Queerly Proud (2019)

This work was created by artist Torrey Beckham as a celebration of queerness in its many forms and the beauty and change that can result from our unity. It moves beyond the colors of the traditional pride flag to celebrate and hold space for those with other queer identities. 🖤 The top of the image includes the colors of the traditional pride flag, but in darker hues to celebrate the great number of BIPoC who identify as queer rather than simply gay or lesbian. 🖤 The two middle sections “bind” the work together and represent the origins of pride. One side represents the black and brown who started pride and the fight for queer rights. The other section celebrates pride’s foremothers and features the colors of the transgender pride flag with the addition of a black and brown stripe to highlight the presence and challenges of trans ppl of color, and specifically trans black women who are being murdered at an alarming rate in this country. 🖤 At the bottom we see the colors of the bisexual pride flag and colors from the Demi + asexual pride flag. 🖤 The image itself is not completely circular. Not completely linear. We are not all the same. But we are complete. And expanding. 🖤🌈🖤🌈🖤
