”

“It’s a miracle Connie didn’t hear about it. But I have a question for you. Why did you take what Reiner said at face value?”

She squirms. It’s a genuine question, she knows, but when it came down to it, she simply abandoned her faith in Jean. She doesn’t really know why she went with it other than the fact that Reiner was one convincing son of a bitch.

“I’m so stupid, Marco. I don’t know why Jean forgave me so easily.”

“I do. But that’s a conversation for another time.” He shoots her a smile. “Back to your questions - I don’t remember anything about the night of my injury, so I won’t be much help there.”

“Huh?”

“I had a bad concussion. The only thing I can recall clearly is exactly before we went onto the field for practice. I had run back to the locker room because I couldn’t find my mouthguard and Reiner and Bertholt were there, and that’s about it.”

“Shit, I didn’t realize it was that bad, Marco!” (Y/N) exclaimed. “Did anybody tell you what happened?”

“I think it’s unclear. A lot was happening at once and because it wasn’t an actual game, nobody was filming.” Marco’s brow furrows a bit in thought. “Eren and Jean said that we were running tackle drills. I was paired with Reiner, and I guess he came at me really hard, and then the next thing you know, my helmet flies off and I’m unconscious.”

“Oh my god.”

“Certainly not ideal.”

“Marco... do you really think it was an accident?”

For a moment, there’s an uncomfortable silence. Marco stares into his cup with a frown etched deeply onto his face; he had believed it was an accident because Reiner was always a nice guy. But now...?

He sighs. “Honestly, (Y/N), I don’t really know anymore. I had a lot of faith in Reiner being a good person, but--”

Buzz.

(Y/N) glances down at her phone, and suddenly her blood runs a little cooler than it did just a second ago.

(Y/N) can’t even accurately recount how she got to this moment.

One minute, she was clawing at Reiner’s shirt in an attempt to stop him from killing Eren. The next, she is single, confused, and somehow sitting in the passenger seat of her high school ex’s Honda Accord.

Go figure.

The silence in the car is so very loud. So much to think about, and yet neither party can articulate the questions they have for each other.

Instead, Jean settles on clearing his throat and awkwardly asking, “You okay?”

She sighs and glances down at her phone.

No response from Reiner. Not that (Y/N) anticipates much else. The girls yelling at her is also not unexpected. Marco texting is a pleasant surprise, however. And she doesn’t even have the mental energy to read through the group chat more than once.

But... yes. She’s okay. She’s okay because Jean is familiar. Jean is her rescuer from that disastrous party. Jean is...

A cheater! Right? Or... what did Sasha mean?

“I’m fine. But...”

“An explanation?” He interjects, taking his eyes off the road for a moment to worriedly glance at her. “I wish I knew, but I never cheated on you. That much I can say with certainty. Did you read my texts?”

“I... no. I got mad. Sorry.”

“I never cheated. I never heard a rumor about cheating or I would’ve said something. I don’t know why Reiner told you what he did, but I would never hurt you like that. I mean it when I say that I thought you were my...”

He trails off. She thinks she knows the blank there, but decides not to push him.

“I didn’t... I don’t even know what to say.”

“I can’t even imagine what he could’ve possibly conjured up as ‘evidence’. I don’t think I even really came into contact with him all that much outside of games and practices.”

Suddenly, she feels foolish — the only “evidence” she was ever given was a story about Jean kissing someone at a Halloween party. Reiner had been very convincing, telling her not to say anything about it since he was the only witness and didn’t want to start drama... telling her that it wasn’t worth it to accuse him because of everything else happening in his life... why the fuck did she just go along with all that, no question?

“I thought you ghosted me, (Y/N). And with everything going on with my mom and Marco and football, it hurt.” He sighs. “Not that it matters much now. I don’t blame you for it if you thought I cheated.”

“I am so sorry.” She says.

“I am too. For this whole misunderstanding.” He responds.

But it’s now that he pulls into the parking lot of her dorm, pulling up and idling along the curb. (Y/N) almost doesn’t want to get out of the car. It feels so strange -- so unresolved. But she doesn’t know what else to say. She’s too exhausted to think.

“Are we okay?” She asks. He looks surprised at her words.

“I— yeah. Yes. We’re okay.”

“We have more to talk about, but I’m tired.”

He simply nods.

“Bye, Jean.”

“Bye, (Y/N).”

And with that, she shuts the car door. He watches her approach the dorm; watches her glance back as she makes it to the entrance and give him a small wave. And then she disappears.

Jean can’t get rid of the stupid smile on his face the entire way back to his own dorm.

I’m alive!

A lot has happened since I last posted and quite frankly, it’s really too much for me to discuss. No, I probably shouldn’t have just... disappeared. But I lacked the mental energy that being on social media required. I’m in a much better headspace now and am seeking the fulfillment that writing for you guys provided me.

A climactic night is coming to a not-so-happy end for more than one party.

“Don’t go. Please.”

(Y/N) has been pleading for what feels like eons, but her words fall on deaf ears. Reiner is too angry to hear her.

“Bertholt, get your shit. We’re out of here.”

“Reiner, please-“

He finally turns to face her. The anger in his eyes is evident, but she sees a tinge of sadness somewhere in there too.

“I can’t do this anymore, (Y/N).”

She is still. The loud music, the confused shouting, the yelling and laughing and jeering… it all melts into silence. This couldn’t possibly be happening. Not right here. Not right now.

“What?” Is all she can manage.

Reiner turns away. It’s too hard to meet her gaze.

“I’m sorry, (Y/N). I love you, but I can’t do this anymore. This is too much.”

And she can’t form any words as he simply shrugs on the jacket Bertholt has retrieved for him. She can’t move towards him as he makes his way for the door.

She simply sits, dumbfounded, and does nothing but let tears fall as Reiner leaves her.

On the other side of the room, Jean is busy wiping blood from Eren’s face. He wants to be angry, but he can’t. If anything, he’s proud. He’s glad his friends have his back. He’s… avenged.

“Thanks…” Jean mumbles. He hates being civil with Eren, but he does appreciate the sentiment.

“I’ve got your back, man.” Eren responds with a grin.

Jean wants to say more, but his thoughts are cut short by a familiar chime from within his pocket.

Fuck. It’s Hitch.

He begrudgingly opens his messages.

He knows it’s supposed to hurt, but Jean can’t even bring himself to care that much. Instead, he rolls his eyes, shoves his phone in his pocket, and makes up his mind - it’s time to just go back to his dorm and sleep for two straight days.

…But first, he has a damsel in distress to rescue.

She wonders for a moment if this could be her reality.

The sheets are pooled up beneath two naked bodies, rhythmic breaths shaking in unison. Her skin is electric, tingling like she’s been struck down by lightning; it is the most pleasant discomfort she has ever known. She lays beside him quietly, fingers locked with his as he sleeps.

She wonders for a moment if he would hold her hand in waking hours.

Intimacy is a thing she has only ever shared with him. It is a gift - something treasured, something sacred - and she knows deep down that there is nobody else that she could ever allow this close. Both heat and heart are reserved for him alone.

She wonders for a moment if he feels anything at all.

His eyes are glass when they find themselves in bed together. She stares into them, searching desperately for her reflection, but is met with emptiness. Her passion is unrequited; he does not love her. He has never loved her.

She wonders for a moment if she’ll suffer forever.

Because it hurts. To be so obviously in love; to give up everything - mind, body, and soul - and realize that it does not matter. But she knows she’ll give, and keep on giving, because his comfort is all she knows and craves. Bleeding herself dry for him is what keeps her happy, because at least she gets to be this close, even if only for these sordid nights.

She wonders for a moment if she’s a good enough stand-in for Mikasa.

After all, she knows that’s who Jean pretends she is.

~ Pink Lemonade (Part 11) ~

As the night heats up, Jean must play mediator for his moron friends.

It takes one step into the apartment for Jean to realize just how chaotic the scene truly is. A crowd has formed some sort of ring around the spectacle, cheering and shouting at the two idiots punching the shit out of each other in the middle.

For a moment, Jean almost wants to cheer with them - Eren, despite clearly taking a fair bit of damage, has actually messed Reiner up a bit as well.

He’d be impressed if he weren’t completely mortified.

“Reiner! Let it go!” A voice shouts. Jean looks up to see Bertholt at the edge of the crowd, trying desperately to get his friend’s attention before somebody ends up dead. Jean pushes through the sea of onlookers, waving to get Bertholt’s attention.

“Dude! Pull Reiner back! I’ve got Eren!” Jean shouts over the noise. Bertholt looks up and locks eyes with Jean, relief evident in his expression.

Jean makes his way towards Eren and grabs his arm. Armin, who’d been waiting not too far away, grabbed the other.

“Let it go, man. It’s alright.” Jean urges. It’s enough to get Eren to relent, if only for a moment. Armin yanks him backwards out of the circle.

Jean turns to check if Reiner has been calmed. He’s got his back turned now, talking to Bertholt, and for a second he’s relieved this whole mess is over.

And then he sees (Y/N).

Crying. Saying something to Reiner, who is clearly not listening. Waving her arms around in exasperation. Pleading.

Jean thinks he knows what’s happening, but he turns away. For now, his focus is patching up Eren.

The party begins and it’s up to Connie to maintain the peace.

“Reiner!”

(Y/N)’s voice is a welcome trill, cutting the tension that lingers in the air like a knife. Connie eyes the door wearily, taking in the situation as best he can and promptly sorting out his next move.

People have started to arrive. There are so many other colleagues here already; the party is almost in full swing. This was no time to make a scene.

“Hey, baby.” Reiner replies as he steps through the door, pulling (Y/N) into a hug. Behind him are Bertholt and Annie, the former clearly scared shitless and the latter looking highly disinterested.

Sasha and Ymir, from the looks of it, don’t understand the gravity of what tonight could be. Connie is acutely aware of the hope in Sasha’s eyes - a hope for a warm, happy, cheesy reunion - and it’s obvious that she has known about Reiner and (Y/N) for a long, long time.

He considers his options. Is it his story to tell? Is it his problem to solve? No, but he is helping to host this party, and would a huge dramatic fight really make for a good night?

Connie makes his move and pulls out his phone.

Sasha, however, doesn’t get the chance to pull (Y/N) aside, as four individuals come striding in behind the three Marley students; Mikasa, Historia, and Armin.

Connie and Sasha’s eyes lock as the sudden realization hits them: if Mikasa is here, then so is—

“EREN!”

The name is less of an introduction and more of panicked exclamation from both Mikasa and Armin alike.
