Deca-Dence was a fun ride, and the finale stuck the landing. Probably could have used one or two more episodes to flesh out the world and side characters a bit more, but I heartily recommend it regardless.

Missing you I headcanon that she put that photo on her wall too. This happens during the time Kaburagi was missing being in prison and all.

Specifically on the enforcement of gender roles -- I went to Catholic school my whole life and when I was in 4th grade, I was in a class of about 25 kids, give or take. This was the only 4th grade class in the entire school--there was only one grade per class. I had been with these kids since second grade and would end up being with them until I moved away before starting 8th. I was never able to make friends with the girls in my class, if for no other reason than I just genuinely enjoyed the activities the boys would do during recess. Kickball, baseball, tag. Active things. The girls in my class just hung around and talked, which is totally fine, but I was a little ball of energy back then! And to be completely honest, they just weren’t nice to me. I was the token weird teased kid.
One day in 4th grade I was playing with a few of my guy friends. I don’t remember the details of the game, but it was a take on tag with a home base. We were running all around the playground until the principal, a nun named Sister Mary Lou, came out and said “Kathryn. Go play with girls right now.”
I was stunned. 9 year old me could not compute. I’d been playing with the guys since 2nd grade and it had never been a problem. Sister Mary Lou had been the principal since before I started at the school and had never called me out like that, and definitely not in front of nearly the entire school in the middle of the playground. I started crying and went to one of the corners were some girls were, but they weren’t interested in hanging out with me, so I just sat there and cried until recess was over.
And, for the record, we weren’t being destructive or loud or violent. It was just tag. We weren’t shouting rude things or yelling excessively, or running over anyone. The guys I was playing with weren’t called out, just me.
For what it’s worth, my mom was furious. When I told her about what happened after school that day she went right inside and told Sister Mary Lou that if she had a problem with who I played with, she was to call her first and under no circumstances was she to yell at me in front of everyone ever again. Not only because it was ridiculous to bar a girl from playing tag with some guys, but also because, frankly, the girls weren’t that nice to me. Mom assured me I could play with whoever I wanted and no one at that school ever talked to me about who I played with with or how I played again. But I’ll never forget that. I have no idea what made Sister Mary Lou come out and yell at me like that. It just kinda sucks because I was and still am a very sensitive person and I didn’t have a lot of friends back then, so getting yelled at for doing absolutely nothing wrong threw me for a loop.
In the end, the way my parents reacted was key. I can’t imagine how I would have felt if they had either done nothing about it or sided with the principal. My mom was definitely not a Karen when it came to my schooling, so when she went to bat for me it really meant something. It truly showed me that A, I was not doing anything wrong and B, I had an example of what standing up for myself looked like. In fact, despite some of the trauma I experienced throughout my school years (primary, middle, and even high school), I truly believe that the way my parents helped me and went to bat for me in certain situations helped me to not internalize the trauma. A parent having their kid’s back makes all the difference in situations like this!
Hey guys, I'm writing an essay on the negative effects that primary/elementary school can have on young children. Things like the invalidation of feelings; common trauma responses and the reinforcement of gender roles.
If anyone had any personal experiences they'd be willing to share it would be greatly appreciated.
I need a variety of examples to get my point across about the issue. (Please DM me/reblog this post with stories).

Please watch deca-dence! Yes, episode 2 might turn you off (OR NOT), but for me it’s been a GREAT experience so far, I rarely experience such strong emotions. But anyway, watch it for yourselves and find out. As for me, I’m just drawing the obligatory hugs here.
