what exactly is a kobold
That’s a good question! As far as 5E is concerned, they’re small draconic creatures that are typically quite cowardly, unintelligent, and far more formidable together than alone. I think older editions and/or other systems posited that they were more dog-like (which is the kind I’ve drawn in the past, since my friend playing the character specified it so) - I’m not exactly sure on where that take originates but I’ve definitely seen it around enough to know it was established lore at some point. They’re typical low-level XP fodder found in dungeons, usually playing goons for a more powerful being that ends up being the final dungeon boss.
However, if you wanted my personal favourite lore (the exact origin of which I cannot remember but I’m not about to take credit for it), I like to define a kobold as any organic creature given sapience (and sometimes otherwise modified) to serve a specific master and/or purpose. This opens the possibilities for kobolds based on any kind of animal, including the established lizard- and dog-based ones, but also non-beast creatures that are still harmless enough to be co-opted this way without their creator having to worry about giving intelligence to something with far too much potential to subsequently control. It also makes sense then that they’re only given enough intelligence to be able to fulfil whatever purpose they were created for (very commonly mindless grunt work) and that they tend to be tight-knit and efficient team-workers. I think there’s endless flavour to be had here whilst also uniting the various extant kobolds under a single concept and statblock (with room for minor variation) in a way that actually makes sense.
Ultimately though kobolds are just little guys

Fat goat!!!!!
If there’s interest I’ll clean up and post the pattern too
(Credit to plushify for a truly fantastic tool!)
[Image: three photos at different angles of a small plush goat sewn together from felt sheets. It has a tan brown body, cream underbelly and dark brown horns, with yellow button eyes, and it wears a golden bell on a red ribbon around its neck (from one of those Lindt chocolate Easter rabbits). It is quite comically round. End ID.]

CATO!!! That thing I’m obsessed with him
I’m playing him in Shadowrun now!!! We’re three sessions in and my friend and I are already squealing over how cute the chemistry is between our characters… now we wait
[Image: a digital drawing of Cato, a chubby, pretty, dark-skinned elf boy with curly, bleached blond hair tinted pastel pink and blue, visibly darker at the roots and at the cornrows across the (viewer’s) left side of his head. He wears bright, neon-pink makeup around his eyes, big hoop earrings, and stylish, futuristic clothes, consisting of a faintly-patterned black halter that looks to be made out of PVC or some such shiny, stretchy fabric, over a mesh top with long sleeves and shoulder cutouts, black gloves and shorts with a garter belt clipped to dark, translucent stockings, and a pair of chunky heeled high-top sneakers, each with a different hanzi character on the tongue (愛 on his right, and 死 on his left). A translucent holographic jacket hangs open off of his shoulders, scrunched around the bend in his arm and dangling loose over his other hand. He stands with one hand on his hip, looking somewhat petulantly off to one side. End ID.]

I’M SQUEAKING IN WITH TEN MINUTES TO SPARE I ONLY SAW THIS POST AT 4PM
Tumblr media
My design is based on Chinese dragons and the Qilin (after which my grandfather is named)! It draws inspiration particularly from the layered sleeve elements and cloud collars of hanfu (and with the white eye ring/streak from the Mandarin duck, my favourite extant animal). The name I’d give this is Sacred Jade. I can see it particularly on small maniraptors like velociraptor, deinonychus, or even archaeopteryx or microraptor (or even the larger ones)! They’re some of my favourite dinosaurs and I’ve been so delighted with them in game. Good luck everyone!
(I follow from @sleebyfrogs!)
[Image: a digital drawing of a bird-like dinosaur, possibly deinonychus or a relative, and similar in style to the designs of Paleo Pines. It’s posed to showcase its colours and pattern, which is comprised of red, white, yellow, and a pale aqua green, and forms shapes across its body reminiscent of wings and a fiery mane, echoing the commonly depicted features of qilin. To the sides are a couple close-ups from differing angles of places on the body that the main drawing doesn’t make clear, such as the top of the head and underside of the arm and chest. End ID.]

Couldn’t keep myself from doing one for Ashes too. Mm O’Reilly you could go to set me on fire and I’d probably already have melted from the heat of my gay
[Image: an ambigram that reads “Ashes” in one rotation and “Hades” in the other, with both displayed, one on top of the other. The letters have long descenders and sharp, tilted tips, evocative of flames. Both are coloured in brightly glowing gradients of fire, with “Ashes” in orange and red tones and “Hades” in cyans and blues. End ID.]

Ludari for @/Neopawliton on Instagram! This was part of an outfit exchange event, so I’ve only designed and drawn the clothes on top of the adorable base provided! I guess I’ve thoroughly cemented myself as the guy who draws drow in hanfu/hanyuansu now... all things considered, pretty good legacy I think.
[Image: a digital drawing of Ludari, a drow wizard, in beautiful, flowing robes and jewellery. He has pale lilac skin with white freckles, and round, grey eyes. His long, wavy white hair is adorned around his face in dangling gold and silver, including a lotus crown and several hairsticks and asymmetric earrings. He has a sleeveless teal-blue vest with silver frog fastenings and a faint pattern of leaves, and a sheer, seafoam-coloured scarf draped around his arms and tucked into a matching sash. Sheer silks hang off his arms from gold bangles and rings, and from the sash hangs a talisman with a holed disc and beaded tassels. His deep purple, ankle-length skirt is similarly patterned in leaves, and he wears black socks with gold shoes that upturn into points at the toes. End ID.]

Don’t mind me just uhhhhhhh gender crisis time again
[Image: a heavily filtered image of a nondescript, gaunt silhouette, limply looking back over its shoulder, distinguished by a shapeless, yellow glow. The glowing, channel-shifted text around it reads “maybe I am just some kind of strange boy”. The background is dark blue, with the noise flecking making it reminiscent of the dark void of infinite space. End ID.]

My dear friend @fluffy-sweater-lover’s Evander for his birthday back in February! Love this tall purple thing… this broken man
[Image: a digitally-drawn headshot of Evander, a tiefling, with an ornate, hexagonal frame. He has a hollow face with pointed ears, and tired eyes with vibrantly orangish-yellow irises and black sclera. His skin is a lavender colour, and his hair is black and fluffy, and textured with distant stars like a night sky. His horns are a fawn brown, ridged, and taper upward in mirrored, delicate helixes. His lips are slightly parted, and his expression is of of exhaustion, but not quite of hopelessness. End ID.]

Doodle dump time!
[Image: a collection of greyscale doodles, as follows:
1) A portrait of the artist, lying on the floor with an existential expression as their face and hands begin to melt into a puddle. On the wall above them is a simple calendar with two shaded days marked, two weeks apart from each other. I was trying to capture the feeling of realising your D&D is not today but in a week from now, or alternatively missing a game that’s long finished/been on hiatus.
2) Cato, a chubby drow with an irritated expression on his face, having been woken from rest on a false alarm. His narrow eyes are narrowed yet further than usual, and his arms are folded over his chest. His hair is full of curl rollers and he’s wearing a sheer robe with a fluffy, feathery trim, the very picture of sophisticated decadence interrupted.
3) A work-in-progress from a larger piece, depicting Solace, a very short, gaunt drow, with downward-pointing ears, leant on his gnarled walking cane and staring ahead with a look of resolute nihilism from beneath his choppy hair. His foot on the side away from the cane is turned far outwards from its knee, in a way that it looks like it ought not to be able or comfortable to. He wears a peaked cap and a sharp cape coat with brocade fastenings, and warily clutches a battered journal in his free hand.
4) A very simple little cartoon of the artist knelt down with a ring box, on the verge of tears, proposing to mononykus: a small, feathery dinosaur that looks somewhat like an owl crossed with an anteater (modelled after its appearance in Prehistoric Planet, in which I fell in love with it). Beneath it is small text in brackets that reads “I am going to put it on her one big claw”, referring to the ring. Mononykus, with long, narrow tongue extended, looks indifferent to the whole affair. (Disclaimer: this is a joke about how quickly I was taken with and utterly delighted by this animal upon learning of its existence. I am not attracted romantically to dinosaurs.)
5) A headshot of the artist, with a small moustache drawn on and lines down from either side of the mouth like a nutcracker’s hinged jaw, in a peaked cap with an anchor emblem. (I was going for sort of a Toy Soldier-type sona, and I know mine looks very similar to its inspiration, but I can’t help that I look like that and these kinds of service uniforms have a lot of common design elements. This character would be maybe a clockwork lightkeeper.)
6) A drawing of my grandparents: a bent-over, ancient, serene-looking man with two watches on each wrist, and an elderly woman with curly hair and beady eyes, wearing a large chunky necklace and waving.
7) A very simplified drawing of my sorclock, Piper, wielding their meteor hammer. They are drawn as little more than a triangle and a quadrilateral with arms and dotted eyes, and a few lines for their characteristic hair, with two ellipses for the ends of the hammer, rotating too fast to be seen.
8) Solace, in his peaked cap and coat, laying face-down in the snow, given up. All that can be seen from under his hat are his pointed ears, and tufts of hair in every direction. Behind him are a few telltale footprints, marking his path, and fat, blurred snowflakes fall across the whole of the image.
End ID.]

Piper made a new friend!!! @jupitisms’ Ned!!!
[Image: a looping, animated gif of two simple figures alternatively bouncing up and down, both with vacant smiles. On the left is Ned, a gnome in a huge wizard hat, with their tail whirling in excited circles. On the right is Piper, a nondescript young person with fluffy hair. Behind them, in fainter pen, is text reading “new friend” in all caps. End ID.]

When I say “rotating my blorbos in my mind” it’s imperative you know I am not only spin-drying them horizontally and vertically but also this
[Image: several simple, black-and-white line doodles of a nondescript figure small enough to fit in a hand. In the first, they are sitting in the palm of an outstretched hand, as though being presented politely to the viewer. In the second, the hand is being turned so that they must struggle to climb over from one flat side to the other to stay on top, much like a lizard might. In the third, the two hands are clasped around each other, with only the two eyes of the small person visibly peering from the space within. In the fourth, the person is lying on their front, pressed against the floor by the hand’s much larger thumb. Their eyes are wide and they flail their limbs in futile attempts to escape. End ID.]

Assembled cast line-up version 3! I didn’t anticipate this becoming a (near-) complete redraw that took me nearly a year to the day, but I think it looks so much better for it. The page about them over on @magic-mitchell has been updated with the new faces and recent info too!
Image description under the cut, since it’s a very long one!
[Image: a digital drawing of the artist’s main D&D characters, both PCs and NPCs, in a simplified style, in front of a striped background with character-corresponding colours. From left to right: Anser, a drow rogue, holds her mask in one hand and glances over her shoulder toward the others, her body turned away. She is very short and lean, with a few sparse, white freckles, and wears a black assassin’s uniform. Heaven, a tiefling-vampire sorcerer, looks haughtily and playfully down at the viewer, wielding her glass stave. She is tall, with ice-blue skin, long, dark hair adorned in an elaborate headdress, and wears a long, pristinely white gown. Crocus, a drow-tiefling blood hunter, kneels in front of Heaven, on guard, weapons drawn to defend her. Her face is nigh-on shredded with scars, and she has one prosthetic, brass-coloured eye. She wears a uniform highly reminiscient of Anser’s, though more brightly coloured, with wine-red leather plates and gold accents to match the crocus flowers in her hair. Opportunity, a wood elf rogue (both dubious descriptors), stands in profile, caught mid-purposeful stride, examining a revolver in his hands from under his signature magpie-skull mask. He has a waifish figure, with long hair drawn back in a high ponytail that appears to have faint stars visible in its sheer darkness, and wears a rich, pine-green tailcoat. Providence, an orc-scourge aasimar barbarian, stands back to back with him, gazing upwards at a small moon that floats in her hands. She is tall, fat and strong, with dark blue skin covered in delicate markings and hair made of swirling storm clouds, and wears a short, mint-green dress covered in flowers. Solace, a drow bard, looks upward with anticipation, a spell swirling at his fingertips, and a troubled expression on his few unobscured features. He is tiny, covered in white freckles, with lowered ears and a mop of choppy hair that hides most of his face. He wears a navy-blue cape coat and a matching peaked cap, supporting his gaunt frame on a gnarled wooden cane in one hand, with his familiar, a copperhead snake, draped over his shoulders. Mitchell, a drow wizard, stands front and centre, holding a spyglass in one hand and his wand in the other. He is also tiny and covered in white freckles, with hair tied into a braid over one shoulder, and wears a robe that fades from teal to dark blue, over a maroon shirt. His familiar, a pipistrelle bat, hovers above him, and he looks upward with an expression of anxious, hesitant hope. Cato, a drow warlock, folds his arms and looks down toward where his sister is petting his familiar: a fluffy, blue-pointed cat. He has very curly white hair shaved short on one side and huge hoop earrings, and wears a dark, intricately-patterned ensemble that complements his chubby figure. Malcice, a drow rogue, is knelt down to pet her brother’s cat (who very much seems to be enjoying the attention) with a wide smile. She wears leather armour and small, round pince-nez glasses, and her impressively long white hair is box-braided and pulled into a loose ponytail behind her. Maxim, a “human” paladin (deeply unconvincing), stands with his longsword in one hand and whip in the other. He is very tall, and wears a heavy black hood, through the slits in which emerge an impressive pair of curling horns, with heavy gloves, a chainmaille shirt, and assorted pieces of metal plate. His face is covered by a very ornate helmet, which is ivory-coloured and painted in blue with delicate plantlife and birds. His legs have short auburn fur and cloven hooves, and a matching, tufted tail swings behind him. Ferrindale, a half-elf/half-gnome bard, is posed grinning, apparently shredding on a small, stringed instrument. They are very, very small, and have bleach-blond hair with brown roots and streaks, chunky earrings, and very brightly coloured clothes. Piper, a scourge aasimar sorcerer/warlock, is ducked and ready with their meteor hammer, looking upwards as if towards some unseen opponent. Their hair is made of strands of coiled, shiny copper, styled in an undercut with a rattail, and they wear a teal vest over a dark blue jacket, with loose, patterned green trousers. Effie, a changeling fighter in guise as a tiefling, has anxiously drawn their rapier and buckler. Their body is broad and brawny, with delicate unguligrade legs and cloven hooves, and a short, tufted tail. While their clothes and armour are dyed in muted colours, their features are, from head to toe, alabaster-white, with blank eyes, a neatly curled moustache, a thick, wavy ponytail, and a single, centred spiral horn. San, a human child, stands faced away from the viewer, entirely indistinct. They wear a hooded blue cloak and carry a wooden stave with one spiral end, onto which is hooked a metal lantern that glows with a gentle, blue flame. End ID.]

My DSS2022 piece for @dungeonmistrix! I fell in love with Su'li from the moment I saw her.
[Image: a digital drawing of Su'li, a young half-drow girl with lilac skin, wearing an airy seafoam-green jacket (bèizi) beneath a paler skirt, tied with a sash and belt over her chest (qíxiōng rúqún). Her long, white hair is half-up in two buns. With outstretched arms, she holds up a golden, circular structure crowned with seven points, and contemplates it with wide, amber eyes. Her hair and clothes sway as if in a breeze, and she's framed by a rounded border and a backdrop of deep blue, starry sky. End ID.]

Design I did for the circus club I go to (took out the actual initials for privacy reasons)! I took up a physical hobby to get myself out of my room and hopefully to help curb my OCD, and it’s been one of the best self care decisions I’ve ever made. See if you can spot all the props, all of which I’ve seen practiced there: contact poi, devil/flower sticks, diabolo, fire fans/sword/torches, hoop, juggling balls/clubs/hoops, puppyhammer, rope dart, staff, and whips!
[Image: a black and white digital logo design featuring a number of stylised circus props, drawn with a smooth pen with a constant line weight. In the middle is the word “initials!” in all caps, where the actual club’s initials are intended to be. It is almost entirely symmetrical, with whimsical curves and loops, and covered in a noise filter and the artist’s watermarks. End ID.]

I wanted to try and flip ‘Brian’ into ‘Merlin’ but make it elegant and intentional… yeah I know it probably wouldn’t have been an intentional design choice (though given that Brian has powers of foresight, maybe he anticipated that deliberately, who knows) but I love a challenge!
(Also this made me realise that I don’t think it’s ever actually mentioned in the album that he’s hanging upside down. The tarot stylings certainly bring the image to mind but I think I’ve just seen so much upside down Merlin fanart that I didn’t even question it)
[Image: an asymmetric ambigram in a style evocative of Art Deco, and in capital letters, made to look like an engraving on a brass plaque. In its first rotation, it reads ‘Brian’. In its second rotation, the plaque has been made to look aged and scratched, which has somewhat obscured its legibility, and it reads ‘Merlin’. End ID.]
