#thursday Of course Fannie Lou Hamer was a Libra ♎️ ✨😍 Happy Bornday ✊🏽🦋 Thank u 4 ur seeds. 🌿#thursdaymotivation #justice #Repost @muchachafanzine ・・・ Happy Birthday to trailblazing freedom fighter, community organizer, & civil rights activist #FannieLouHamer who was born on this day in 1917. ⠀⠀ •⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Born to a Mississippi family of farmers, Hamer had to give up her education to begin working on a cotton plantation after her parent’s animals were poisoned by a local yt man. • Married in 1945, Hamer spent the next 18 years working as a sharecropper & plantation record keeper. Sharecropping was known as 'slavery by another name' & if Black ppl ever made moves to own land or property, they would be met with violence. •⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In 1961, Hamer went into a minor surgery when a yt doctor performed a hysterectomy without her consent. This type of forced sterilization performed on Black women was so common that it was dubbed a "Mississippi appendectomy."⠀ •⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This atrocity motivated Hamer to join the Civil Rights Movement where she became a member of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee in 1962.⠀⠀ •⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Hamer began organizing voter registration drives. In her efforts, she was fired from her job at the plantation & was forced to move to protect herself from white supremacist violence. ⠀ •⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ During one of her moves, her home was shot at 16 times. And once in jail, she was beaten to the point of permanent damage in her eye, kidney & leg. But this did not stop her. •⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Challenging the all-yt Mississippi delegation, Hamer co-founded the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party in 1964 & announced her run for Congress. Though her bid was unsuccessful, her civil rights activism continued. ⠀⠀ •⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Much of Hamer’s activism centered around economic power for Black families. In 1969, she launched the Freedom Farm Cooperative to support poor Black farmers & sharecroppers who had been at the mercy of the local yt landowners.⠀ •⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In March of 1977, Hamer died from breast cancer. She was buried in Ruleville, Mississippi where her tombstone is encrypted with her quote "I am sick and tired of being sick and tired".
