all of the most important women in pauls life being the only ones not kneeling before him in the throne room scene. not chani because she refuses to bow before what he represents. not irulan because she is a princess royal and bows before no one even as her house crumbles around her. not jessica because she made him she made him into what stands before her now and by extension not alia who has loved her dearest brother from the instant she became aware and who will rule in his stead one day

The visual of the Harkonnen/Sardaukar bodies being burned in piles at the end of the film not only function as a mirror to the beginning (where House Atreides suffered that fate) to demonstrate how monstrous Paul had become, but it also showed how much he had dragged the Fremen with him in that they were cremating instead of reclaiming the water of their enemies (even if Harkonnen water isn't exactly potable).

One of my favorite parts of Dune Part 2 was the fight between Feyd and Paul, not only because it was epic, but because there was no background music or slow motion. It allowed you to be fully immersed in the scene without anything that made the scene over-dramatic, and I feel like that's not something that's common in current movies.

when they said in Dune that they needed spice for space travel i thought it was used as some sort of fuel but no apparently it's just because your pilot needs to be hight out of his mind to be able to safely navigate big ships into space

imagine you're some guy and you're going through the woods one day and you stumble upon a house and the people who live there just give you free food and eventually let you inside and it's like nothing you've ever seen before and the people are so nice and loving towards you and then one day they decide to never let you leave again, steal your balls, and give you a stupid fucking hair cut

Loved this scene in the atla live action because right. Zuko could easily beat that woman. He could drop her without thinking about it. But she’s not who he’s after, it’s Aang that he wants, and despite denying it, Zuko still has compassion for innocent lives. So even when it would be easier to just punch her in the face and move on, Zuko lets her beat him back because he doesn’t really want to hurt people, he just wants to go home

i do think there is a degree to which certain kinds of Instagram activists have convinced themselves that traumatising themselves in solidarity is a useful form of activism. "I'm having nightmares and crying so much I want to be sick because of all these videos of dying children but I can't look away while people are getting hurt" I mean don't you think you'd be able to help more if you weren't having nightmares and crying all the time?? don't you think this is a one-way trip to burnout? don't you think maybe increasing the amount of trauma going around is counterproductive? I dunno bro there's something to be said for bearing witness but there comes a point where you gotta look hard at yourself and go "am I helping, or am I just making myself suffer so I don't feel guilty for not suffering while somebody else is experiencing bad shit"

the way willy tries his hardest to bring fun and whimsy to noodle's life, the way he insists on finding the good in other people and navigating the world through the sheer power of magical optimism despite experiencing loss and pain and loneliness at such a young age, the way he literally creates an entire worldwide contest to bring that same happiness to charlie's life so many years later despite literally being betrayed by the entire world and isolating himself for more than a decade......
maybe the prequel was more aware of its dramatic irony than i initially thought

Can we talk about how Robin and Griffin might have other siblings?
“She has the letter from Griffin that Robin never opened. Meanwhile she’s read it so many times she’s memorized it. She knows three names – Martlet, Oriel, and Rook. She can see in her mind’s eye the final sentence, scrawled before the signatures like an afterthought: We’re not the only ones.
“She doesn’t know who these three are. She doesn’t know what this sentence means. She’ll find out, one day, and the truth will dazzle and horrify her.”
They have other siblings who Griffin loved, who Griffin wrote to, who Robin never knew about because he never opened Griffin’s final letter

one thing i like about babel is that unlike other teen protagonists thrusted into a political game, victoire, robin, letty, and ramy did not step up to the challenge with bravado—instead they had routine breakdowns and anxiety attacks

the way victorie and robin and ramy all loose their birth languages has me in shambles. victorie never really spoke hatian creole, she moved to france at a very young age, and when she tried to bring it into babel, she was dismissed. ramy, who’s from kolkata, who’s bengali, only speaks bengali once in the book and his speech has become rudimentary because the british saw urdu and sanskrit and arabic as more valuable. robin has forgotten cantonese by the time he goes back home for the same reason. it’s utterly tragic it comes with a deep pain that’s hard to describe the pain of loosing your mother tongue.
