I've been thinking about Oscar and all the religious stuff lately because of the topics I want to cover in my fic, and here's a bunch of thoughts.

We've got to encounter religion a lot (except in TWB maybe), both christianity and shamanism (the Youkols' spiritual cult), and it seems to play a huge role in Hans' and Kate's journeys. Religion seems to be important for Anna Voralberg as well.

Look,

Hans befriending the Youkols,

Oscar's mysterious soul auxiliary,

Oscar's face resembling the mask of the spirit of death,

Ayawaska's genuine interest in Oscar in Syb 3 (jokes aside)

— those things make me think a lot about Oscar's nature.

I had a theory that his presence in Kate's life is somehow... unlucky and damaging for her, although it might appear the opposite. She can't let him go, and hence they're both doomed. Look at one of Nick Cantin's letters to Olivia (the further part of the letter is a bit off point, but this one is still relevant to what I'm saying):

Moreover, someone always has to die every time Oscar gets created/resurrected:

Anna Voralberg in Syb 1,

Captain Obo in Syb 3,

Katyusha (and Kate's mother) in Syb TWB.

Btw, all of them seem to reflect in his character in the corresponding part of the game.

Oscar not knowing the concept of death makes a lot of sense actually. Usually, children acquire this knowledge through the loss of their close friends (including animals) or relatives, but Oscar had to experience some kind of death himself, and he seemed to not question the Youkol ceremonies afterwards and was involved alongside Kate. He might have had his own visions during the Red Moon ceremony — the game does not imply this, but what kind of visions might they be? Could they be about Hans and Anna? The train? Valadilène?..

Overall, I accept the fact that the games do not expect us to consider Oscar's mind fully human, and my ramblings are a bit excessive, yes — but my headcanons treat him as human or almost human, because it makes everything 10x more interesting (for me).

Syberia: The World Before Theory

So the game dropped a few days ago and I’m already setting up a board with red strings for my crazy theories, but hear me out.

The drawing of Dana was done while she was visiting Baranour Park.

At the bottom right of the drawing there’s a big circle like object which looks vaguely like the Ferris Wheel at the Baranour theme park.

The mountain top in the background could also indicate Valsembor and it’s surrounding area. It appears quite often, in promotional art, the painting in Dana’s house and here in the drawing.

Also the thing she’s leaning against looks a bit like the back end of the Krystal. There’s a slight curve and then it goes straight.

Considering Obo used to take passangers to and from Valsembor and Baranour and no other ship was mentioned anywhere in Valsembor. Even wanting to use the Krystal when the reactor accident happened, I feel like I could safely say that it’s the Krystal in the drawing.

Going by the timeline there might be a chance to see Hans again working at the theme park and maybe one of the many Oscar-bots in action. Who knows?
