[id: five gifs from the 19th episode of the series "The Untamed," each with a white border around them. In the first, Jiang Cheng approaches Sword Hall at Lotus Pier in the middle of his dream, the sky vibrant and colorful, full of oranges and blues. In the second, Jiang Yanli has a haunted expression on her face as she sees the corpses outside of Qinghe. In the third, Wei Wuxian clutches his abdomen, recovering from the core transfer. In the fourth, Jiang Cheng looks over his shoulder, waking up alone after the transfer. In the last, Jiang Cheng and Lan Wanji turn simultaneously from Nie Mingjue, preparing to go to Yiling together. /end id]
wangxian au where lwj is separated from his family during their visit to yiling laozu’s solo exhibition, and is trapped alone in the haunted gallery until he meets wei ying, another boy of his age who has no memory of how and why he is also inside the gallery
yes this is a horror game ib au, everyday i still think about that game.
loosely based plotwise tho, basically is an artist haunted by memories of his past life and in his creations, painted wei ying, a self portrait that came to life (like mary) when lwj entered his world. however wei ying has no memories of why he was created
so if this had game play i guess you’d figure out all this, that wei ying is a fragment of the creator, wei wuxian, the gallery dedicated to his lost lover, who was lan zhan in a previous life. ofc, figuring out all this while running away from headless ladies
the happy ending is that you both escape and the sad endings, oh boy, the possibilities [rubs paws together]

In the end I am actually quite happy with how this turned out, and I don’t say that very often.
I began this with a few thumbnail sketches as I tried to decide what scene from this short ficlet I wanted to illustrate. I landed on the actual kiss because, that being the source of the prompt the ficlet came from, it seemed the most appropriate. Plus, who doesn’t love some tender Wangxian?
I built a quick 3D model of an interior hallway space in Shapr3D and exported some renders which I used as a base to construct the hallway. However, I ended up not liking the arrangement of that space, so I essentially rebuilt it from scratch on the fly with some simple one-point perspective construction lines. I knew I wanted Wei Wuxian to appear caught in a pool of light, but partly shielded from it by Lan Wangji as he kisses away his tears. Everything else was built around that.
I also wanted some element in the frame that suggested the source of Wei Wuxian’s grief in the ficlet which could double as a foreground compositional element. Originally, I had planned to include some dried lotus seed pods in a vase in the extreme foreground (remember how Lan Wangji brings the long-stemmed lotus pods back and puts them in a vase of some sort in the entry way of Gentian House in one of the novel extras? I imagined something similar here). But ultimately, I felt it detracted from the figures, so in the end I settled on the less obtrusive rabbits on the left (it’s a rabbit funeral that incites this moment, after all).
Other than some image reference for the rabbits and screenshots from the show of Lan Wangji’s headpiece, I managed to do this piece without any visual, anatomical, or likeness references. Yay for pulling things out of my head!
If there’s any interest in purchasing prints, I may upload this to INPRNT.
