the apathy and denial of the everyday person
There's a difference between exploitation and exposure. If the only thing we can handle seeing on the news is a taped-off crime scene, or a soldier standing on base before/after an attack, then we are in denial of the realities of everyday life for citizens and soldiers. And on a related note, it is also not new for us to criticize those who dare to expose the truth, just because we're too afraid to face it (see Al Jazeera)
Subway deaths are not new, especially in New York, a city that seems to have pioneered these tragedies. If only people would stop reacting to the photographer, and start reacting with disgust to the captured commuters huddled in a corner simply observing the events as if they're watching an action movie, we would get to an underlying problem that does not have anything to do with "the media".
