the master chief is a savior figure that all soldiers in his orbit look to, and for all that he is but a taciturn saint of warfare, seemingly unaffected by the endless scenes of despair. also theres a woman who comes w him as a package deal w the driest sense of humor and shes his favorite.

this is why in confluence theres a couple mannerism/turn of phrases that the weapon uses that are from cortana, from chief

on a serious note i think this is the best route for the weapon - it dismisses the sort of awkward tension (fans keep joking she’s chief’s “new girlfriend” which i find gross) and keeps cortana relevant in a positive way without outright defining what her relationship was w chief.

god i wish 343i had stuck to making the weapon more childlike. the parallels with the chief’s identity as a child soldier, the naivety against what we as the audience know about the ring, it would have been so good. also the mother-daughter dynamics of it all. chief is a widower taking care of his former partner’s daughter and she looks just like her, enough to make it hurt when she smiles. on the plus side kids love blowing shit up and they bond over that early on

it’s one of the more obvious hints in confluence (mostly bc anyone whos read contact harvest would Get it) but i still liked getting to explain the pilot’s flying skills as an advanced autopilot assistant in the pelican, one that has just a little bit or cortana trapped in it after she got silent auditorium’ed. the shard isn’t really self-aware or recoverable, but still intact enough to realize john is on-board. this isnt to dismiss the pilot or anything, its just he’s an engineer and theres a couple maneuvers he pulls off that don’t seem feasible for him to do alone. however, w the aid of a somewhat-sentient shard of cortana, who is very, Very familiar w chief’s affinity for jumping out of moving ships, it becomes a lot more likely LOL
