Netflix and Friends

      It has been a year since the world has stopped. It has been over a year since we got stuck on our homes. We may be safe from the virus, but we are still not saved from boredom. Mercifully, there’s Netflix. Throughout my one and half year in quarantine, most of my time was spent on binge watching and rewatching my favorites movies. It was so entertaining that sometimes, it drives away my solitude whenever I miss hanging out with my friends.

       Even before pandemic, one of my hobbies is binge watching on Netflix. Lying while watching my favorite show with some chips and snacks on the side—paradise. However, I do this with my friends. It is one of our quality time. Doing this kind of bond is exciting because we can tease and cry altogether depending on what we are watching. But now, because we need to take precautions due to the virus, we can’t even meet up or even go out for a snack. 

     From time-to-time if we’re not busy on our modules, my friends and I host a Teleparty. It is a method to watch TV with my buddies over the internet. It also synchronizes the video playback and inserts a group chat to Netflix—somehow feels like you’re all together in one room.

         Moreover, one of the best features that I like is to rewatch my favorite shows. Believe me, having a Sherlock Holmes Season 1-4 marathon after modules with some chips and sodas beside me is happiness. A reward that I will never get tired of.

     Squandering countless hours binge watching new shows and rewatching favorite shows is a privilege today. And I am thankful that I get do this filling the void of boredom in my mind. I may miss my friends, but I still get to bond with them through Netflix. Just like what Netflix said, “Stories move us. They make us feel more emotion, see new perspectives, and bring us closer to each other.”

The Local Beauty of Tagaytay

       “Tara Tagaytay” is what you commonly hear from people in the South. The most popular holiday destination in South Luzon due to its stunning scenery and cozy weather offered through its elevated altitude, Tagaytay City. This place is only two hours away from Manila so residents from nearby cities can visit with a last-minute decision. It has plenty of diners, lodges and gardens where it is possible for everyone to appreciate their stay cation. As a proud Caviteño living 30 minutes away from Tagaytay, I would like to share some of the best places and foods that is proven and tested by yours truly.

      One of the best drinks to warm yourself due to the cold weather in the morning is coffee. And one of the local products that Tagaytay is known for are coffee beans. My go-to café in Tagaytay is Starbucks Coffee at Calamba Road. While sitting on a warm café gathering your thoughts in the morning, you can look outside and enjoy the beautiful scenery of Taal Volcano as you sip your hot Café Americano. 

      During this time, they are open from 6 AM until 9:30 PM. I highly recommend this because of the breathtaking view and great ambiance. Believe me it is one of my best way to unwind — sit down, relax, enjoy the view, and drink to my hot Café Americano.

      For meals, you can pull over pretty much everywhere every time you get hungry. However, a must try delicacy on every restaurant is Bulalo. This warm, meaty, and flavorful dish of broth is an ideal match for the chill and gusty climate of Tagaytay. This is the reason why it has been turned into an integral part of numerous eateries' menu at the city.

       On the downside, since Tagaytay is an infamous destination, especially during weekends and holidays, you should expect a bumper-to-bumper traffic. Since the city has a narrow road, at times the road regulations change overnight. Sometime ago when we decided to go on 2 days and 1 night stay cation, we noticed that the road changed into one way after a night. As a tourist, it was confusing, but I guess that’s how they reduce the traffic. 

       Overall, for every stay cation we do at Tagaytay, it is always five stars for me. I would never get tired of traveling for 30 minutes just to unwind for every stress. The privilege to see and experience this kind of beauty is exceptional. I hope to visit again soon when it is safe to go out.

Life From a Different Perspective Through a Dying Man’s Eye

      “Aging is not just decay, it is growth.”, A phrase spoken by Morrie Schwartz to Mitch Albom, the writer of the memoir “Tuesdays with Morrie” which talks about lessons of life. Morrie Schwartz was Mitch Albom’s professor when he was in college. Their student-teacher relationship was far deeper than just academics, they were friends. However, they lost in contact when Mitch graduated. After sixteen long years of not staying in touch, Mitch discovered from a TV show that Morrie has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). They eventually got to meet again every Tuesdays and makes the most out of Morrie’s remaining time. Through Morrie’s melting muscles with his disease, he openly unfolds his reflections on death.

    The earliest parts of the novel include Mitch’s life practice which concentrates primarily on his occupation everyday generally because of his afraid of wasting his life in the same way as what happened to his beloved uncle that had died of pancreas cancer. “I buried myself in accomplishments, because with accomplishments, I believe I could control things, I could squeeze in every last piece of happiness before I got sick and died, like my uncle before me, which I figured was my natural fate.” 

     People-to-people fear losing power. Humans think that they have the ability to control and decide the path of their own lives. However, in philosophical insight, humans might voluntarily provide sections of their life toward the hands of luck. It can be said that the Mitch in some way dropped his mission in life—not principally since he has not been seen his philosophical ideal for sixteen long years—apparently when he continue to ask himself “what happened to me?” on the date he visited Morrie for the very first time after university. It's normal for individuals to feel lost irrespective of the time disparities thus understanding with Mitch is simple.

    While talking about life and mortality with Morrie, Mitch grasped something. He understood that he had “traded lots of dream for a bigger paycheck.” This is certainly true for the reason that Mitch originally dreamed about being a musician. Mitch made more cash than he would have ever believed. He purchased vehicles and a home in the mountain and has invested in bonds.

    In short, Mitch became financially productive, however is that what's really important? Can the things which signify wealth get a person fulfilled and satisfied? The world had plotted for Morrie and Mitch to meet up once more to answer these queries. Though, appraising Mitch for his interest to money and fortune appears to be duplicitous. Centering exclusively on his lineage and capabilities, Mitch’s mindset was altered when he got reunited with Morrie.

    Mitch devoted so countless hours caring about someone else's life which meant zero towards him directly. He envied Morrie for discovering meaning on small things. He continued by saying that human beings are hooked on another person's tragedy. Every Tuesday, he looked forward to his visits with Morrie as he felt the same way as “cleansing rinse of human kindness.” 

    Simply such as how Mitch relates to with Morrie, the reader of this memoir also empathizes with the protagonists and thus, readers have been able to look from a view in which they never imagined occurred. Without meeting his professor Morrie in the last pages of his journey on Earth, would Mitch Albom realize what's truly important in life? Would it be possible to have the opportunity to modify the life standpoint of millions of readers all over the globe in the same way as how Morrie altered his? 

     It is extremely dubious. Empathy was not only applicable to Mitch but also to the readers of their last thesis. The tale of Morrie Schwartz with Mitch Albom’s book “Tuesdays with Morrie” is constantly moving the public's perception of life and constantly help individuals admire the significant things of life regardless the age disparities. Genuinely, “aging is not just decay, it is growth.”

A Beauty from Within

     “Be proud of who you are.”, these words voiced by one of the most respected celebrity influencers in the world, Bretman Rock Sacayanan. A Filipino who settled to America and went on to become a “digital celebrity” based in Honolulu, Hawaii. Unlike any other stars, Bretman decided to stay away from city life and be with nature by living at the bottom of the mountains of Hawaii. 

      Periodically, he hikes upon the mountain's climbing ground, yet surging down in the sunny rays, a feeling of peace as his foot meets the earthy path, documented through his phone and shared with his followers. By greater than 16 million followers on Instagram, the 22-year-old digital celebrity has seized the Internet by typhoon. As a part of the LGBTQIA+ community, Bretman shows how colorful life can be with nature, family, and friends.

      Being raised by a single mother must be tough but being raised right is all that matters. As stated by Bretman Rock, “Put your family first”, being able to talk freely concerning his family, comprising his dad's nonappearance following their parents' divorce. The closeness of his family was shown with their appearances in his videos and photographs. Furthermore, he also helps babysit his adorable nephews and nieces whenever his family were out.

     Not only he has a good heart for family, but he also cares about nature. From the day of his fame until today, he constantly reminds and shows his followers to “Stop using plastic straws. Save the turtles”. Bretman is a huge advocate for the putting an end to the usage of plastic straws because it only harms the ocean animals such as turtles. The animals were suffering the consequences of human beings’ action. To imagine nature destroyed is to leave the soul without breath.

     No such thing identifies Bretman Rock's character fairly so much like his self-confidence. As said by Bretman Rock, “Be proud of who you are.” Frequently, he drives to beach after the sun has risen to devour his meal and enjoy the solitude with a satisfying view of yellow sand and deep blue sea. Additionally, this Pride month, one of the faces for Nike Be True campaign is Bretman.  In order to showcase that "Strength has no gender! It's measured from within," Being out of the closet is not his dilemma but being an ambassador of this campaign definitely helps to cut the stigma.

     Describing Bretman Rock is not a trivial job. For the reason that he has too many titles from being an advocate to a makeup artist, comedian, or performer. Nevertheless, the least we know that he isn’t just “digital celebrity” by name. The use of his fame to protect and motivate his followers, family, community, and nature. With over thousands of social media influencers around the globe, Bretman Rock is certainly a good one.
