Hot Take: the reason why 'Lower Decks' (and 'The Orville') "feel more like Star Trek" than do 'Discovery' or 'Picard' is because the baseline for American drama series has gotten so dark over the last twenty years that a tone matching 90s Star Trek can now only be achieved by marketing it as a comedy.
And yes, when you think about it, that's...kind of sad.

For many years I've loved the idea of a show giving viewers a domestic episode. Or an episode where the characters live their "normal" lives. However, I've also wondered whether that would actually be fun in execution or if it'd fall flat & feel boring.
I've especially liked the concept for high action shows or shows where characters are frequently in dangerous situations.
Turns out - it's absolutely fantastic. Not only do I like domestic episodes, but I will happily watch an hour and twenty minutes of it with sheer delight.
I'm so thrilled that The Orville took such a big creative risk. It was so, so good and I hope other shows can learn from it.

This episode is passing the bechdel test solely because women are talking about the societal and technological advancement through socialism and it’s giving me whiplash

Please I beg of you. Go watch The Orville. I had my doubts about it when I was told to watch it. But they go HARD. My feelings are a too invested in these characters for the show to be canceled after 3 seasons.

any chance of a gif of "You have been useful, sober man. You may go now"
I'd say a great chance, since it was the first one I started making right after finishing the episode. :D
