Quick theory here:

Fairies have use of the Mesmer right? A hypnotic vocal spell that puts humans (and other creatures) under. Although eye-to-eye contact makes it far stronger, it does have some affect with just the voice...

What if this is how the human sailors’ tales of beautiful sea creatures that lured you to your death with their songs came about? Because they were actually sirens, another of the fairy families. Perhaps they were wiped out centuries ago like the unicorns?
