I think the idea that bands or musicians need to "make it" in their early 20s or younger otherwise it's pathetic needs to die because there's no point in your life where improving skill stops and you can pick up a craft at any age, and truly probably robs the world of great music and talented people.
you can't drink wine or coffee, and you're stuck with a body that fights each small request you make...
